Necmettin Erbakan who was handed
an ultimatum by the powerful
National Security Council MGK)
to toe the line on secularism, on
Monday refuted the military's
right to impose legislation, saying
that right belongs to the government.
But the leftist opposition leaders
Erbakan visited in a publicized bid
to defuse the heightened tensions,
refused to provide the sought support,
calling him to resign if he
still had qualms about secularism.
In his confrontation with the
military, the leader of the Welfare
Party (RP) will apparently has also
to guard his rear. For as Erbakan
sought a way out of the terms the
MGK wants him to sign, Defense
Minister Turhan Taran, a senior
politician of the jumor coalition
partner True Path Party (DYP),
