The GNA story about the ‘71 year-old farmer remanded for defiling
13-year-old girl’ illustrates yet another side to these rape cases. The 71
year old man raped a 13 year old, this rapist’s friend’s grandchild. It did
not seem to matter that the 71 year old already had a 16 year old girl
friend who used to send the 13 year old to the 71 year old man to collect
money for her. These visits were the 13 year old child’s undoing.
The old man took advantage of the visits and had sexual intercourse
with the 13 year old on several occasions. His luck eventually ran out.
take place in the home and domestic settings, then let it be known
that the school environment is far from safe. The report of the Plan
Ghana, a Children’s rights NGO produced a recent report that shows
the high prevalence of sexual abuse in some Ghanaian schools. Their
latest survey shows that about 14 per cent of female students have been
abused by their classmates, teachers and relatives. In the Awutu Senya,
Effutu and Upper Manya Krobo Districts, which lie close to Accra,
about 10 percent of male students have also been abused sexually.
Advocacy and Research Adviser for Plan Ghana NGO, is reported to
have disclosed the following to Joy News.
It came out clearly that the major perpetrators of child sex abuse are their
own classmates (i.e. 98) and female friends constitute 58 percent, male
friends constitute 37 percent, neighbours 36 percent, teachers, 21 percent
