GAP already helping to boost economy<br />
in Southeast<br />
The $32 billion project, which will<br />

spent up until now on the<br />
Southeastern Anatolia Project<br />
(GAP), the "biggest project in the<br />
history of the Turkish Republic," to<br />
use Presi<strong>de</strong>nt Süleyman Oem.irel's<br />
words, the Anatolia news agency<br />
reported. The $32 billion project,<br />
which will be compl<strong>et</strong>ed ln 2010,<br />
comprises of 22 dams for irriçation,<br />
19 of which have hydroelectnc power<br />
plants, producing when compl<strong>et</strong>ed<br />
over 27 billion KWH of energy.<br />

farm 20 million fish a year, and<br />

The two irri!!ation tunnels of the<br />
project, each of which is 26.4 kilom<strong>et</strong>erS long, are<br />
the longest in the world, and will provi<strong>de</strong> water to<br />
1.7 million hectares of agriculturalland. The n<strong>et</strong>work<br />
of irrigation has also led to an increase in the<br />
price of land. At present, an acre of land is sold for<br />
approximately $2,000, in a place where no one was<br />
willing to buy land three years ago.<br />
The 63 kinds of agricultural and animal produce<br />
,of the region will be exported to 55 countries, pri-<br />
• marily European and the Middle East<br />
countries, through the international airport to be<br />
built in ~anhurfa.<br />
The project will also be influential on agriculture-based<br />
industrial activities in the region. Fortyfour<br />
