Table 1 – Month and year of seed collection, seed size and seed dry mass of three Calligonum species.
Species
for 30 min (47, 44 and 43% for C. comosum,
C. azel and C. arich, respectively). Seeds of
C. arich had significantly lower seed mortality
than those of C. comosum and C. azel relative
to the control and other treatments (Figure
5). C. arich had larger seeds (9.30 mm ±
1.28) than C. comosum and C. azel (6.59 mm
± 0.70 and 7.52 mm ± 0.74) respectively, but
C. comosum had a greater seed dry mass
(47.50 mg ± 9.42) than C. arich and C. azel
(39.50 ± 12.03 mg and 44.50 ± 12.44 mg)
respectively (Table 1).
Discussion
Date of seed
collection
Seeds of many desert and semi-desert plants
fails to germinate because of the impermeable
seed coat. Under natural conditions, numerous
factors act alone or in combination to produce
the crack of the tegumentary barrier:
temperature oscillation, dry-wet period alternation,
soil microorganism action and chemical
scarification (Baskin & Baskin 1998).
Following the release of Calligonum seeds
over summer, seeds are in contact with a high
temperature and a low water potential soil
(Dhief et al. 2009).
Length of seed
(mm)
Diameter of seed
(mm)
Seed mass
(mg)
C. comosum May 2007 6.59 ± 0.70 4.13 ± 0.53 47.50 ± 9.42
C. azel May 2007 7.52 ± 0.74 3.86 ± 0.49 44.50 ± 12.44
C. arich June 2007 9.30 ± 1.28 3.45 ± 0.30 39.50 ± 12.03
Seed size and seed dry mass are mean ± SE of 20 randomly selected seeds from each species.
