The selection of respondents was at random, done with the assistance
of a community member who served as a key informant. No two respondents
were selected from the same household. The discussion of
sexual experiences came after respondent had suggested Ga terms for
reproductive health and body issues. Respondents were not asked point
blank if they had been raped or assaulted violently, rather the issue was
allowed to surface spontaneously. 1 But once the discussion got to the
subject of sexual violence the opportunity was seized to probe the issue
further to establish the context and background and the aftermath.
In line with anthropological insights it is realised that what people say
they do may deviate from actual behaviour or from what is perceived to
be the societal ideal i.e. what the people say they ought to do, as we
learn from Beattie (1966). This is bound to be so, where sensitive subjects
like intimate reproductive experiences are concerned. This means
that the reliance on focus group discussions, and other interview techniques
alone, where informants talk about their past experiences and
