I. Présentation
Allemagne), Hanno Vogl-Fernheim (Innsbruck / Autriche), Galli & Rudolf (Zurich / Suisse),
Graham Phillips (Denham, Royaume-Uni), RCR (Olot / Espagne), Sauerbruch Hutton (Berlin
Bauhaus-Museum : The Kunstsammlungen in Weimar (1996), étude chronologique de l’art et
In ”Bauhaus twenty-21” photographer Gordon Watkinson compares the current state of a
selection of iconic buildings, typical of the Bauhaus, with recent buildings of a similar
typology. In his images he captures the impressive creative quality of the structures designed
prior to 1933 by Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Hannes Meyer, Georg Muche,
and Richard Paulick, contrasting them with outstanding buildings constructed in Europe after
2000 by Allmann Sattler Wappner, Rolf Disch, Hanno Vogl-Fernheim, Galli & Rudolf,
Ingvartsen, Graham Phillips, RCR, Sauerbruch Hutton, Werner Sobek, and Gert Wingårdh.
In his images Watkinson often selects an orthogonal perspective, set at a right angle, parallel
to the walls. In their abstract clarity the results recall drawn elevations or sectional views,
somehow resembling the translations from design to reality that we know from renderings. By
My aim for the project was to offer a contemporary perspective on the original ideas and
architectural language developed by the Bauhaus masters and students between 1919 and
1933, exploring the evolution of their ideas and influence not only on our everyday life in the
early 21st century, but hopefully as a basis for dealing with the pressing issues that we have
to solve both now and in the future.
The idea of function as a priority, the distancing from conventions, the shedding of irrelevant
and an emphasis on transparency were guiding principles in both Gropius’ Masters’ Houses
Gropius’ modernism from its ideological associations and made minimalism the common
architecture.
The Bauhaus movement arose in a time when society was rapidly transforming. They took
up the challenge of new building tasks, responded to new social structures, developed new
approaches to the design process, and redefined the role of the designer. People and their
needs, functional processes, transparency, cost-effectiveness, fitness of purpose, the
orchestration of light, and formal reduction are parameters that informed the design of
buildings then as they do now.
The fascination with the spatial and design revolution brought about by the Bauhaus is as
alive as ever. The single-mindedness with which furniture was stripped of all arbitrary design
Graham Phillips
It has never ceased to amaze me that such progressive work was produced in the 1920s and
1930s by Mies and others at the Bauhaus, but that all those years later the quality of
architecture seems to have progressed so little.
the original ideas of the Bauhaus.
MICHAEL SIEBENBRODT IN CONVERSATION WITH GORDON WATKINSON
Essentially, the Bauhaus was a program aiming to organize life by realizing the full potential
of architecture. It was by no means architecture as l’art pour l’art. I know all these star
architects and most of their buildings, these gigantic sculptures without a real function. Their
architectural field really is the field of fine art; their objective is not the transformation of “real
life”. However, these spectacular architectural sculptures will fade from the spotlight, as their
capacity to astound diminishes.
MICHAEL SIEBENBRODT IN CONVERSATION WITH GORDON WATKINSON
The future of architecture lies in the evolution of Bauhaus ideas in relation to today’s
problems – such as affordable housing, which is and remains the main architectural issue of
the 21st century. The focus of Bauhaus architecture has always been on finding solutions to
the fundamental problems of humans in their respective times. This is exactly why it is
paramount for today’s architects, in collaboration with contemporary thinkers, philosophers,
and artists, to bring about answers to the problems our societies are currently facing. 3.1
million people dying from AIDS every year, is a catastrophe comparable to a world war. This
is one of the real problems we urgently need to resolve. But Bauhaus ideas never were the
sole expression of a particular profession – architecture – they always implied working
towards a new form of society. The key question still remains: how do we take up where they
left off to build this kind of society today?
MICHAEL SIEBENBRODT IN CONVERSATION WITH GORDON WATKINSON
construction.
Sauerbruch Hutton
The Bauhaus generation’s desire for an aesthetic and high-quality but industrially produced
architecture has only really become possible in the light of today’s progressive
advancements in technology. It is only now, in the age of computerized mass-customization,
that Gropius’ aim to “eliminate the disadvantages of the machine without sacrificing any of its
true advantages” seems truly achievable.
How will we live in the future?
The Bauhaus answered this question with the House am Horn in Weimar. With a compact
floor plan and an unconventional arrangement of rooms around a central space, the house
was intended to demonstrate a new way of living for the middle class in which appliances
and other technology took over the household duties once carried out by servants.
The House of the Present in Munich was likewise built as a demonstration model and
attempts to answer the question anew, putting forward new ideas for ways of living and for
organizing the home. Individual private rooms are arranged around a central core in which
communal life takes place. The house is equipped throughout with advanced household
appliances and communication technology.
Cet
Work environments of aesthetic perfection
Gropius conceived of the furnishings and fittings for his Director’s office at the Bauhaus in
Weimar as a holistic design. As suitable products were not available, he designed all fittings
and furnishings himself. The carpet, seating, office furniture, pendent light — in short, the
complete interior — correspond to the functional design principles developed at the Bauhaus.
The law office for Hengeler Mueller in Düsseldorf also follows a holistic design approach.
From the overall spatial concept to the nameplate on the door, the architects worked together
with the client to design a work environment in a classic modernist idiom. The striking
impression of the formal reduction of the design lies in its disciplined order and arrangement
Constructed architectural manifestos
The auratic Bauhaus Building stands like an architectural beacon, an iconic building whose
epoch-defining aesthetics marked the beginning of a powerful architectural movement.
Symbolizing a new relationship between architecture and technology, planning culture and
social responsibility, Walter Gropius showed architects the way forward into a new age.
The Federal Environmental Agency is likewise an exemplary project, illustrating a new
The Bauhaus aesthetic becomes Bauhaus style
Walter Gropius’ concept for the Masters’ Houses in Dessau represents a prototypical vision
for a two-story villa in the architectural language and formal expression of modernism. The
rectilinear volumes of the buildings are arranged to create outdoor areas, terraces, and
entrance areas around them. the direct indoor-outdoor relationship of the houses embeds
them harmoniously in their natural surroundings.
The Villa Roser in Skara employs a similar strategy adapted to the specific characteristics of
the locality. The architectural language is that of classical modernism. Large terraces at
ground level and on the upper story create an intense relationship with the landscape, which
is underlined by the spare use of a few, natural building materials.
Buildings shaped by their purpose
Walter Gropius’ design for the Employment office in Dessau represents a building whose
form very clearly follows its functional arrangement. The floor plans are derived from a
precise analysis of the functional processes within the building, and the design, access, and
lighting from the function of the spaces.
The Employment office in Reutte serves the same basic purpose and provides spaces for
values in society, however, has resulted in an altogether different concept, in which clients
Hannes Meyer’s Balcony Access Houses in Dessau-Törten represented a new type of
Civilized living with a panoramic view
The Villa Tugendhat is Mies van der Rohe’s expression of an exclusive, formally avant-
view over the city masterful. State-of-the-art domestic equipment helped the inhabitants lead
The experimental House R128, with its open, four-story-high living room and lack of
enclosing walls, similarly eschews conventional ways of living. The full-height glass on all
sides creates an impression of living in the midst of nature. Specially developed electronic
installations and management systems make use of solar energy to achieve a near-zero
