COMPTE RENDU DE CAMPAGNE A LA MER SUR UN NAVIRE Ifremer stable isotope composition of surface and vent plankton, to determine the contribution from the sea surface primary production photosynthetic pathways at the vents. Two vertical transects were carried out at surface depths (down to 200 m), six filter samples each time, and a further two deployments were carried out at depth at both 9 and 13°N (2500 - 2600 m). The particulate content of sea water within the PLASMA sample chambers were filtered and preserved in special DNA preservative (5M NaCl, 10% DMSO) for molecular analysis. Visual inspection revealed the presence of larval polychaetes and eggs/embryos in the deep samples. Samples of Alvinella and Riftia eggs were taken for comparison. Cytogenetics Metaphase preparations were made from a large number of vent species: polychaetes, bivalves, vestimentiferans. Excellent results were obtained for two species of vestimentiferan, Riftia and Oasisia as well as for many other species. The two vestimentiferans have a diploid choromosome number in the region of 24. Slides were prepared for genome sizing and in situ hybridisation. Serpulid symbiosis A new finding was the discovery that the Pacific vent serpulid Laminatubus alvini gains its nutrition via an ecto-bacterial symbiosis. Contrary to the situation in the Atlantic, serpulids at 13°N live towards the middle of the vent environment in close proximity to the Riftia covered chimney (e.g. at GENESIS). A further clue of their unusual feeding mode came from the observation that the branchial filaments were far larger and held more widely extended, in the form of a mop head!, than is usually the case for other serpulids. Measurements revealed that the plume of Laminatubus represents almost 50% of the total body length, whereas the usual proportion is more like 20%. To compensate for the much bigger crown, the peduncle at the base of the operculum is longer than usual. On microscopic examination, it was revealed that the branchial filaments supported a dense layer of (sulphideoxidising?) bacteria. It would seem therefore, that this particular species has dispensed (altogether?) with the filter feeding habit and instead feeds by bacterial Œgardening‚ in the same way that has been proposed for a vent cirripede (Southwards). To my knowledge, this is the first report of a bacterial symbiosis in this group of polychaetes. In contrast, the smaller serpulid, Protis hydrothermica?, which lives close to Laminatubus alvini, appears not to have bacterial ectosymbionts on its branchial filaments. Interestingly, Protis also appears not to have an operculum. Finally, I would like to record my thanks to Francois Lallier (chief Scientist: HOPE99) who made the HOPE cruise such a productive and enjoyable experience. HOPE 99 Page 225 RAPPORTS SCIENTIFIQUES
