• The crisis caused by the
Welfare Parly's (RP) reluclancc
to implement the anti-fundamentalist
measures adopted at
the Feb. 28 meeting of the
National Security Council
(MGK) is continuing.
Deputy Prime Minister and
Forei~n Minister Tansu Çiller
on Friday visited Chief of
General Staff Gen. lsmail
Hakkl KaradaYI and later
plunged into talks with Prime
Minister Necmettin Erbakan,
while Industry Minister Yahm
Erez (DYP) issued an open
challenge saying the DYP wanted
implementation of the decisions
of the MGK.
"The MGK decisions will be
implemented without any
chanfl.e as long as the DYP
rema\1\S a partner in this government,
even at the risk of
hrin~ing the govcrnment to an

Opposition Republi~ People's
Party (CHP) leader De~ Baykal
called for an early election. A
spokesman for the main opposition
Motherland Party (ANAP) said the government
would "go" because of the public
wave of reaction against it. DSP
leader Ecevit urged all parties, other than
the RP, to come together for a "solution
government" before it was too late, that
is before the country is faced with a
s~rious "regime crisis." He told a press
conference the senior partner of the
coalition was deliberately escalating the
tension, and an alternative to the present
government should be found before
developments turned into a serious
regime crisis.
Stressing that the junior partner of the
coalition, the DYP, hel~ the key to the
formation of an alternative government,
Ecevit said: "If the DYP executives and
deputies act with determination, the door
which (DYP leader Tansu) Çiller keeps
closed for the time being, can be opened.
They can thus contribute ~ffec~vely ~o
the country's leaving be~d this regune
crisis." He stressed that if the DYP .
deputies fail to achieve that, they will be
domg great harm nol only to their own
party but also to the country. Noting that
the RP wing of the coalition obviously
does not intend .to ~p~ement the MGK
