In order to determine the cause of your problem, the doctor has prescribed a stool specimen.
It is very important that you follow the instructions below when collecting your sample and when returning it to
the lab or (centre de prélèvements) to assure the reliability of the results and to avoid the need to repeat the
sampling.
1. Bring the samples to the (centre de prélèvements) or lab as soon as you have taken them or within 48 hours.
See the chart for the conservation of the specimen.
2. You need 1 to 2 spoonfuls(spoon found in the lid of the container) of stool for the sample, if blood is visible in
the stool take it from that area and 1-2 spoonfuls if semi-formed or liquid stool and place it in the container
provided. Secure the top onto the container and shake to mix ( if the container has a liquid in it) be sure the
specimen has mixed with the transport medium (the liquid)
3. Place all the equipment you will need to collect the sample in the bathroom :
• Containers you received from the hospital or your doctor.
• Some « saran wrap », a disposable plastic spoon if none provided, or wooden coffee stirrer.(used
to collect the sample)
4. Use a large clean plastic container (i.e. margarine container) or place a piece of « Saran wrap »securely
under the toilet seat leaving a bit of a hollow and remember to place it so that you can urinate into the
toilet.(urine must not mix with the stool sample).
5. The hospital or your doctor gave you containers according to the tests to be done.
N.B. In certain containers there is a liquid and you must be very careful, it is poisonous, do
not ingest and keep out of the reach of children.
6. It is very important to take the samples at 24 hour intervals. (Do not take them all on the same day).
7. Your containers must be well identified : either with a sticker from the CHUS or you must write your full
name, Medicare number and the date and time you collected the sample. (In this case, the prescription
from the doctor must also be sent with the specimen).
8. Return the samples to the « centre de prélèvements » or lab from Monday to Friday during the working hours
of the centre you have chosen, or to the emergency room of the CHUS after hours.
