<strong>EGYPT</strong> <strong>'97</strong> t is with a welter of emotions that I write these lines of introduction to what is, after al l, the last <strong>FIFA</strong> youth tournament to be organised under my presidency . Prominent among those emotions, inevitably, are retrospect and nostalgia . The last of a series inexorably invokes memories of the first, and so my thoughts revert to China in 1985, the first Under- 16 Tournament and the huge success of that event, bigger even than many of us had anticipated . There is a feeling of pride, too, when reflecting upon this success . Since 1985, FIfA has continued to build an increasingly strong tournament, now the Under-17 World Championship, creating an event ofworld scope that has not only be<strong>com</strong>e synonymous with quality but has given the youth of the world an opportunity to express themselves and to develop as athletes, contributing also to a better understanding among peoples . Another emotion is that of gratitude : gratitude to all the countless people who have helped realise these tournaments, the latest being the Egyptian Football Association and its organising <strong>com</strong>mittee, whose devotion to youth football may serve as an abiding example to future generations . Gratitude, too, to the sponsors, and especially of course JVC, for their loyalty to the cause of teenage football . Ambition is another part of the emotional mix . Without Dr. Joáo Havelange, President of <strong>FIFA</strong> ambition, we can achieve nothing . My ambition for the Under-17 Championship is that it may continue to thrive and to prosper, further pursuing the course it has struck over the past decade and a half, attaining new goals . Finally, I must confess to a touch of sadness - even to grief, in respect for the memory of those blameless tourists who were assassinated at one of Egypt's most glorious monuments just days after a <strong>FIFA</strong> party had enjoyed the same cultural experience as part of the warmth of the Egyptian wel<strong>com</strong>e . Sadness, too, that I have witnessed my last <strong>FIFA</strong> youth championship as President . I shall dearly miss these great gatherings of the youth of the world . But I remain proud of what they have already achieved, and I rejoice in the knowledge that they will continue to thrive . PREFACE est sous le coup d'émo- C tions diverses que j'écris ces lignes d'introduction pour ce qui, finalement, est le dernier tournoi de la <strong>FIFA</strong> s'adressant aux jeunes qui aura été organisé sous ma présidence . Au premier rang de ces sentiments, inévitablement, se situent à la fois le souvenir ému et la nostalgie du passé . Le dernier tournoi d'une longue série rappelle inexorablement le tout premier, et mes pensées se tournent vers Chine 1985, premier tournoi des moins de 16 ans, et vers l'énorme succès obtenu par cette manifestation, succès qui fut bien supérieur à ce que n'avaient prévu beaucoup d'entre nous . C'est aussi un sentiment de fierté queje ressens quand je repense à ce succès . Depuis 1985, la <strong>FIFA</strong> n'a cessé de travailler à rendre toujours plus solide ce tour- noi qui porte maintenant le nom de Championnat du Monde U-17 . Ainsi fut créée une manifestation d'envergure mondiale qui n'est pas seulement devenue synonyme de qualité, mais qui a aussi su donner aux jeunes du monde entier l'occasion de s'exprimer et de se développer en tant qu'athlètes, tout en contribuant également à améliorer l'entente entre les peuples . Entre autres sentiments, j'éprouve aussi de la gratitude : la gratitude à l'égard de tous ceux, innombrables, qui ont aidé à réaliser tous ces tournois, parmi les derniers, la Fédération Egyptienne de Football et son <strong>com</strong>ité d'organisation, dont le dévouement en faveur du football des jeunes pourrait servir d'exemple aux générations futures . Gratitude également à l'égard des sponsors -au premier rang desquels figure, bien entendu, JVC - pour leur fidélité envers la cause du football des jeunes . L'ambition se mêle également aux autres émotions . Sans ambition, nous ne pouvons rien mener à bien . Concernant le Championnat du Monde U-17, mon ambition est qu'il continue à croître et à prospérer tout en maintenant le cap qui a été déterminé au cours de la décennie et demie passée, et qu'il atteigne de nouveaux objectifs . Et enfin, je dois avouer que j'éprouve quelque tristesse, et même de la douleur, en pensant à ces touristes innocents qui ont été assassinés en l'un des hauts lieux les
