EDUCATION NEWS
New programs implemented in Math and Science and Technology

This is the first year for the implementation of new programs in the secondary
one cycle Math and Science and Technology. These new programs mark a shift
from an objective-based curriculum to a competency-based curriculum. The
theory underlying their construction is based on integrating realistic applications
into math, and technology into science. The results are that students must work
in hands-on ways to solve real-life problems, which promises to be engaging for
them. Because we could not adapt the southern-designed programs, we created
our own culturally-relevant materials to support the programs. We are extremely
pleased with the results, and are eager to see the students try the program and
accompanying materials.

NOUVELLES EN ÉDUCATION
Nouveaux programmes mis en œuvre en mathématiques,
en science et en technologie

Il s’agit de la première année de la mise en œuvre des nouveaux programmes en
mathématiques, en science et en technologie du premier cycle du secondaire.
Ces nouveaux programmes constituent un changement car nous passerons d’un
programme d’études basé sur les objectifs à un programme d’études basé sur les
compétences. L’objectif de ce changement est d’intégrer des applications réalistes
en mathématiques, en science et en technologie. Ainsi, les élèves effectueront
des exercices pratiques pour résoudre des problèmes de vie réels, ce qui les
incitera davantage à s’engager. Étant donné que nous ne pouvions adapter les
programmes conçus dans le sud de la province, nous avons créé du matériel
qui reflète la culture inuite afin de soutenir les programmes. Nous sommes
extrêmement heureux des résultats que nous avons obtenus, et avons hâte de
voir les élèves utiliser les programmes et le matériel qui les accompagne.
Les conseillers pédagogiques ont présenté des ateliers d’une durée de plusieurs
jours à Inukjuaq, Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kangirsuk, Kuujjuaq et Puvirnituq afin de
préparer les enseignants à donner ces nouveaux programmes emballants.

We are currently working hard to complete the rest of the material for the other levels.

BOARD NEWS
- Principals attended their first meeting of school year 2010-
2011 during the first week of August in Montreal. The highlight of the five-day
meeting was a workshop on how to deal with difficult staff given by Tony Lacroce,
former Director General of the English Montreal School Board. Information sessions
were given on the new program in math and science, special education students,
and school drop-outs. Denis Daigle, the Co-ordinator of School Operations says,
“We look forward to a year filled with collaboration, effort, and a focus on helping
students achieve success.”

– Les directeurs d’école ont assisté à leur première
réunion de l’année scolaire 2010-2011 durant la première semaine d’août à
Montréal. Le fait saillant de cette réunion de cinq jours était un atelier offrant
une formation pour aider les directeurs d’école à composer avec les employés

Montréal, donnait cet atelier. Les directeurs d’école ont suivi également des séances

Orientation, which takes place the second week of
August, is an extremely useful week for new teachers. While there are workshops
on Inuit culture, classroom management, and the pedagogical programs unique to
our Board, the culture shock workshop is a powerful learning experience no one will
ever forget. The activities are privileged information, but suffice to say, nothing is as
it seems.
Sixty-seven new teachers were hired this year. The group comprises teachers who
have retired from other school jurisdictions, as well as brand new teachers.
L’orientation qui a lieu habituellement
la deuxième semaine d’août est extrêmement utile pour initier les nouveaux
enseignants. Même si on donne des ateliers sur la culture inuite, la gestion des
classes et les programmes pédagogiques uniques de la commission scolaire, l’atelier
sur le choc culturel constitue une expérience d’apprentissage puissante que les
participants n’oublieront jamais. Les activités constituent des renseignements
privilégiés, mais les apparences sont souvent trompeuses.
On a embauché soixante-sept nouveaux enseignants cette année. Ce groupe
comprend aussi bien des enseignants d’autres commissions scolaires qui ont pris
leur retraite que des enseignants fraîchement sortis de l’université.

Ivirtivik Centre took place on June 22nd. The mission
of the centre, located in Verdun, is to deliver employment and training services to
urban Inuit to help them integrate into the labour market more easily.
The Ivirtivik Centre began offering its services in the middle of April enabling its
participants to enhance and/or obtain the basic skills, knowledge and attitudes
necessary to find long-term, gainful employment in Montreal and the surrounding
area. The centre is funded by the Kativik Regional Government, Service Canada, and
Emploi Québec. The Kativik School Board assists in the development and delivery of
the one-year pilot project.

Quebec Federation of Student Sports announced that Ikusik School won
second place in the category ‘Secondary school which contributed the most
to the development of physical activities and sports in its community’. The
prize was presented at the Federation’s gala held in Montreal in June. (Ikusik’s
hockey team, the Amaruq, won the Regional School Championship of No-Contact
Hockey in March.) The Federation also took the opportunity to congratulate the
young athletes who took part in the Arctic Winter Games. Nunavik presented the
entertainment for the Gala: Ann-Marie Aitchison and Laryssa Annahatak performed
throat-singing, and Alec Airo demonstrated the one-leg high kick. Nicolas Payette,

When teachers Adam Feather and Quinn Carter from Tukisiniarvik
School in Akulivik began brainstorming about a trip for
graduating students almost two years ago, they had no idea that
the trip would evolve into taking part in a social development
project in Kenya, and that the whole experience would foster an
appreciation for the value of education as it occurs in places of
extreme poverty.
Eight students from Secondary 2 to 5 French and English,
accompanied by two elders and two teachers, left on June 18th to
spend nine days in Kenya. To be eligible for the trip, the students
had to complete 20 hours of volunteer work in the community
and fund-raise $500 each. They were also required to quit smoking
and do well in school. The trip received funding from public and
private sponsors, and would not have been possible without the
support of ‘Free the Children’ (children helping children through
education) and ‘Me to We’ (challenging youth to live their lives as socially aware global citizens).

pourraient entreprendre les diplômés, ils ne pensaient jamais que les élèves
participeraient à un projet de développement social au Kenya, et que toute cette
expérience permettrait de valoriser l’éducation, particulièrement lorsqu’elle est acquise
dans des endroits où sévit une pauvreté extrême.
Huit élèves du secondaire 2 à 5 des secteurs anglais et français, accompagnés de deux
aînés et de leurs enseignants, ont quitté le Nunavik le 18 juin pour entreprendre un
séjour de neuf jours au Kenya. Pour être admissibles à ce voyage, les élèves devaient
effectuer 20 heures d’activités de bénévolat dans la communauté et amasser 500 $
chacun. Ils devaient également cesser de fumer et obtenir de bons résultats à l’école.
Ce voyage, qui a été financé par des commanditaires publics et privés, n’aurait pu avoir
lieu sans la participation d’Enfants Entraide (un réseau d’enfants qui s’entraident par
l’éducation) et de l’organisme « Quand moi deviens nous » (un organisme qui incite les jeunes

“They went to build a school, to learn about ecological and environmental
conservation, to share their language and stories, and to experience a part of the
world where education serves as one of the very few paths out of poverty—a path not
all children have access to.
Students carried large jugs of water 4 km on their backs, from the crocodile-infested
waters of the Mara River, to local families to use for bathing and cooking. They toured
a new health center where people can receive treatments for HIV anonymously. Inuit
and Kipsigi elders shared their oral histories - translated from Kipsigi to Swahili to
English to Inuktitut and back - and realized that hunting polar bears and lions had
striking similarities. Everyone pitched in to lay a foundation for a new school, built
walls in a new teacher’s residence, and established gardens, learning about and
planting local herbs for medicines.
In the journey from Arctic Quebec to Equatorial Kenya, 12 people saw the importance
of education in elevating children out of poverty.”

puissent s’en servir pour se laver et faire la cuisine. Ils ont visité un centre où des malades souffrant du VIH
peuvent recevoir anonymement des traitements contre cette terrible maladie. Des aînés inuits et kipsigis
ont partagé des histoires orales traduites du kipsigi au swahili, puis à l’anglais et ensuite à l’inuktitut,
et dans le sens contraire. Inuits et Kipsigis ont réalisé que la chasse aux ours polaires et aux lions avait
d’étonnantes similitudes. Tout le monde a mis la main à la pâte pour bâtir la fondation d’une nouvelle
école, construire les murs d’une nouvelle résidence d’enseignant et faire un jardin, apprenant des choses sur
des herbes médicinales locales et en en plantant.
