MONDIALE DU PARFUM
Entre mer et montagne, la Cité offre lentement son charme et incite à la
flânerie dans le lacis des ruelles étroites et pittoresques de son centre
historique. Capitale mondiale de la parfumerie, Grasse est un lieu
privilégié de villégiature alliant beauté du site et intérêts culturels.
Cité médiévale, héritière d’une longue tradition commerçante et
industrielle, Grasse est aussi soucieuse de la mise en valeur de ses
richesses architecturales. Le centre historique présente une belle qualité
architecturale à la fois provençale et génoise. Il fait actuellement l’objet
d’une politique active de réhabilitation.
Au milieu du XI e siècle un habitat fortifié est implanté sur la colline du
Puy. En 1244, l’évêché d’Antibes est transféré à Grasse. L’artisanat de la
tannerie fait la renommée de la Cité.
Au XVIII e siècle la bourgeoisie commerçante est prospère, la parfumerie
connaît un véritable essor. Au XIX e siècle, les cultures florales et la
fabrication des parfums donnent à Grasse une renommée internationale.
La ville devient aussi un lieu de villégiature recherché en raison de la
spécificité de son climat. Les nombreux hameaux de Magagnosc,
Plascassier, Le Plan sont aussi à découvrir.
Aujourd’hui, Grasse a su conserver une place très particulière au “balcon
de la Côte d’Azur”. Elle demeure une cité industrielle de premier plan,
grâce à la parfumerie et à d’autres industries annexes. Le nouveau Musée
International de la Parfumerie, ouvert en 2008, est le témoin historique,
patrimonial et culturel de cette industrie. La qualité des actions de
valorisation du patrimoine a valu à Grasse le label “Ville d’art et
d’histoire”.

city centre. As the world capital
of perfume, Grasse combines
beautiful surroundings and cultural
interest, making it an exceptional
place to spend a holiday.
A medieval city and heir to
a long tradition of trade and
industry, Grasse pays particular
attention to the development
of its architectural wealth. The
historical centre features buildings
of beautiful architectural quality
influenced by both Provence and
Genoa. It is currently the focus of
an active restoration policy.
In the middle of the eleventh
century, a fortified residence
was built on the Colline du Puy.
In 1244, the Diocese of Antibes
was transferred to Grasse. Skilled
tanners established the city’s
reputation.
The eighteenth century saw the
rise of a prosperous merchant class,
and the perfume industry, which
had taken the place of tanning,
flourished. By the nineteenth
century, the cultivation of flowers
and the manufacture of perfumes
had brought international renown
to Grasse. The city also became
a favoured holiday destination
because of its pleasant climate. A
number of hamlets and the areas
of Magagnosc, Plascassier and Le
Plan are other interesting parts of
the city.
Today, Grasse occupies a special
place as the “Balcony of the French
Riviera.” It continues to be a firstrate
industrial city for perfume
production and related industries.
The new International Perfume
Museum, which opened in 2008,
provides a historical, patrimonial
and cultural overview of this
industry. Grasse has been certified
as a “City of Art and History” for
the outstanding quality of actions
promoting the local cultural
heritage.
