GAP already helping to boost economy
in Southeast

• A total of $ 12.5 billion has been
spent up until now on the
Southeastern Anatolia Project
(GAP), the "biggest project in the
history of the Turkish Republic," to
use President Süleyman Oem.irel's
words, the Anatolia news agency
reported. The $32 billion project,
which will be completed ln 2010,
comprises of 22 dams for irriçation,
19 of which have hydroelectnc power
plants, producing when completed
over 27 billion KWH of energy.

be used for fish farming. Gülabi
, Polat, regional director of the State
Waterworks Authority (DSt), said
" that the, darn had the capacity to
farm 20 million fish a year, and
that residents, whose land was
expropriated during the construction
of the darn, would gain income
from fishing.
The two irri!!ation tunnels of the
project, each of which is 26.4 kilometerS long, are
the longest in the world, and will provide water to
1.7 million hectares of agriculturalland. The network
of irrigation has also led to an increase in the
price of land. At present, an acre of land is sold for
approximately $2,000, in a place where no one was
willing to buy land three years ago.
The 63 kinds of agricultural and animal produce
,of the region will be exported to 55 countries, pri-
• marily European and the Middle East
countries, through the international airport to be
built in ~anhurfa.
The project will also be influential on agriculture-based
industrial activities in the region. Fortyfour
factories in Sanhurfa have already started pro-
