Harpe Chromatique
January, a month in suspense…
One year comes to a close and another begins. With hearts still vibrating from the
echoes of the past, we must strain our ears to those of the future, nourish ourselves
with memories and believe in future promises. This is how we know we are alive.
Alive? The harp? You can decide for yourselves as you look through these pages. While the fabulous voice of
the chromatic harp rises from the past, electro-acoustics open an incredible universe of sound. Jean-Michel
Damase passes a generous heritage to the younger generation. The Blue harp writes its Odyssey. The Louise
Charpentier Competition, which is now the Competition of the “Cite des Arts de Paris”, honours Maï Fukui; the
3 rd “Lille Competition” is upon us, and new competitions are being created in Nice and Caernarfon. In Arles, the
barriers are coming down and all talents are celebrated.
Proudly anchored in its past, gallantly turned towards the future, at the same time accepting
tradition and evolution, the harp is well and truly alive. Nourished by ancient
talents, it generates vocations, it attracts new talents, it inspires the greatest composers,
and it arouses the passion of the public. Through it, the spirit of Arles came to life!
It is with great optimism that I wish you all a very happy new year! The promises are
there, ready to be concretised: now it’s your turn to play!
11 èmes JOURNEES DE LA HARPE EN ARLES
Ensemble Ilios :
Jacques Bonvallet, Michel Perrin, Mylène Sarazin,
This year again, the town of Arles was
transformed into an immense musical stage for
the Eleventh Harp Days. Arles generously opened
its magnificent architectural heritage to harp
lovers who flocked to discover a programme that
had been passionately concocted by Claude Pages
and Sylviane Lange. Opening is the perfect word
for this festival as its greatest success lies in
bringing down barriers. This festival reunites the
greatest international interpreters, budding
talents, and the most humble beginners. It attracts
young musicians, teachers, parents and curious onlookers. It receives support from
officials, harp-makers, publishers, music editors and local shopkeepers. Therefore the
Arles Harp Days are more than a simple festival, they are also
a “spirit”. The spirit of Arles is the simple communion of a
great diversity of present and future talents; it is the alliance
of the pleasure of playing and the demand for quality.
This is an attractive and successful alchemy within which
Jakez Francois, director of Camac Harps, feels particularly
comfortable. It is in celebration of this “spirit” that he
wanted a new piece to be written which pays homage to this
communion of artists by reuniting Celtic and pedal harps on
stage within the hands of young pupils of varying technical
standards. This project began in Arles itself at the last
festival, during a passionate discussion between Jakez
Francois and the composer Arne Werkmann who were both
Marie-Amélie Fauchier-Magnan, Eponine Momenceau,
Arne Werkmann, Anna Dall’Ara Majek, Jakez François
filled with enthusiasm by the effervescence and diversity of
the Tenth Harp Days. Translating the “magic” of Arles into
music was such a joyous perspective for Arne Werkmann that he adopted Jakez’
project and instantly accepted the commission. He finished writing the piece in May
2005. It is a very luminous ensemble in four movements for two pedal harps and four
Celtic harps in which Arne Werkmann set out to integrate several levels of technical
difficulty, to make each instrument sound, and to balance the ranges of the
instrument so that each harpist could invest fully in their part. Jakez Francois
confided the parts to Anne Ricquebourg and her pupils, who worked with great rigour
and motivation to give this piece its first performance during the opening ceremony of
the Eleventh Harp Days. This “Arlesienne” work -conceived in Arles, dedicated to
Arles, and given its first performance in Arles - opened the Eleventh Harp Days in the
magnificent vault of the “Salle des Pas Perdus” in the Town Hall. It was given in the
presence of a group of officials which included Mr Schiavetti, the Mayor of Arles, Mr
Marguerite Deleuze, Saori Kikuchi, Jean-Michel Damase
On Sunday the 16 th October 2005, the Espace Camac was full for an exceptional
concert - a chromatic harp recital by Francette Bartholomee. The chromatic harp
is a fabulous and unusual instrument. Harpists rarely have the opportunity of
approaching and listening to this instrument, and a long time ago, Jakez Francois
was one of the lucky few to be given this opportunity. Since then, he dreamt of
giving as many people as possible an encounter with the chromatic harp by
organising a performance of the “Danse Sacree et danse Profane” by Debussy on
the instrument for which they were composed. It was no surprise that such a
concert would arouse so much curiosity and attract such a large audience.
Gustave Lyon invented the chromatic harp
in 1897 in order to remove the difficulties
that arose with works composed in minor
keys with variable degrees. This instrument
allows the passing from one key to another
without modifying the tuning by means of a
mechanism. The seventy-eight strings are
disposed in the order of the strings of a
piano, crossed as with the double harp from
the seventeenth century, and differentiated
by their black and white colouring as with
the keyboard. This harp was wrongly
considered as a rival to the diatonic harp,
and it aroused lively opposition and was
only constructed over a short period of time
of thirty years at the very beginning of the
twentieth century. “In fact”, explained
ELEVENTH HARP DAYS IN ARLES, FRANCE
Gaëlle Vandernoot
The 2005 season of masterclasses at the Espace
Camac came to a close under the best possible
auspices, those of Jean-Michel Damase.
Throughout the day, this great master of the
harp helped even the most timid pupils to relax
on stage thanks to his great kindness and his
contagious good humour. There were
numerous pupils, amongst them Anne-Marie
Liss, Marta Power, Cecile Monsinjon, Camille
Denoy, Marie Gueraud and Delphine Latil. In
turn, they interpreted pieces by Parish-Alvars,
Tournier, Faure, Roussel and J.S.Bach, thus
giving Jean-Michel Damase the opportunity of
sharing his immense knowledge and
inestimable experience with the audience.
Some pupils were eager to present works by
Fabre, the Deputy Prefect, M rs Van Luisen, the Regional Councillor, Mrs Claude Pages
and Mrs Sylviane Lange from the “Association Opera”, and Mrs Marie-Claire Jamet,
guest of honour of the Eleventh Harp Days. Thus the “Four pieces for Harp Sextet”
opus 49 admirably echoed the “spirit” of Arles!
The emotion of this opening ceremony continued throughout the four day festival,
and each performance was packed with enthusiastic and passionate audiences.
Marie-Claire Jamet was celebrating the fiftieth year of her career, as well as fifty years
of marriage to Christian Larde: what a magnificent journey, the success of a lifetime
of love, complicity and talent, all given as a gift to a profoundly moved audience.
Catriona McKay held St Julien’s Church spellbound with her Celtic harp, distilling
emotion, poetry and energy, and marvellously reflecting the spirit of these Harp Days.
With simplicity and professionalism, the joy of participating and sharing, she didn’t
hesitate to play in the middle of the “Place de la Republique” just for pleasure. With a
touch of poetry and a dash of melancholy, all sprinkled with
an occasionally mordant humour, Christine Merienne
conquered the audience at the Arles Theatre with her voice
and her Celtic harp. International prize-winners Gaelle
Vandernoot, Nabila Chajai and Emmanuel Ceysson all
brilliantly confirmed their youthful talent by dazzling their
enthusiastic audience. Mara Galassi and her baroque triple
harp aroused great curiosity from an audience which was
intrigued and amazed by such technicality and lightness.
Janet Harbison joyfully took us to the heart of Ireland in a
colourful performance punctuated with violin, whistle and
bagpipes. As for Buffo, the magical clown, if he made us
Nahalie Chatelain
laugh with his array of instruments - cello, violin and baby
cello - his brush, his dustbins and his rubber chicken, he
above all aroused a whole world of emotions buried deep inside us.
Congratulations to the entire team of Association Opera who take their work
remarkably seriously without
taking themselves seriously! Long
MASTERCLASS WITH JEAN-MICHEL DAMASE
Sunday 16 th October 2005
Irish Harp Orchestra
Jean-Michel Damase himself: Marguerite Deleuze and Saori Kikuchi played the first
and second movements from the Sonatina for two harps, whilst Sarah Verrue
interpreted the Tango. Jean-Michel Damase emotionally recalled the conditions in
which he wrote this Tango, which was commissioned by Mrs. Edwige Motte as the test
piece for the last “Martine Geliot Competition”. He said it was an “amusement”
composed in honour of Martine Geliot’s happy, cheerful personality! Therefore there
should be no soppiness in the interpretation of this piece - it is a Tango and one should
not hesitate to play the chords straight and “a bit ugly on purpose!” “It is a joke, but
not an easy joke!” Once the programme was completed, Jean-Michel Damase turned
towards the audience and appealed to any volunteers. Miss. Constance Luzzati and
Miss. Maï Fukui were unhesitant and were followed on stage by Isabelle Moretti, a
“young pupil” who showed great promise. She questioned Jean-Michel Damase at
length on a piece written for his mother, Mrs Kahn, by Gabriel Faure, “Une Chatelaine
en sa Tour”. For those who are still wondering, the C-flat is that of the author and it
should not be corrected to C-natural! This was a lovely day and a superb lesson about
enjoyment of life and the pleasure of playing.
“CARTE BLANCHE” TO THE CHROMATIC HARP
Francette Bartholomee, “these two harps would rather be complementary. Each
has its characteristics, its qualities, its sonority, its ranges of resonances, and its
expressivity”. Numerous composers understood this and wrote very beautiful pieces
for the chromatic harp: Debussy, Koechlin, Enesco, Casella, Fevrier, Jongen, and
Pousseur, amongst others. Francette Bartholomee chose to present some of these
pieces during this magnificent concert: “Chromatic Fantasy BWV 903” by J.S.Bach,
“Intermezzo” by Henry Fevrier, “Three Nocturnes” by Pierre Bartholomee,
“Fantasy-Caprice” by Luigi-Maurizio Tedeschi and finally, the “Danse Sacree et
danse Profane” by Claude Debussy, in which she was accompanied by the Ilios
Ensemble in the adaptation for string quintet
by Fabrice Pierre. The audience was
captivated by Francette Bartholomee’s twirling
fingers whilst they were taken on an
unforgettable journey characterised by
unusual rhythms and sonorities. This was a
journey which can seldom be made. Francette
Bartholomee is worried. “The harp that you
have heard is probably a hundred years old, it
has travelled far, and it is worn and fragile. It
has its moods and its unwanted noises. I
hardly dare play it…” And she starts to dream
that maybe one day a harp maker will once
again rekindle the flame, so that the voice of
the chromatic harp can live on.
CONCERT D’INAUGURATION EN
MOLDAVIE
Johann Joachim Quantz
OPENING
CONCERT IN
MOLDAVIA
The Organ Hall, the
greatest and most
beautiful Concert Hall
in Chisinau, Moldavia,
was alive with
rumours and hushed
conversations on the
evening of the 16 th September.
The crowd hastened
and the number of spectators was already
much greater than the 500 seats available. Pupils
from the music schools rubbed shoulders with
members of the Government, and Diplomats tried
to make their way through the throng of experienced
music lovers desperately searching for a
seat. This concert truly was an exceptional event:
it was the opening of the season, a concert given
under the initiative of the French and German
Embassies of Moldavia, and an evening during
which two foreign soloists were going to perform
four pieces, three of which had never been played
before in Moldavia. The broad media, television
and radio coverage placed the emphasis upon
another exceptional event: the arrival of a new
harp donated to the Porumbescu Music School by
the French harpmaker Jakez Francois. Chisinau
is unaccustomed to so many new things!!!!
The National Chamber Orchestra was on stage,
and after her acknowledgements, the Director of
the Organ Hall quickly handed over to M rs Buinowski,
Director of the Porumbescu Music School.
She expressed her gratitude to M r François in a
very moving manner for his magnificent gesture.
CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL
J’ai travaillé avec M me Masayo Matsuo,
M me Atsuko Yoshino et M me Susan McDonald. J’étudie
aujourd’hui avec M mes Isabelle Moretti, Germaine Lorenzini
Isabelle Moretti, Constance Luzzati, Ina
Helga Storck, Chantal Matthieu, Lyne Aspnes, Ieuan Jo
Harpes Camac. C’est une occasion en or et j’en suis très
reconnaissante.

INTERNATIONAL HARP
COMPETITION OF THE
“CITE DES ARTS”, PARIS
A second breath
From the 25 th to the 27 th November 2005, the “Cite Internationale
des Arts de Paris”, opened its doors to
its first International Harp Competition since
the Louise Charpentier Competition became
obsolete. This competition was completely
rethought and reorganised under the energetic
impetus of Mrs Brunau, the President
of the “Cite des Arts de Paris”, who breathed
a new dynamism into it. Under the Artistic
Direction of Jean-Michel Damase and Isabelle
Moretti, and with the logistical support
of the entire team at Camac Harps, who
were in turn supported by the team at the
“Cite des Arts de Paris”, the first International
Harp Competition of the “Cite des Arts
de Paris” proceeded smoothly thanks to the
nes, Jean-Michel Damase
This competition was created in memory of the harpist,
composer and tireless musician, Louise Charpentier, who
travelled throughout France in order to gain appreciation
of her instrument. The competition revealed young harpists
who are now famous, amongst them Xavier de Maistre and
Marie-Pierre Langlamet. Since its foundation, the tests have
always taken place at the “Cite des Arts de Paris”, under the
benevolent presidency of M rs Simone F. Brunau, and I was
responsible for the Musical Direction for the past ten years.
Objectively speaking, we had ascertained that the standard
during the past years was no longer that of its creation,
I am now 19 years old and
have been learning the
harp for nearly 12 years. I
have studied with M s .
Masayo Matsuo, M s . Atsuko
Yoshino, and M s . Susann
Helga Storck, Maï Fukui
McDonald. I am now studying
with M rs . Isabelle
Moretti, M s Germaine Lorenzini and M s . Geneviève Létang at
the « Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris ».
When I was 7 years old, my father's work brought our family to
Gothenburg in Sweden. I was admitted to the English School of
Gothenburg where I got acquainted with the daughter of Ms.
Masayo Matsuo, a Japanese harpist with the Gothenburg Symphony
Orchestra. When I visited her home, I encountered the
harp for the first time in my life. I was most impressed with the
elegant form of the harp and I asked M s . Matsuo if I could learn
to play the harp with her. Her kind acceptance on the spot was
the very beginning of my association with harp. At the World
Harp Congress in Prague in 1999, I had the opportunity to
listen to leading harpists from around the world and I realized
that there were so many different ways to express music with
the harp. At a later date, performing at a Christian style
funeral, I realized that my music was gently wrapping the
atmosphere which was filled with sorrow, and healing the
hearts of those who were present. I was so pleased that I could
contribute so much, and I loved the harp more than before. I
decided to enter the International Harp Competition of the « Cité
faultless efforts of all concerned. It attracted such a great
number of competitors that a shortlist of candidates by
written registration was made in order to limit the number
to twenty contestants. The international dimension of the
competition was guaranteed with contestants from the four
corners of the world - Korea, Russia, France, United States,
Moldavia, Switzerland, Japan, Lithuania and Italy - who
enriched the competition with very different sensibilities. As
soon as they arrived, all these young candidates were able
to practice within a warm, studious atmosphere, and
benefit from the best possible conditions for preparing a
competition. A wide choice of harps was put at their
disposal by Camac and Salvi, each candidate was allocated
a personal practice room, there were several long
rehearsal sessions, and the organisers were attentive to all
their needs. The eliminatory rounds took place in the superb
auditorium of the “Cite des Arts de Paris” where numerous
spectators had come to hear and support the candidates.
With Jean-Michel Damase as President, the jury comprised
of great names of the harp world: Lynne Aspnes from the
United States, Ieuan Jones from the United Kingdom,
Chantal Matthieu from France and Switzerland, and Helga
Storck from Germany. Deciding between the candidates
was not an easy task. The richness and diversity of the programmes
presented enabled the jury to select eight
candidates to take part in the final round, which was of a
remarkable technical and artistic standard. Miss Maï
Fukui of Japan won First Prize, (Louise Charpentier Prize),
Miss Ina Zdorovetchi of Moldavia was awarded Second
Prize, (Camac Harps Prize), and Miss Constance Luzzati of
France won Third Prize, (“Cite des Arts de Paris” Prize)
and the Special Savarez Prize for the best performance of
the contemporary piece. Congratulations to these young
women who brilliantly inaugurated this first “vintage” of
the International Harp Competition of the “Cite des Arts de
Paris”. This particularly successful year bodes well for the
future of this competition which should become a major
event in the harpist’s agenda. The organizing committee
was meticulous and showed professionalism that left
nothing to chance, the teams worked in faultless harmony,
the vast premises were particularly suitable for welcoming
such an event, and the candidates were of a high standard.
All these conditions are conducive to ensuring that the
International Harp Competition of the “Cite des Arts de
Paris”, will become a harp event to be reckoned with.
A COMPETITION RISES FROM THE ASHES
with fewer candidates and more seductive new competitions,
and the Louise Charpentier prize was no longer
awarded and was regrettably put on ice. Thanks to the precious
collaboration of Isabelle Moretti with the artistic
direction, and the significant material support of Camac
Harps, the 2005 session marked a total renaissance as
much with the number of participants as with the quality of
the participants. No doubt that the Louise Charpentier
International Competition of the “Cite des Arts de Paris” has
taken off and will reveal new talents in two years’ time.
des Arts de Paris » about one year ago when I started studying
with Mrs. Moretti at the Conservatoire. I understand that this
competition has a well-established history in France under the
name of Louise Charpentier and that the said competition has
been re-named as « Concours International de Harpe de la Cité
des Arts de Paris ». I certainly pay my respects to this competition
and I feel most honoured that I was given the first prize on such
a commemorative occasion. I equally studied the music
required for the first and final stage, from Bach through to
contemporary music. With regard to specific rendition of music
from different ages, I tried to enhance my imagination with
what I learned from M rs . Moretti, M s Lorenzini and M s . Létang. It
is usually said that a competition has its own stringent atmosphere.
This particular competition, however, did not give me
the impression of a harsh atmosphere. On the contrary, I felt a
kind of warm feeling around me. I could therefore play in a
relaxed manner and I am grateful for such an atmosphere
created by the jury, the organisers, other candidates as well as
the audience. I really didn’t expect to receive this prize. I
honestly wanted to know how much I could express my music
on this occasion and I was interested to know how the jury
would judge my performance. I am extremely happy with the
result. I look forward to playing with utmost care and pleasure
during the recital tour organized throughout Europe by Camac
Harps. I am truly thankful for such a golden opportunity.
France and a gift from the heavens”, she said. The
French Ambassador, M r Edmond Pamboukjian, and
the “charge d’affaires” at the German Embassy, M rs
Regina Lochner, then specified that this concert was
given with the support of Franco-German funding,
and that, on this evening, the harp, flute and
orchestra represented the voice of friendship between
France, Germany and Moldavia.
It was an exceptional concert. Under the leadership
of Didier Talpain, who has directed the National
Chamber Orchestra of Moldavia on several occasions,
Stefanie Faust, flautist with the Nuremberg
Orchestra, and the harpist Isabelle Courret, all
contributed in making this a memorable evening.
Johann Joachim Quantz’ Concerto for Flute in
G Major, Francois Adrien Boieldieu’s Concerto for
Harp in C Major and Claude Debussy’s “Danse
Sacree et Danse Profane” for Harp and Strings were
works which had never been played before in Chisinau.
The Concerto for Flute and Harp by Mozart
concluded this marvellous evening. The audience has
rarely given such a warm welcome. After more than
ten minutes’ applause, the final movement of the
Mozart Concerto was played as an encore.
A group of spectators commented: “What delights us
in particular is that the harp will stay in Moldavia
and that we may hear more concerts like this.” This is
also the wish of the Cultural Service of the French
Embassy in Moldavia, which took advantage of this
opportunity to reiterate to Camac Harps and to Mr
Francois in particular, its gratitude for this gift made
to a country in which music holds an essential place
in cultural life and in which there is a wealth of
young talent.
Gwenael Kerleo a interprété
A Celtic harp concert is a big occasion
for Yekaterinburg. There have been
many unusual events in the capital of
the Urals, but the concert given by the
French harpist Gwenael Kerleo at the Municipal
Puppet Theatre on the 22 nd December 2005, was the
first of its kind. This concert was supported by the
French Embassy in Russia, the Yekaterinburg Municipality,
the Ministry of Culture of the Ural Region, as
well as by the “Alliance Francaise” of Yekaterinburg.
Gwenael Kerleo interpreted various works taken from
her albums and more particularly from her album
“Gelen”. The French harpist was given a warm welcome
by an audience comprising chiefly of students
from the harp class of the Ural Conservatory, and
amateurs of French culture. In Yekaterinburg, and
at the Regional Conservatory, there is a strong tradition
of classical harp which is why a Celtic harp
concert aroused such vivid interest among professionals.
Yekaterinburg was lucky to be the first Russian
town to organise a Celtic harp concert of this kind
which was given on a French-made harp from the
workshops of Camac Harps. After Yekaterinburg,
Gwenael Kerleo went to Perm where she was to play
a second concert on the 23 rd December 2005.
SINGAPOUR
“L” BY ALEXANDRE LEVY:
AN OPERA AT THE HEART OF THE HARP!
The chamber opera “L, memory regained”
by Alexandre Levy is a lyric melodrama for
one voice, invisible choirs, amplified harp
and electroacoustic harp. Commissioned
by the French State and the Town Council
of Laon with the support of the Chateaubriand
Foundation, it will receive its first
performance on 3 rd February 2006 at the
M.A.L Grand Theatre in Laon. The libretto
is by Yves Nilly on an original idea by
Alexandre Lévy Jean-Louis Esclapes and Alexandre Levy.
During an armed conflict at an unspecified
time and place, a young woman who is a simple liaison
agent becomes lost in a hostile place. Cut off from the world,
with no means of communicating with the past, she loses her
reasons for making war. The voices of men and children question
her conscience. She opens correspondence that is destined
for the soldiers she believes to be dead. Through these letters she
reads of her life before the war. She cuts these pages up, letter
by letter, word by word, and reconstitutes a letter for herself,
the testament of her regained memory.
This work has the acoustic harp, the amplified harp and a
female voice as its basis, and is the fruit of three years of
research, creation and composition. Alexandre Levy tracked
down, amplified and recorded a multitude of sounds emitted
uniquely from a harp by pinching, scratching, rubbing, sliding
and knocking, and combined them in a bank of sounds
so that he could work on them at leisure. He decomposed, dissected,
stretched, twisted and mixed these sounds, he changed
the spectrum and took away the attack, and he squeezed,
accelerated and distended the tremolos. By modifying the listening
angle of very concrete sounds, he gave life to a new and
fascinating universe of sound by composing a completely original
work in which the harp screeches, blows and sings,
opening onto an imaginary world and reaching a new
dimension. Alexandre Levy’s music combines acoustic harp
parts, amplified harp parts, acousmonium parts, recorded
parts and vocal parts. Played and sung on stage and rebroadcast
by an orchestra of loud-speakers placed all around the
hall, it determines the listener and includes them entirely.
Plunged into the heart of sound, into the heart of the harp and
into the heart of song, it is projected into the heart of the character,
her history and her memories.
Alexandre Levy chose to
enrich his tremendous
work of creation and
composition by giving it
another more pedagogic
dimension. Resident at
the Conservatoires of
Bussy Saint-Georges
and of Laon, he wanted
to share his musical
experience with young
pupils in the harp
classes. During the
school year of 2004-
Sylvia Kévorkian
2005, he offered them
THE HARP ODYSSEY
workshops centred on the focal points of his own work axes:
experimentation, listening, recording, transforming and
creation. His aim was to open them to a contemporary
world of sound by leading them to explore and discover their
instrument through amplified harps. Amplification, which
allows one to hear all the small unwanted noises, helps
modify the ear and the perception of the instrument. The
speed and ease of the pupils’ reactions particularly surprised
Alexandre and Séverine Levy: they quickly felt free to move
around their harp, to take hold of it, to lay it on the floor, to
rub it, to hit the strings, to play with bows, keys, bags, marbles…
They quickly felt free to evolve and to play within the
sound space created by the loud-speakers of the acousmonium.
Two pedagogic pieces were conceived from this work
of creation and research realised by the pupils. “Chrysalis”
and “Double Play” composed by Alexandre Levy were interpreted
by the pupils at the open days at the end of the year.
