Killing

BERLIN (AP) -- A German court convicted four men Thursday
in the 1992 assassination of Iranian opposition figures in Berlin,
concluding that Iran's top leaders ordered the killings.

The ruling shook German-Iranian relations: Within hours, each
country withdrew its ambassador and expelled four of the
other's diplomats. Germany warned its citizens not to travel to
Iran, for security reasons.
European Union officials meeting in the Netherlands"invited"
other member countries to recall their ambassadors and said
they were breaking off their two-track policy of doing business
with Iran while discussing issues'of terrorism and human rights.
The cour~ convicted two men of murder and two of being
accessoriesto murder in the Sept. 17, 1992, killing ofIranian
Kurdish leader Sadiq Sarafkindi and three colleagues in the
Mykonos restaurant in Berlin.
Presiding Judge Frithjof Kubsch said the men acted on orders
from Tehran. "The Iranian politicalleadership is responsible,"
.he said, adding that its goal was to eliminate political dissidents.
The Foreign Ministry said the verdict indicated "a flagrant
breach of internationallaw" by Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mahmoud Mohammadi
denied that Iran's leadership was behind the killings and said
Tehran was recalling its ambassador to Bonn for consultations,
Iranian television reported.
Some 300 riot police with water cannons surrounded the
German Embassy in Tehran late Thursday to prevent any
anti-German demonstrations. Most of the police were
