New formula for the newsletter
To improve the process of distributing
information, PACS decided to slightly
change the newsletter formula. Since the
2012 edition the newsletter covers information
from the last calendar year. This
means that, exceptionally, in some parts
of the current issue, the newsletter repeats
the information published in the previous
one. In those cases only basic information
is provided.
Towards Critical Multiculturalism /
Vers un multiculturalisme critique
The publication Towards Critical Multiculturalism:
Dialogues Between / Among Canadian
Diasporas/ Vers un multiculturalisme
critique : dialogues entre les diasporas edited
by Ewelina Bujnowska, Marcin Gabryś,
Tomasz Sikora addresses the issue of
multiculturalism from a variety of critical
and transdiasporic perspectives. In
Canada multiculturalism situates itself in
the center of public debate and is one of
Canadian government’s priorities, but the
issue is increasingly relevant across countries
and continents. The book comprises
28 interdisciplinary articles divided into
several sections.
Over the past two decades or so the
idea of “multiculturalism” has become a
central, if by now somewhat worn-out,
term in Canada for self‐definition. It has
penetrated deep into many areas of Canadian
life, including political and legal
philosophy, governmental policies, institutional
operations, cultural and literary
representation, academic research, all the
way down to the life arrangements of individual
citizens and the way they relate
to other individuals, groups and commu-

nities. […] It is often the case, however,
that a concept’s moment of glory hosts
the germs of that very concept’s undoing
(or at least. its fundamental redoing). […]
When by the late 1980s/early 1990s the
idea of multiculturalism (based firmly
on identity politics) seemed to finally triumph
after a long and winding path to
practical implementation, opposing visions
were quickly gaining ground. The
1990s brought an exponentially growing
number of critiques of “liberal multiculturalism”
and by the end of the decade
the term “critical multiculturalism” entered
academic vocabulary. […] Multiculturalism
came under attack from radical
left positions for abandoning its earlier
agenda of social and economic equity and
its subsequent complicity with the neoliberal
project. More on the conservative
side of the debate, multicultural politics
was accused of promoting identitarian
separatism and the dictate of “political
correctness.” […] Undoubtedly, there are
many problems and challenges that the
politics of multiculturalism has not successfully
dealt with, such as the failures
to integrate “visible minorities.” None the
less, the editors of this volume believe
that multiculturalism has helped Canada
to avoid unrest and violent cultural conflict,
experienced recently by many European
countries. And the surveys still
demonstrate, despite theorists’ critiques,
that a majority of Canadians are reluctant
to give up the label of multiculturalism.
If critical multiculturalism is taken to
stand for the critical imperative to challenge
hegemonies and acknowledge difference
without fixing it or containing its
transformative potential; if, furthermore,
it remains dedicated to issues of social and
economic justice, then the editors of this
book consider it a still viable and even
necessary project.

The annual 2011 Association for Canada
Studies in the Netherlands conference
took place in Groningen, Netherlands,
10-13 November. The conference was
hosted by Cornelius Remie, President
Association for Canada Studies in the
Netherlands. A number of students from
Europe (Russia, Poland, Germany or
Great Britain) as well as from other countries
around the world (Canada, Brazil,
Australia) were invited to present their
research on various topics: politics, literature,
Indigenous peoples, history and
sociology. Each session was devoted to
one area of studies and included students’
presentations followed by a discussion.
Evening entertainment was provided by
students from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen
who enabled the participants to learn
about Dutch cuisine and prepared a traditional
Dutch dinner. All the participants
were given a chance of publishing their
research in the immediate future.
I was pleased to present my research on
Canadian literature entitled “Lola Lemire
Tostevin’s Concepts of ‘Femspeak’ and
‘Menspeak’ and Linguistically-determined
Silence.”
The conference was a memorable experience
and it was an honour to meet the
ambassador of Canada to the Netherlands,
James Lambert as well as Canadianists
from around the world, including
the President of Association for Canada
Studies in the Netherlands, Jeanette den
Toonder (Director, Centre for Canadian
Studies, University of Groningen), Conny
Steenman-Marcusse and the M.A. and
PhD students.

GRAINAU CONFERENCE GRANTS
Each year PACS offers one grant to those
wishing to participate in the conference
held annually (in February) by the Canadian
Studies Association of German-
Speaking Countries (GKS) in Grainau,
Germany. The successful applicant’s re-

search interests should be related to the
central topic of the conference. Preference
is given to those who have not attended
previous GKS conferences. The grant
covers the cost of participation at the conference
(registration fee, accommodation,
all meals) excluding travel expenses.

EU-CANADA STUDY TOUR AND
INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
THINKING CANADA
“Thinking Canada” is a new initiative
of the European Network for Canadian
Studies, funded generously by the European
Commission – a three-and-a-half
week study tour to Canada for European
students and is followed for selected participants
by two-month internships. It is
preceded by a couple of days of briefings
in Brussels on the EU and EU-Canada
relations. The aim of the study tour is to
offer its participants a unique in-depth
experience of Canada through an intensive
programme of visits to major private
and public institutions, government
bodies, think-tanks and NGOs. At each
place, the students receive briefings and
have the opportunity to exchange views
with representatives of these bodies,
many of them leading experts in their
fields.
In 2011 PACS offered Polish awardees
grants to cover the participation fee and
costs of travel from Poland to Brussels.

In autumn 2011 I had a great honor to
participate in the second edition of the
EU-Canada Study Tour and Internship
Programme ‘Thinking Canada 2011’.
‘Thinking Canada’ is a new initiative
of the European Network for Canadian
Studies (ENCS), funded by the European
Commission. The programme consists
of a four-week study tour to Canada for
European students, previously selected
by Canadian Studies associations in their
countries, and two-month internships for
some of them. For instance in 2011 there
were eight internships which were performed
in think tanks, in foundations, in
cultural institutions, in government departments
etc.
The main objective of the programme
is to offer its partakers a unique experience
of Canada through interesting visits
to major public and private institutions,
government bodies (federal and provincial),
think tanks and NGOs.
In 2011 the tour’s programme was focused
mainly on cultural diversity (i.e. English
and French relationship, policy of multiculturalism,
First Nations), some political
issues (i.e. federalism, regionalism, Canada-EU
relations), the environment (primarily
Arctic problem), urban and economic
issues (i.e. the Comprehensive Economic
and Trade Agreement’s negotiations).

The tour began on September 4 th 2011
in Brussels where we spent a few days
having appointments with famous EU
politicians like Mrs Morag Donaldson
(Overview of the European Parliament),
Mr Ellis Mathews (The European External
Action Service), Mr Philippe Rispal
(Role, functions and monetary policy
strategy of the European Central Bank),
Mr Charles White (The EU’s Regional
Policy) and Mr Christofer Fretwell (The
European Court of Justice), along with
some representatives of various NGOs,
namely Mrs Patsy Sorensen, the founder
of PAYOKE, an organization that combats
the trading in and exploiting of
human people (human trafficking). We
visited also the Canadian Mission to the
EU.
After spending few days in Brussels the
whole group flew to Ottawa, which was
our first stop on a different continent.
In Canada’s capital city we had a pleasure
to see the EU Delegation to Canada
and the Office of the Commissioner of
Official Languages who tried to explain
us what bilingualism really is. We extremely
enjoyed a visit at the Nunavut
Sivuniksavut College as young Inuit presented
their life and history in a very interesting
way, along with the Museum of
Civilization and the Canadian War Museum.
More formal, though still absorbing,
were meetings at the Department of
Foreign Affairs and International Trade,
Health Canada, Canadian Conference of
the Arts, Assembly of First Nations or
Canadian Labour Congress.
From Ottawa we drove to Québec where
we had an opportunity to listen to riveting
presentations about Canada-Québec
relationships and the North Plan at the
Ministry of International Relations, as well
as about the Québec policy at the National
Assembly of Québec. We visited also Centre
de la Francophonie des Amériques and
Huron Museum in Wendake, charming
small Indian village near Québec.
Our next stop was Montréal, the most
multicultural city in the province of
Québec. In Montréal we spent some time
at the Ministry of Immigration and Cultural
Communities, Hydro Québec and
one of the most famous think tanks in
Canada, the Institute for Research on
Public Policy. Our last afternoon we spent
at PORTAGE, a Canadian non-profit organization
which helps people suffering
from substance abuse to overcome their
addictions. The meeting with young and
already addicted people who are fighting
every day with such horrible problems fell
deep in memory of all of us.
From Montréal we travelled to Toronto.
Multiple presentations of the members of
the Government of Ontario, as well as of
the City of Toronto, supported by a very
interesting visit at Artscape Wychwood
Barns, a NGO which makes space for
creativity and transforms small communities
in Toronto, made our stay there unforgettable.
We enjoyed also a nice reception
at the Consulate General of the Republic
of Poland where we had a chance to meet
people from the European Union Chamber
of Commerce in Toronto (EUCOCIT) and
the European Union National Institutes of
Culture (EUNIC).
From Ontario we flew to the West Coast,
Vancouver in British Columbia. We had

a chance to listen to absorbing lectures
at Asia Pacific Foundation, Pembina Institute,
Ecojustice and INSITE – a safe,
health-focused place where people inject
drugs and connect to health care, along
with social services. At INSITE our group
divided into two camps as we could not
agree if it is better to cure people as they
do at PORTAGE or to help them live
longer with their addiction. Fortunately
visit to Vancouver’s impressing Chinatown
saved us from further difficult discussions.
Our last stop was the most British city
in North America, Victoria, where we listened
to presentations about BC history,
politics, trade strategy and initiatives.
The last afternoon we spent at the University
of Victoria, getting to know what
the students’ life in Canada looks like.
The study tour was over on October 1st.
It was a very interesting time during
which we learnt many things about Canada,
met wonderful people and saw places
which are normally difficult to visit.
What is more, thanks to a well prepared
programme, everyone found something
useful for himself or herself.
In the period of October and November
2011, thanks to the opportunity given
me by the ‘Thinking Canada 2011’ Programme,
I had a great pleasure to take
part in two internships in Toronto: the
first one at the Consulate General of the
Republic of Poland and the second one
with EUCOCIT, EUNIC and the University
of Toronto.
In my opinion the EU-Canada Study
Tour and Internship Programme ‘Thinking
Canada’ is a great initiative which can
help the EU students to understand better
this fascinating country. As for those
who already are interested in Canada,
like I am, it really gives an opportunity
to meet valuable people from various Canadian
institutions and to broaden horizons.
Seven cities, tens of places, nearly
hundred of lectures, presentations and
meetings, thousands of conversations or
vivid discussions - it is something, it really
matters.
Personally I found this programme one of
the most important experience in my life
which I can highly recommend to everyone.

The programme of the EU-Canada Study
Tour – “Thinking Canada” was so varied
that it covered an enormous number of
topics, such as the EU and EU-Canada
relations; Aboriginal people, institutions,
culture and governance; bilingualism,
multiculturalism and immigration; business,
industry and labor relations; social
issues, health and humantrafficking; human
rights and civil society; urbanism
and urban planning; and environmental
issues. Significantly, from the vantage
point of my interdisciplinary research interests,
I – within the course of the tour
– was able to attend numerous thoughtprovoking
lectures by local Canadian academics
and government officials, opening
a new window to delving into a number
of nagging me questions concerning Canada.
Namely, to name but a few, at the Nunavut
Sivuniksavut College in Ottawa,

I participated in the discussion on the
Inuit people and their culture as well as
changes they need to undergo in an effort
to preserve their values. Furthermore, at
the Assembly of First Nations, more light
was shed upon how First Nations work together
to realize their rights and responsibilities,
provide education funding on
reserves, manage resource development,
and embark upon establishing economic
relationship with China. In a similar vein,
what likewise attracted my attention was
presentation concerning Canada’s Northern
policy as well as a discussion of the
inclusion of Indigenous people and Permanent
Participant organizations in circumpolar
dialogue and activities.
Another issue that was put forward during
the study tour was Canada’s drug
policy and a dialogue to compare and
contrast Canadian and European approaches.
The series of lectures on the
topic at stake were followed by a visit at
the major drug treatment facility in Canada
located in Montreal – Portage. Interestingly,
the topic of drug addiction was
discussed further and in minute detail
in Vancouver. That is to say, numerous
approaches towards fighting drug addiction
in British Columbia were brought to
the fore by Russell Maynard and Monika
Stein at the INSITE, a legal supervised
injection site in Downtown Eastside Vancouver.
They also talked about the history
of the INSITE, the events that actually
precipitated its creation, how the
place operates on a daily basis, and who
the demographic is that attends the injection
site. Along went an introduction
to the continuum of services targeted at
healing the community struggling with
the urban issues that all low income areas
struggle with on a global scale.
Yet, most importantly, the EU-Canada
Study Tour and Internship Programme
2011 – “Thinking Canada” provided me
with a unique opportunity to further my
research into the practice of oral storytelling
in fiction as a mechanism of dealing
with hyphenated identities of Asian-Canadian
writers via having a insight into
various unpublished documents, photos,
and private records concerning the internment
period of the Japanese Canadians
and their relocation processes to internment
camps during the First and Second
World War. Importantly, they may serve
as an underlying basis of understanding
various issues conveyed in the plotlines
of their novels. I was able to conduct interviews
about hyphenated identity and
the internment period with a few people
representing the second and third generations
of Japanese and Chinese Canadians.
What also turned out to be of paramount
importance was UBC Professor Haybe
Wai’s presentation on the Chinese, Japanese,
and South Asian communities in
British Columbia followed by a walking
tour of historic Chinatown. Although
Vancouver was presented as proudly multicultural,
its past racism, once silenced
history, slow social change, and current
institutional challenges were not underscored
but addressed.
Furthermore, as an intern at the Asia Pacific
Foundation of Canada, I played an
essential part in the functioning of the
National Conversation on Asia, having
a wide-ranging role in the APF project

staff both contributing and learning in
tandem. More precisely, I was responsible
for carrying out research on the controversial
issue of Confucius Institutes and
for preparing a conversation along backgrounders
on the topic at stake. Additionally,
together with another intern Nabila
Pirani, I created and launched a conversation
on Canada’s bilateral and multilateral
trade agreements with Asia which are
under negotiation or consideration. Another
internship task worth mentioning
is that over the next few weeks, I gathered
information on the APEC and G20’s
approach to fossil fuel subsidy reduction
and phase out from a collection of essays,
reports, segments of speeches, and television
commentaries.
During this time, I was likewise requested
to help in updating the NCA
Resource page, particularly the latest opeds,
research reports, policy papers, news
articles, and videos that have Canada-
Asia content for the Education, Culture
and Communities section. Moreover, I
looked for various information on the
relationship of APF’s founding partners
with Asia. Towards the end of my tenure,
I concentrated solely on conducting
research on hypothetical conflict triggers
and scenarios in the South China Sea and
Indian Ocean and their implications for
Canada for the purpose of APF’s workshop
Strategic Implications of Conflict in
the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.
The internship at the Asia Pacific Foundation
of Canada enabled me to delve further
into Canada-Asia relations and their
benefits for Canada. What needs to be
therefore emphasized is the fact that I was
provided with an opportunity to increase
my exposure to Asia via taking part in
distinguished lectures and roundtables on
Asia-related issues, such as “Thailand’s
Flood Crisis 2011”; “Green Development
of India’s Energy Sector”; Singapore’s
New Citizenship Project”; “Japan’s Recovery
Post March 2011 Triple Disaster”
etc. What was also of great importance
was the fact that such events were frequently
featured numerous panelists and
speakers who are senior government officials,
renowned social practitioners and
researchers speaking with authority about
developments in their fields of interest
and work.
Moving further, working with people
from multicultural backgrounds, especially
of Asian descent, was an excellent
opportunity to understand their complicated
Asian Canadian identity and probe
into the rich blend of cultures, lifestyles,
religions, and aspirations within the
Asia Pacific region and British Columbia
alongside possible effects on each other’s
societies. Notably, drawing on my coworkers’
expertise in different specialties
of Canada-Asia relations helped me to
collect novel and reliable ideas related to
Canada’s links with China as well as Canadian
citizens of Chinese and Japanese
descent living in British Columbia, which
cannot be obtained via online sources.
The internship largely fuelled my interest
in free trade agreements, substantially enriching
my previous knowledge on various
trade negotiations between Canada
and EU with Canada’s trade negotiations
with Asia since there is a rising importance
of Asia in the global economy.

Doing research on possible conflict scenarios
having crucial implications for Canada,
fishing grounds, and sea lanes in the South
China Sea and Indian Ocean, I realized
the importance of this area for the global
trade and its strategic value for the claimants,
such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam, and
the Philippines. Thus, as has been already
mentioned, equipped with a solid knowledge
of South China shipping lanes and
regional tensions, with particular emphasis
on territorial disputes between China and
Vietnam, I played an essential role in the
preparation of the workshop proposal devoted
to the discussion of possible conflicts
in the South China Sea along their longterm
implications for Canada.
To sum up, during the EU-Canada
Study Tour and Internship Programme
2011 – “Thinking Canada”, with particular
emphasis placed on the internship
at the Asia Pacific Foundation of
Canada, it turned out to be a unique
chance to enrich the interdisciplinary
panorama of my research interests.
Having a wide-range role in the APF
staff and working on the National Conversation
on Asia project, I learned to
create active online conversations in social
media to inspire thought-provoking
and fruitful discussions, bringing together
established Canada-Asia experts,
Canada’s emerging leaders on Asia, and
ordinary Canadians. During data base
meetings and video conferences with
the office in Toronto taking place every
week, I was obliged to present a summary
of my activities for the National
Conversation on Asia, which substantially
enabled me to build up my selfconfidence
in my presentation skills.
Working in the multicultural background
where I could speak other languages
than English, I was able to improve
largely my command of Japanese
and Chinese. Last but not least, during
my tenure at the foundation, I – having
an access to the rich archives of the
Vancouver Public Library as well as the
Asia Pacific Foundation – was capable
of largely furthering my research on the
storytelling mechanisms and hyphenated
identity of Asian-Canadians.

(juin-juillet) en études québécoises a eu lieu
à Montréal au sein de l’Université McGill
sous la responsabilité du Programme
d’études sur le Québec.
La bourse offre un cours multidisciplinaire
qui a réuni des professeurs, chercheurs
et conférenciers renommés dans leur domaine,
de même que certaines figures emblématiques
du paysage culturel québécois.
Le but de cette bourse était une possibili-
té de découvrir l’histoire et la culture du
Québec dans la plus grande ville francophone
d’Amérique du Nord et d’effectuer
des recherches de doctorat dans les bibliothèques
universitaires comme Université
McGill, Université du Québec à Montréal
et Université de Montréal.

C’est la première fois que la nouvelle québécoise
en traduction voit le jour en Pologne.
Antologia współczesnej literatury quebeckiej
(Anthologie de la nouvelle québécoise
contemporaine), sous la rédaction de
Krzysztof Jarosz et Joanna Warmuzińska-
Rogóż, contient les traductions polonaises
de vingt-sept textes de nouvellistes québécois
parus dans les années 1965-2003.
Devant un choix difficile, les auteurs ont
décidé de présenter des textes créés à «l’âge
d’or» de ce genre littéraire qui à présent fait
fureur au Québec, tout en étant conscients
d’une grande responsabilité découlant de
leurs choix d’une part et de l’autre, du cadre
restreint de l’anthologie. L’introduction intitulée
«Une brève histoire du Québec et de
la nouvelle québécoise» rédigée par Krzysztof
Jarosz permet aux lecteurs polonais de
mieux connaître les méandres de l’histoire
de la province ainsi que la spécificité de sa
littérature qui est toujours méconnue en Pologne.
Chaque nouvelle est précédée d’une
notice bio-bibliographique de l’auteur ce qui
facilitera sûrement la lecture.

susceptibles de rendre intelligible et
cohérent tout son parcours avant et après
exil. Ainsi les récits odysséens combinent
le thème du retour, au sens propre du mot,
avec l’explicitation diégétique de l’identité
narrative comprise comme un retour à soi.

Zuzanna Szatanik. De-Shamed. Feminist
Strategies of Transgression: The Case
of Lorna Crozier’s Poetry. Katowice:

The departure point of the present study is, at
the same time, a point of convergence of literary
discourses, mainstream feminist theories
and psychological studies focused upon the
nature of the shame affect. It is upon such a
fundament that Zuzanna Szatanik translates
the psychological theory of shame into the
language of feminism, thus building a foundation
for a gendered theory of shame. Because
shame is felt in and on the body, and, at the
same time, breaches the body’s limits, it makes
one feel both indiscernible and overexposed. A
shamed person is therefore perplexingly (un)
framed: In this book, the “I” whose identity is
thus unfixed is gendered feminine. Hence, the
underlying assumption of Szatanik’s argument
is that, like shame, the rhetorical disempowerment
of shaming discourses will manifest
itself in and on the shameless body: at home
with one’s body, the de-shamed self becomes
“riftless.” No longer politically disciplined or
coerced, no longer determined by the androcentric
language, Woman’s self loses rigid fixity
imposed by patriarchal categories: instead,
it brings a plethora of possible alternatives into
play.

Poised against language, literature has the
power of annulling and redefining categories
not only by deconstructing oppositions
upon which central metanarratives rest,
but also by its capacity of exposing the
reader to an experience which, in itself,
transgresses discourse. An act of reading,
as well as an act of writing, is an existential
act, throwing one into the liminal space
where discourses cease to function. It is
such an experience, born in the Author’s
immersion in the literary rhetoric of Canada,
that inspires this book: the theoretical
reflection concerning the fundamentals of
culture is derived from the “literary testing
ground” of Lorna Crozier’s poetry, whose
intuitive attempts to use language against
itself result in the disempowering of the
rhetoric of shame without resorting to the
use of unyieldingly rigid, institutionalised,
“intersubjectively verifiable” categories.
The book begins where Crozier has left off:
it uses her literary intuitions as a pretext to
revise existing theoretical visions of shame
in order to propose a non-essentialist theory,
which would acknowledge the value
of metaphorical, non-categorial, poetic
language as a means to both describe and
create reality.

Journée de la culture québécoise –
Université de Silésie
La dixième édition de la Journée de la culture
québécoise à l’Institut des Langues
romanes et de Traduction s’est tenue le
5 avril inaugurée par Monsieur le Professeur
Krzysztof Jarosz. Ces journées sont
devenues pour les étudiants de l’Université
de Silésie l’occasion de découvrir la culture
du Canada et de la Belle Province
en particulier. Cette année, pour attirer
l’attention du public non seulement francophone,
la journée s’est déroulée en polonais.
Premièrement, Ewelina Bujnowska
(Université de Silésie) et Ewa Figas (École
polytechnique de Silésie) ont essayé de
rendre compte de leurs premières impressions
lors du voyage au Québec (« Impresje
z podróży »). Ensuite, Ewelina Bujnowska
a aussi parlé d’une chanson interprétée
par le groupe québécois Loco Locasse et
le rappeur Samian en rappelant les circonstances
de sa création et quelques faits
historiques concernant les autochtones
du Canada et liés à la chanson (« Jak oni
śpiewają ! O pewnej quebeckiej piosence
»). La présentation suivante d’Aleksandra
Chrupała et de Karolina Kapołka a permis
aux participants de connaître la légende
des attrapeurs de rêve et en même temps
de s’entraîner à effectuer leur propre attrapeur
de rêves (« Łapacze snów w teorii
i praktyce »).
Comme lors des deux dernières éditions,
notre expect en hockey, Dawid
Dryżałowski du site polonais de la Ligue
nationale de hockey a voulu se joindre
aux enthousiastes du Canada. Cette fois,
il a choisi comme le sujet de son intervention
le gardien de but de hockey et son rôle
(« Człowiek za kratami: o bramkarzach
hokejowych słów kilka »). Katrzyna Jopa,
étudiante en 3e année du français langue
appliquée a présenté au public la vie quotidienne
au Québec en essayant de mettre en
avant les faits et de combattre les mythes
(« Życie codzienne w Quebeku : fakty
i mity »). L’étudiante a entre autres montré
les résultats de sa propre enquête menée
parmi les Québécois via Internet. Pour les
amateurs du français au Québec, Aleksandra
Chrupała a préparé un concours intitulé
« Do you speak québécois ? » pendant
lequel chaque participant a appris à parler
un peu québécois.
La projection du film d’Yves Desgagnés
« Idole instantanée » de 2005 a clôturé la
journée de la culture québécoise. Dans les
halls de l’Institut, le public a pu découvrir
les poèmes de François Turcot extraits du
recueil Cette maison n’est pas la mienne en
traduction polonaise faite par les étudiantes
du seminaire du Professeur Krzysztof
Jarosz.

: du Canada français minoritaire
vers la Pologne ».
Dans son exposé, la conférencière a entamé
une réflexion portant sur la problématique
des démarches traductives nécessitées par
le transfert d’une langue et d’une culture
minorisées et fragilisées par une histoire
perturbée vers une langue et une culture

Mme Zuchelkowska a aussi discuté les difficultés
de traduction que présentent les
pratiques discursives considérées comme
périphériques par rapport aux usages
standards d’une langue du fait qu’elles ne
reproduisent pas la norme. Pour ce faire,
ses exemples se rapportaient aux traductions
polonaises de quelques œuvres franco-canadiennes
choisies dans lesquelles il y
a un projet de « construction » identitaire
de communautés minoritaires aliénées à
partir des vestiges d’une identité qui se
désintègre au fil du temps.

Car en définitive, dans ce cadre, l’objectif
de la traduction ne consisterait-il pas à
« déplacer » l’identité francophone telle
qu’exprimée dans le texte source dans la
langue polonaise en s’assurant d’une perception
ou d’une réception qui soit la plus
fidèle possible à l’original?
Une microanalyse des stratégies de traduction
retenues par les traductrices et traducteurs
polonais a suivi en vue de sensibiliser
le public cible à la réalité d’être francophone
minoritaire au Canada.
Dans ces conditions, une question se pose
au traducteur : Comment « déplacer »
ou bien encore réactiver la construction
identitaire du texte source dans la langue
d’arrivée? En effet, l’incompatibilité tant
des ressources linguistiques que des contextes
sociolinguistiques propres aux communautés
concernées, en l’occurrence les
communautés canadiennes francophones
minoritaires et polonaise, pose un défi de
taille au traducteur polonais. Certes, en
traduisant, on tâche de « déplacer » dans la
langue d’arrivée, le plus fidèlement possible,
le contenu tant formel que sémantique,

Sosnowiec, Pologne – 25 novembre
2011 – Journée de la culture québécoise
– Université de Silésie
Afin de rendre l’automne polonais un
peu moins morose, les organisateurs des
Journées de la culture québécoise se sont
décidés à rapporter cet événement culturel
à la mi-novembre. Parmi les activités des
journées québécoises à l’Université de Silésie,
il ne pourrait manquer la présentation
de notre invité spécial, Dawid Dryżałowski,
spécialiste en hockey et rédacteur en chef
du site polonais de la Ligue nationale de
hockey. Il nous a fait une intervention passionnante
sur l’éternelle rivalité sur glace
de deux puissances mondiales, le pays de
la feuille d’érable et celui de l’étoile rouge
(« Klonowy liść i czerwona gwiazda : kilka
słów o zmaganiach dwóch największych
hokejowych potęg »). Après l’histoire
de la rivalité canado-russe, le temps est
venu de passer à l’histoire du Canada
retracée en grandes lignes par Marcin
Gabryś (Université Jagellonne). Grâce à
cet aperçu historique, les participants ont
eu l’occasion de prendre connaissance des
principaux aspects de l’histoire canadienne
(« Od Irokezów do Wayne’a Grotzky’ego :
wprowadzenie do historii Kanady »).
La communication suivante a été consacrée
aux sacres québécois (« Sacrés sacres
czyli o przekleństwa w Quebeku »).
Ewa Figas (École polytechnique de Silésie)
nous a introduit dans les méandres
des sacres québécois, des tabernacle et
hostie aux ciboire et calice. Elle a rappelé
l’histoire de l’apparition des sacres
en français du Québec et a souligné le
rôle que l’Église catholique avait joué
dans l’histoire de la province et dans
la création des gros mots d’inspiration
liturgique.
Pour satisfaire le public francophone,
les chercheurs de notre Institut ont aussi
préparé deux interventions en français :
l’une présentée par Karolina Kapołka
a porté sur les chats dans la littérature
québécoise et l’autre faite par Aleksandra
Chrupała a permis aux participants de se
familiariser avec les animaux du Nord de
l’Amérique.
Puisque le 25 novembre est la fête de la
Sainte Catherine, les étudiantes ont été
également invitées à participer au concours
du plus beau chapeau. Avant la remise
des prix, Aleksandra Chrupała a rappelé
l’origine de la fête des catherinettes et a
expliqué d’où vient la tradition de « coiffer
sainte Catherine ». Ensuite, les étudiants
ont pu mettre à l’épreuve leurs connaissances
sur le Canada et le Québec en prenant
part à un quiz (« Co wiecie o Kanadzie
i Quebeku ? »). L’équipe des professeurs a
emporté mais les étudiants de la spécialité
français-anglais langues appliquées leur
ont emboîté le pas.

The Canadian Resource Centre was established
at the Faculty of Languages in 1999
as a joint venture of Nicolaus Copernicus
University in Toruń and the Canadian
Embassy in Warsaw, with the generous
support of the International Council for
Canadian Studies in Ottawa. The Centre
performs a threefold task: teaching, scholarly
research, and promotion of Canadian
Studies (hosts guest lectures and screenings
of documentary films on Canada
which are addressed not only to the faculty
and students of the English Department
and the French Department but also to
the community of Toruń and the region).
Thanks to generous grants from the Nicolaus
Copernicus University, the Canadian
Embassy, and the Polish Association for
Canadian Studies, the Centre has been

book displays and the annual Days of

Depuis 1997, le Centre est dirigé par le
professeur Józef Kwaterko. A partir de
1994, le Centre se consacre à la recherche
et à l’enseignement de la littérature québécoise
au niveau de BA, MA et PhD. De
1994 à 2007, y ont été élaborés et soutenus
environ 25 mémoires de maîtrise et 3
travaux de licence portant sur le roman, le
théâtre et la poésie du Québec. Actuellement,
4 thèses de doctorats et 4 mémoires
de maîtrise y sont en cours de rédaction.
Certains travaux de recherche portent sur
un aspect comparé (littérature québécoise
et franco-caribéenne). Le Centre possède
un riche fonds documentaire pouvant être
consulté par étudiant(e)s et chercheur(e)

Chair of Canada is a part of the Institute
of American Studies and Polish Diaspora.
The head of Canadian Studies Centre,
Prof. Anna Reczyńska, is one of the most
prominent experts in Canadian history
and diaspora studies in the region. Today
the Institute of American Studies and
Polish Diaspora offers a wide variety of
regular and often inter-disciplinary courses
on Canadian topics. Among many courses
taught there one can find: Introduction
to Canada, Canadian History, Society of
Canada, Quebec Issues, Canadian Political
System, Canadian Higher Education System,
Canadian Film, and courses on Canadian
Suffrage Movement, Native Peoples
and literature, Contemporary Canadian

Canadian literature and culture courses
have been taught in the Department of
English of Adam Mickiewicz University
since the late 1980s, first by dr Jarosław
Sokół and since the mid-1990s by dr Agnieszka
Rzepa. Currently, the Department offers
regularly M.A. seminars and elective seminars
on contemporary Canadian literature.
L’activité du Centre de recherche sur le
Canada francophone s’inscrit dans le
courant multiculturel dominant présentement
dans l’enseignement des langues
étrangères; face à un développement dynamique
des recherches portant sur les
pays francophones, notamment dans le
domaine de la traduction littéraire, il est
d’autant plus nécessaire d’intégrer ladite
recherche au sein des projets plus

Indigenous and diasporic Canadian fiction,
poetry and life writing, Indigenous,
diasporic and intercultural drama/theatre/
performance;
Transcultural, diasporic, postcolonial/ decolonial/gender
theories and methodologies;
Canadian film and visual arts; Verbal
and visual rhetoric (interarts).
Two agreements of co-operation with
Canadian universities: Vancouver Island
University and Wilfrid Laurier University,
Waterloo, ON., have been signed and
developed (e.g. a student research trip to
Vancouver Island University – a project
entitled: “Transcultural dialogues between
Canada and Poland. Educating for ethics
of diversity” was completed in 2010). An
earlier co-operation agreement of the University
of Silesia with the University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Alberta, has been still
active.
The Institure library boast a growing collection
of Canadiana thanks to grants from
the Canadian Embassy and donations from
various Canadian publishing houses.
Canadian Studies Student Circle affiliated
with the Centre was founded in 2009.

En 2003, la Chaire d’études canadiennes a
été mise sur pied à l’Institut des Langues
Romanes et de Traduction de Université de
Silésie par le Professeur Krzysztof Jarosz.
Elle dédie ses activités en enseignement
supérieur, en recherche, en publication et
en animation à son aire de prédilection, la
littérature canadienne postmoderne.
À présent, onze chercheurs et chercheuses
francophones et anglophones y travaillent.
Une monographie portant sur l’œuvre
de Robert Lalonde et une anthologie de
nouvelles québécoises contemporaines
ont été publiés. Un doctorat sur le roman
historique postmoderne et postcolonial
au Québec a été soutenu. Une thèse
d’habilitation sur la traduction en polonais
de la littérature québécoise et trois thèses
de doctorats y sont en cours de rédaction.
Aujourd’hui, la Chaire a un objectif plus
ambitieux qui est de développer des re-

cherches interdisciplinaires en littérature
et culture canadiennes. Les travaux menés
par les chercheurs touchent les questions
plus vitales de la littérature canadienne des
dernières décennies.
Deux colloques internationaux, « La
réécriture dans la littérature québécoise »
et « De la fondation de Québec au Canada
d’aujourd’hui (1608–2008) : Rétrospectives,
parcours et défis » se sont tenus en
2006 et en 2008 à l’initiative du professeur
Jarosz. Deux volumes portant
sur les mêmes thèmes ont été publiés en
2007 et en 2009. La Chaire a également
contribué à l’organisation du 5e Congrès
de l’Association polonaise d’études québécoises
en octobre 2010 dont le fruit est le
collectif sur le multiculturalisme critique
paru récemment sous la direction de
Ewelina Bujnowska, Marcin Gabryś et Tomasz
Sikora. De nombreux chercheurs et
chercheuses des universités d’Europe et du
Canada s’y sont retrouvés.
Chaque année, des étudiants de français
peuvent participer aux cours de littérature
canadienne d’expression française, de
langue française au Canada et de civilisation
du Québec sur un fond d’histoire et
de civilisation du Canada. Des mémoires
de licence et de maîtrise, notamment sur la
traduction de la littérature québécoise sont
élaborés annuellement.
Depuis 2005, les journées québécoises
sont organisées et permettent à un grand
nombre d’étudiants de se familiariser avec
divers aspects de la culture du Québec.

Call for papers
It is with pleasure that we invite you to participate in the 6 th Congress of
Polish Canadianists, which will take place between 5 th and 7 th of April 2013
in Poznań, Poland. Congress presentations will focus on the often disturbed
or destabilized relations among linguistic, literary and cultural communities
of Canada in the context of the political and legal framework within which
they exist. We hope to draw scholars from a variety of disciplines within the
Canadian Studies and beyond who want to reflect on the emergence of
multidisciplinary links among the political, the social and the cultural within
Canada. Results of initial research into those areas carried over the last ten
years indicate that, whether one takes a socio-political, cultural or literary
perspective, it is no longer possible to ignore tensions between differing views
regarding the nature of the above mentioned links and interdependencies.
Canada, though apparently faithful to the principles of multidisciplinarity
and multiculturalism, still has to face and deal with intense conflicts that go
beyond the limits of academic discourse. How can one define or think about
relationships between cultural and linguistic communities of Canada and the
rule of law in relation to this complex interaction between dialogue and the
apparent exclusion and silencing?

The organizers invite you to consider the specificity of the three major
kinds of tensions occurring in contemporary Canadian society, i.e. negotiations-
-negations-antagonisms, from the point of view of the law, economy, politics,
sociology, culture, literature, linguistics and translation studies.
Potential proposals may include, but are not limited, to the following topics:
• jurisprudence in the context of official bilingualism and multilingual
practice; is it in the service of the humanist ideal that aims to create
a common culture? or, does it serve instead to strengthen the cultural
divisions by highlighting breakdowns of communication and broken links
between groups that constitute the multicultural context?;
• official languages of Canada and official translation;
• the impact of the official bilingualism on the policy and practice of
translation;
• the impact of the relations between cultural and linguistic communities in
Canada and the rule of law on national identity;
• the role of the English language in everyday life in comparison to its legal
status (ideological framework);
• publication laws and the dissemination of Canadian minority literatures;
• the impact of legal translation on literary themes and devices;
• promotion policy of the official languages;
• official bilingualism and the rule of law;
• legal and political developments in relation to language issues;
• language laws: federal and provincial;
• linguistic diversity and the economic integration of Canadian provinces;
• redefinition of the relations between the two official languages and minority
languages;
• the impact of the change of the legal status of a given language on the
restructuring of the linguistic and economic markets;
• the impact of provincial and regional specificity on legislation related to
cultural and linguistic issues;
• literary and critical reflection on the Canadian “pastoral ideal” and pastoral
tradition in support of/against Northrop Frye’s claims of its centrality for
the concept of Canada as “a Peaceable Kingdom”;
• idealistic impulses in Canadian social and literary tradition versus social
and cultural practice;
• links between Canadian literary markets and legal regulations/cultural
policies of the Canadian government today and in the past;
• anglophone and francophone literatures in Canada: historical and
contemporary interdependencies, dialogues, conflicts; how are these
facilitated or not by the legal framework?;
• banned and challenged books: censorship in Canada today and in the past;
• majority and minority Canadian literatures (ethnic, racial, class, gender);

Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter à contribuer au 6ème Congrès des
Canadianistes Polonais qui se déroulera les 5, 6 et 7 avril 2013. Le thème de
prédilection de ce congrès est le caractère, souvent boulversé ou déséquilibré,
des relations entre les communautés linguistiques, littéraires et culturelles
envers les structures et établissements d’envergure politique et juridique ou
envers elles-mêmes, étant donné que les études canadiennes consacrent depuis
une dizaine d’années une attention particulière à l’égard de l’émergence
pluridisciplinaire des rapports politiques, sociaux et culturels au sein de l’État
canadien. Il en résulte que la réflexion scientifique sur lesdits problèmes ne
peut plus ignorer les tensions entre les points de vue divergents en ce qui
concerne la nature de ce rapports, envisagés tout aussi bien sous l’angle
sociopolitique que linguistique ou littéraire , tensions qui revêtent les trois
formes principales: négociations – négations – antagonismes. De même, une
question se pose, à savoir: comment peut-on penser les relations entre les
communautés culturelles et linguistiques du Canada et l’application de la loi

par rapport à cette interaction complexe entre le dialogue et l’exclusion
apparente? Apparemment fidèle à la vertu de la pluridisciplinarité et du
pluriculturalisme, le Canada n’est pourtant pas étrangère à toute sorte de
conflits intenses qui dépassent même les limites du discours scientifique.
Les organisateurs vous invitent à la réflexion au sujet de la spécificité de ces
trois principales interactions relationnelles se manifestant dans la société
canadienne contemporaine, interactions revêtant différents parcours-juridiques,
économiques, politiques, littéraires, linguistiques, traductologiques, sociaux et
culturels- que nous nous proposons d’explorer durant le congrès. Ainsi, ce
congrès se propose de poursuivre la discussion à propos de la problématique
des rapports relatifs aux phénomènes socio-juridiques, ceci en prenant en compte,
entre autres, les acquis théoriques et méthodologiques que les études canadiennes
ont enregistrés au cours des vingt dernières années.
Nous invitons les chercheurs et chercheuses représentant des disciplines
différentes à soumettre des propositions de communications qui aborderont,
sans pourtant s’y limiter, les problèmes suivants :
• la jurisprudence dans des contextes de multilinguisme officiel est-elle au
service de l’idéal humaniste qui vise à créer une culture commune? Sinon,
sert-elle plutôt à renforcer les divisions culturelles en soulignant les
rencontres manquées entre les groupes sociolinguistiques qui constituent
ces contextes? ;
• langue institutionnelle au Canada par rapport à traduction officielle ;
• traduction institutionnelle de l’État canadien ;
• effets du multilinguisme officiel sur les politiques de traduction et sa
pratique ;
• effets des relations entre les communautés culturelles et linguistiques du
Canada et l’application de la loi sur l’identité nationale ;
• rapports de force dont jouit la langue anglaise au Canada dans la vie
quotidienne comparativement à son statut légal (cadre idéologique) ;
• application de la loi éditoriale et la diffusion des littératures canadiennes
minoritaires ;
• politique de promotion des langues nationales ;
• bilinguisme officiel et application de la loi ;
• jurisprudence en matière linguistique ;
• diversité linguistique vs intégration économique des provinces canadiennes ;
• actions sur les langues dans le cadre des États provinciaux ;
• redéfinition des relations entre langues dominantes et langues dominées ;
• changement de statut juridique d’une langue donnée et son impact sur la
recomposition du marché linguistique et économique ;
• aménagement(s) juridique(s) et politique(s) des questions linguistiques ;
• apport des particularités provinciales et régionales dans le domaine de la
loi;

• réflexion critique et littéraire sur l’ “idéal pastoral” canadien et la tradition
pastorale appuyant/contestant les revendications de Northrop Frye
concernant son concept du Canada centralisé perçu comme “Royaume
Paisible” ;
• penchants idéalistes au sein de la société canadienne; tradition sociale et
littéraire vs la pratique du quotidien ;
• liaisons entre les marchés littéraires canadiens et les réglementations
juridiques/politiques culturelles de l’État canadien autrefois et de nos jours ;
• littérature d’expression anglaise et française au Canada; interdépendances
historiques et contemporaines, dialogues, conflits, et leur prise en charge
politico-juridique éventuelle ;
• oeuvres interdites ou contestées; censure au Canada autrefois et de nos jours;
• majorités et minorités canadiennes (ethniques, linguistiques, sexuelles,
politiques, sociales) ;
• réactions politiques, juridiques et littéraires envers l’Autre, l’exclusion et la
stigmatisation des individus et des communautés ;
• prise en charge des études sur les enjeux de la sexualité dans le cadre
multiculturel ;
• littératures et cultures des Premières Nations au sein du Royaume Paisible.
Les résumés de communications, d’une longueur d’environ 200-300 mots,
accompagnés d’une courte notice biographique (prière de ne pas dépasser
une page), sont à envoyer aux organisatrices jusqu’au 30 novembre 2012.
