8 OPERATING MANUAL
1. Curing a Tulikivi fireplace
(break-in period)
After the completed installation, a Tulikivi should be
left to dry out for 3 days at a room temperature of +20
°C (the air-inlets of the fireplace and ash chamber doors
and dampers should be kept open).
The curing process takes 3-4 days. Start by filling the
firebox to a quarter (ca. 1 kg) with dry, finely split firewood,
light it and let the fireplace cool down to room
temperature after the fire is out. After this fill the firebox
no more than half full (ca. 2 kg) and let the fireplace
cool down again after the fire. Third time you can
fully load the fireplace (ca. 4 kg) and the curing process
is over.
2. Daily heating
Ash box
Prior to lighting a Tulikivi, check whether the ash box
is already full. Handle all ashes with caution and empty
the ash box only when the ashes have cooled down.
Wood ash can be recycled in an environmentally friendly
way as valuable fertilizer for gardens and plants.
Adequate draft
A
a. Open the damper (if available).
b. Open the air control lever of the fireplace door and
adjust the air control lever of the ash chamber door
to the middle (•• indicator), see chart + pictures.
c. Turn off any ceiling fan and/or other mechanical
ventilation systems.
d. Keep the grate clean at all times.
e. If your Tulikivi has been idle for a long period of
time, test the proper draft by lighting a piece of
kindling in the firebox. Close the door. If the the
flame is clear and vertical, the draft is adequate. A
warm chimney will prevent smoking and it is easily
achieved by blowing hot air in the flue through
chimney clean-out opening with a hair dryer.
Fuel
Use only dry seasoned wood. All types of wood and
wood briquettes are suitable. The recommended humi-
dity level of dry wood is 15-20 %. Bring wood inside at
least one day ahead to allow additional drying.
The wood should be split into pieces of 5-10 cm in diameter
and max. 25 cm in length. In bake ovens the firewood
can be as long as the firechamber is deep. Split
round logs!
A
Igniting
Firewood is recommended to be burned criss-cross fashion.
Put the kindling (eg. bark or paper) on the bottom
and both sides of the grate. Put the first piece of
firewood on the grate so that you can still see the kindling.
Add some small firewood pieces (0,5 – 1 kg)
alongside the grate, light them and close the door.
When the fire is properly burning add the first wood
load (max. 2,5 – 3 kg) against the grate. Never use fluid
fuels.
If the room has been cold for a long time, condensation
may form on the cold surfaces of the stone. This residual
moisture evaporates during the heating process.
Adding more wood
B
Wood is best added when half of the original wood has
already burnt down. Close the the air control lever of
the ash chamber door (|-indicator) and open the fireplace
door slowly. This will prevent fly ash and smoke to
spill into the room, if there is underpressure in the
room.
When the second wood load is burning, adjust the air
control lever of the ash chamber door to the right (•••
indicator). In normal heating wood should be added 1-
3 times 3-4 kg at a time (see chart page 5) depending
on the size of the fireplace. Max. woodload/heating is
0,8 kg wood per 100 kg of soapstone, ie. fireplace that
weighs 1000 kg requires 8 kg wood per heating .
Closing the damper (if available) C
When the last of the red coals disappear, it is time to
close the damper completely. Close the air control lever
of the ash chamber door first (|-indicator), then the air
control lever of the fireplace door and the damper after
that. Remember! Carbon monoxide is odorless, tasteles
and colorless gas. Be careful!
