La température et les concentrations en sulfures et en nitrites sont mesurées au niveau de différents organismes situés près du diffuseur (petites moules, gr<strong>and</strong>es moules, crevettes) ainsi que directement dans le fluide émis par le diffuseur. La synthèse de matière organique par des producteurs primaires nécessite une source d’énergie (couple oxydo-réducteur) et une source de carbone inorganique. A la surface, l’énergie nécessaire à la fixation du carbone inorganique provient en général de la photolyse de l’eau (photosynthèse). Au niveau des sources hydrothermales, elle provient de l’oxydation de composés réduits présents dans le fluide par des bactéries (chimiosynthèse). Les composés réduits peuvent être le sulfure de dihydrogène H 2 S, le méthane CH 4 , le dihydrogène H 2 , l’ammonium NH + 4 ou le fer Fe(II). Les équations-bilans suivantes permettent de comparer les deux processus : Photosynthèse : Chimiosynthèse (exemple) : H 2 O+NADP + + ADP+P i hν −→ 1 2 O 2 + NADPH + H + + AT P HS − + 2O 2 + ADP+P i → SO 2− 4 + H + + AT P Dans le cas de la photosynthèse, l’énergie provient du rayonnement lumineux ; dans le cas de la chimiosynthèse, elle provient de la différence de potentiel d’oxydo-réduction entre le donneur et l’accepteur d’électrons qui rend l’échange d’électrons possible. L’énergie produite permet la fixation de carbone inorganique dans des molécules organiques. La source de carbone inorganique est le CO 2 atmosphérique dans le cas de la photosynhtèse et le CO 2 ou le CH 4 contenus dans le fluide dans le cas de la chimiosynthèse hydrothermale (on utilise l’appellation "carbone inorganique" pour désigner le carbone du méthane par abus de langage, pour l’opposer au carbone incorporé dans des sucres).
