Abstract<br />

The polyimide present a significant behaviour of water absorption compared to other<br />

polymers because of their imide groups, which induce in certain applications of insulation a<br />

non desirable effects. Indeed, the relative humidity can influence in a considerable way the<br />

electric properties of these materials. During this work, our interest is concerned with the<br />

study of the influence of the relative humidity on the evolution of the electric properties of<br />

polyimide film charged initially with a potential V0. This study is made through the<br />

measurement of the surface potential decay and the surface potential profile. During this<br />

work, the polyimide films are charged by corona system under a controlled atmosphere. The<br />

evolution of the surface potential decay with time showed that the electrostatic discharge in<br />

low relative humidity (80%) is more influenced by the initial level of chargement. The fall of<br />

surface potential increase significantly with the initial tension. Profiles obtained for different<br />

periods show that the flow of the deposited charges and the temporal evolution of the surface<br />

potential is controlled by the contribution of the phenomena related to the bulk of material.<br />

However, in more humid environment, the evolutions of the surface potential showed that the<br />

presence of the water vapour increases the electrostatic discharge in polyimide films and this<br />

increase was accentuated for the high level of charging. The surface potential decay was faster<br />

for films charged under high humidity (80%) than other films charged under low humidity<br />

(30%).<br />

Finally, our results were simulated with a mathematical model which shows that there is a<br />

good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results. The use of this model<br />

enabled us to determine the effect of RH on the variation of the various parameters<br />

controlling the surface potential decay such as: the capture time, the free time, the mobility<br />

and the rate of injection.<br />
