— 562 — En 1935, Edward H in d l e fut nommé professeur de zoologie à l’Université de Glasgow. Toutefois la réorganisation et le développement de son département ne parvinrent pas à absorber toutes ses énergies, puisqu’il parvint à fonder la « Glasgow and W est of Scotland Zoological Society » et à la doter d’un jardin zoologique à Calderwood Estate et d’un journal Scientifique Zoo Life. La seconde guerre mondiale, vint encore augmenter ses responsabilités. En plus de ses fonctions de professeur il devint lieutenant colonel, commandant du Corps d’entraînement des officiers universitaires et commandant du 14e Bataillon des Glasgow Home guards. En 1942 il fut élu Fellow de la Royal Society et appelé à la direction scientifique de la prestigieuse Zoological Society de Londres. Son talent d’organisateur joint à une activité inlassable, furent hautement appréciés. Il devint secrétaire général de la « Britisch association for the Advancement of Science », président de la «Universities Federation for Animal W elfare», fondateur-directeur de 1’« International W ildfowl Research Bureau », président de la Section Zoologie de 1’« International Union of Biological Sciences » et enfin fondateur et président de 1’« Institute of Biology » l’association groupant les 9 000 biologistes de la Grande-Bretagne. Avec la mort du professeur Edward H in d l e , une très grande personnalité de la parasitologie et de la Médecine tropicale a disparu. Ni la renommée mondiale, ni les honneurs les plus insignes dont il fut couvert, n ’ont pu prendre en défaut son affabilité ni éclipser sa serviabilité.
