Container Maintenance<br />
When on board the ship, maintain the container<br />
by simply washing it with fresh<br />
water; any use of chemicals is strongly<br />
discouraged.<br />
If using fresh water is not sufficient to ensure<br />
acceptable cleaning, use of an ordinary<br />
auto shampoo is recommended.<br />
Autopolish may also be used to restore a<br />
shining surface.<br />
Service Information<br />
On the top surface of the container's upper<br />
shell, or in the pocket at the top of the valise,<br />
you will find a date label system (see the<br />
picture below), which indicates when the<br />
liferaft should be handed in for ordinary<br />
service at a VIKING servicing station.<br />
Installation on Board The Ship<br />
It is recommended to inspect the installation<br />
on board the ship once a week; in particular,<br />
check that the lashing strap is tight,<br />
and that the container is properly secured<br />
to the cradle/railing.<br />
If the lashing strap is slack, tighten it using<br />
the buckle next to the quick-release unit.<br />
Adapt the inspection frequency depending<br />
on how often the lashing strap is found to<br />
be slack/loose.<br />
Transport and Storage<br />
It is recommended to transport the liferaft<br />
in a horizontal position and on a smooth<br />
surface to avoid scratches in the container.<br />
During transport, no other equipment<br />
should be placed next to or on top of the<br />
container, as scratches easily occur (surface<br />
damage).<br />
In principle, liferafts in valises should be<br />
transported following the same recommendations,<br />
although primarily to avoid<br />
damage of the equipment.<br />
For on-shore storage of liferafts, whether<br />
packed in container or valise, it is recommended<br />
that they are stored in a dedicated<br />
location to ensure that the life-saving equipment<br />
is always immediately ready for use.<br />

Helicopter Rescue<br />
During any kind of helicopter rescue when<br />
inflatable liferafts are involved, the arch<br />
tube should be emptied of air so that the<br />
canopy may be laid down in the liferaft.<br />
Otherwise it will work as a sail and aggravate<br />
the situation.<br />
