Installing the Software Testing your installation The EICAR Standard AntiVirus Test File is a combined effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to implement one standard by which customers can verify their anti-virus installations. 1 To test your installation, copy the following line (without line breaks) into its own file, as the first line in the file, then save the file with the name EICAR.COM: X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUSTEST- FILE!$H+H* NOTE: You must use a plain text editor to do this — not Word, Notepad or Wordpad. The file size will be 68 or 70 bytes. 2 To test the GroupShield on-access scanner, start your e-mail client software and insert the EICAR.COM file as an attachment into a new e-mail and send it to a mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange 2000 server. The on-access scanner reports finding the EICAR test file. 3 To test the GroupShield on-demand scanner, select the Log Infection And Continue Without Attempting To Disinfect action option on the On-Access property tab. Next, send a message that contains the EICAR test file to the selected mailbox, then start an on-demand scan for that mailbox. The software reports finding the EICAR test file. 4 Delete the file when you have finished testing your installation to avoid alarming unsuspecting users. Choose another option for the action that you want GroupShield on-access scanner to take when it detects a virus. NOTE: This EICAR test file is NOT A VIRUS. Using the Microsoft Windows Performance Monitors Installing the Software When using the Microsoft Performance Monitors to evaluate and monitor GroupShield, please be aware that some of the information presented by the Performance monitor may not directly correspond to the number of e-mails scanned. When an e-mail is received by Microsoft Exchange 2000, it is broken down into a number of items before being passed to GroupShield for scanning. The number of items that a single message is broken down into depends upon the type of mail message. This will typically be between one and three items for the message body and at least one item for each attachment within the e-mail. The Performance monitor displays the number of items that GroupShield scans, but this may not correspond directly to the number of e-mails checked. This also means that when you select “attachments” from the Performance monitor, the monitor will count the number of items, not just the attachments. Using Performance Monitors on clustered servers To configure Microsoft Performance Monitors with clustered servers: 1 Select Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Performance. 2 Right-click in the right-hand pane of the Performance window. Select Add Counters. 3 Select the Select counters from computer option and select the servername and virtual node from the list. 4 Select GroupShield Exchange from the Performance object list. 5 Select the counters and instance that you want to monitor. 6 Click Add.
