Turkish Daily News p1URSDA Y, MARCH 20, 1997
[ETIER TO THE EDITOR
able eVIdence that children and juveniles
have been tortured in police stations. My
,indignation has led me to write a letter to
the Officer in Charge at Çmarh Police
Torture 0 f
~o~~~n. The textofmy letteris as foljuveniles
, Despite the fact that the Turkish
Government ratified the United ,
Na~0l!s Convention on the Rights of the
Child 10 May 1995, and that torture is
forbidden in Turkish law, there is reli-
''DearSir, '"
.' I have been informed that Thrahim
Okkah was arrested on Nov; 27, 1995
arid taken to Ç10arh Police Station: At
the time he was 12 years old and suspected
of stealing. When his father
fetched him in the evei1ÏIig he was cov-
,ered in bruises and bis arm was seriously
injured. He was adinitted to hospital
where he Was put into intensive care for
three days. I hereby ask that a full
enquiry be made to ascertain who tortured
this juvenile and that the guilty
police personnel be charged." ,
I do not believe the public in Turkey
is unaware of what happens to both children
and juveniles, as well ~ adults, in
police stations. It would be interesting to
know whether the general opinion of the
people is in favour of legal proceedings
against police personnel in cases such as
the one mentioned in the above letter
