• Rental of film materials
The archive’s material is accessible to all users from Slovenia and from
abroad. It may be used for study, scientific and research activity, cultural
and educational goals and for commercial purposes. Rental is carried out
in accordance with valid archival law, with regulations requiring special
application and according to the terms specified by those who had
deposited the films. The viewing and the selection are made on an
editing table. Those films which have been transferred to videotape are
viewed on a VCR. When an individual or an institution wants to rent a
film to screen it or copy it to tape, the archive signs a contract with them
stipulating conditions of use.
• Copyrights
According to the Law of authors’ rights and related rights (Official
Gazette RS 21/95) users must respect the moral and other rights
pertaining to archival films. The Slovene Film Archive keeps detailed
records of rentals. Users are obliged to pay rights for subsequent use.
• International co-operation
From the very beginning the Slovene Film Archive has collaborated with
the Jugoslovenska Kinoteka in Belgrade, as it was the only professional
institution specialising in the storage of films in the former Yugoslavia.
Since then, it has established good relations with Hrvatska kinoteka in
Zagreb, Kinoteka na Makedonija from Skopje and with the film archive
of Bosnia and Herzegovina now being established. Co-operation with the
Austrian film archives in Vienna, Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv in Koblenz,
Czech film archive in Prague and the Institute Luce in Rome together
with the Bois d’Arcy in France is remarkably successful.
• Affiliation with FIAF
The Slovene Film Archive had not been a member of the International
Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) prior to the independence of Slovenia
in 1991. Due to the decision of the Executive Committee, held in Oslo
(Norway) on May 26th, 1993, the Slovene Film Archive had become a
provisional member. Soon after the establishment of the ACE in 1996 the
Archives was among the first to join this organisation.
• Institution and status of the Employees
The Slovene Film Archive functions as an organisational unit within the
archives of the Republic of Slovenia. The archive’s activity is funded by
this budget. It also utilizes funds derived from its commercial income.
Seven staff members are employed by the Slovene Film Archive. Duties
include management, professional processing, technical processing, rental
of films and video cassettes, the stills library and technical management.
• Perspectives
The Slovene Film Archive is the main institution for the storage and
preservation of the Slovene film heritage. During the years of its activity
it has collected, and technically and professionally processed more than
90% of the Slovene film production. In the future the Slovene Film
Archive intends to acquire new subsidized Slovene film productions. In
