Table 2. Phytosociological relevés of the macroplots (64 m 2 ). For interpretation and coverage/abundance scale see text. Taxa are
arranged according to life-form and • within each group - alphabetically. Taxa with only r or + occurrences in one or two plots
are omitted in the list but included in the number of taxa given. d =species showing a post-tire decrease; i =species showing a
post-tire increase.
Of ail woody taxa only Teucrium microphyllum
and Asparagus aphyllus survived the flre by resprouting.
The coverage of herbs was slightly higher in the
grazed post-fire macroplots, and considerably so in the
non-grazed, than in the (grazed) pre-flre plots. In
overall (macroplot) view, there were no signiflcant
differences in numbers of herbaceous taxa before and
after the fire. AlI therophytes reappeared already in the
flrst year after flre. Geophytes and hernicryptophytes
were also not severely damaged. In fact, two species
were observed only in the post-flre vegetation: Lavatera
bryoniifolia which was common aIready in the
first year after the fire, and young rosettes of Asphodelus
ramosus which were found in the second year.
The tall intlorescence scapes of Urginea maritima
sprouted from the large bulbs on the bumed ground
instantly after the fire. Winter-tlowering geophytes
such as Scilla autumnalis and Narcissus serotinus
were seen in abundance during the flfst winter after
the fire.
grazed and non-grazed macroplots (64 m 2 ) two years after
Regeneration of phrygana shrubs
Two year old non-flowering plants of the low
shrubs Coridothymus capitatus, Calicotome vil/osa
and Sarcopoterium spinosum were fairly frequent in
the grazed macroplots in 1995 (table 3). In the nongrazed
plots, only Coridothymus capitatus regenerated
to sorne extent. The proportion of young Sarcopoterium
plants was much higher than one would expect
from the low pre-flre coverage of this species.
