AGREEMENT' FOR CO-OPERATION BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF BRAZIL CONCERNING CIVIL USES OF ATOMIC ENERGY. SIGNED AT RIO DE JANEIRO, ON 3 AUGUST 1955 Whereas the peaceful uses of atomic energy hold great promise for all mankind ; and Whereas the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the United States of Brazil desire to cooperate with each other in the development of such peaceful uses of atomic energy ; and Whereas there is well advanced the design and development of several types of research reactors (as defined in Article X of this Agreement) ; and Whereas research reactors are useful in the production of research quantities of radioisotopes, in medical therapy and in numerous other research activities and at the same time are a means of affording valuable training and experience in nuclear science and engineering useful in the development of other peaceful uses of atomic energy including civilian nuclear power; and Whereas the Government of the United States of Brazil desires to pursue a research and development program looking toward the realization of the peaceful and humanitarian uses of atomic energy and desires to obtain assistance from the Government of the United States of America and United States industry with respect to this program ; and Whereas the Government of the United States of America, represented by the United States Atomic Energy Commission (hereinafter referred to as the "Commission"), desires to assist the Government of the United States of Brazil in such a program; The Parties therefore agree as follows Article I Subject to the limitations of Article V, the parties hereto will exchange information in the following fields : 1 Came into force on 3 August 1955, in accordance with article VIII.

ACORDO DE COOPERA AO PARA USOS CIVIS DE ENERGIA ATOMICA ENTRE 0 GOV'RNO DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DA AMtRICA E 0 GOVtRNO DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL Considerando que o uso pacifico de energia at6mica apresenta perspectivas promissoras para t6da a humanidade; Considerando que o Gov~rno dos Estados Unidos da America e o Gov~rno dos Estados Unidos do Brasil desejam cooperar miituamente no desenvolvimento do uso pacifico de energia at~mica ; Considerando que se encontram bern adiantados o projeto e o aperfeigoamento de vArios tipos de reatores de pesquisa (tal como estA definido no Artigo X d~ste Ac6rdo) ; Considerando que reatores de pesquisa sdo diteis para a produgao de quantidades experimentais de is6topos radioativos, para a terapia m~dica e para numerosas outras atividades de pesquisa, e que, igualmente, constituem meio de proporcionar valioso adestramento e experi~ncia em engenharia e ci~ncia nucleares, aproveitAveis para o desenvolvimento de outros usos pacificos de energia at6mica, inclusive de energia nuclear para fins civis ; Considerando que o Gov~rno dos Estados Unidos do Brasil deseja levar avante um programa de pesquisas e aperfeigoamento, tendo em vista a concretizagao de uso pacifico e humanitgrio de energia at6mica, e obter assist~ncia do Govarno e da indfistria dos Estados Unidos da America para 6sse programa; e Considerando que o Govfrno dos Estados Unidos da America, representado pela Comissao de Energia At6mica dos Estados Unidos da America (doravante designada por "Comissao"), deseja auxiliar o Gov~rno dos Estados Unidos do Brasil em tal programa; As Partes Contratantes resolvem acordar o seguinte Artigo I Obedecidas as limitac6es do Artigo V, as Partes Contratantes trocardo informagbes s6bre os seguintes assuntos :

development of such peaceful uses of atomic energy ; and<br />

in such a program;<br />

The Parties therefore agree as follows<br />

Article I<br />
