Container Maintenance
When on board the ship, maintain the container
by simply washing it with fresh
water; any use of chemicals is strongly
discouraged.
If using fresh water is not sufficient to ensure
acceptable cleaning, use of an ordinary
auto shampoo is recommended.
Autopolish may also be used to restore a
shining surface.
Service Information
On the top surface of the container's upper
shell, or in the pocket at the top of the valise,
you will find a date label system (see the
picture below), which indicates when the
liferaft should be handed in for ordinary
service at a VIKING servicing station.
Installation on Board The Ship
It is recommended to inspect the installation
on board the ship once a week; in particular,
check that the lashing strap is tight,
and that the container is properly secured
to the cradle/railing.
If the lashing strap is slack, tighten it using
the buckle next to the quick-release unit.
Adapt the inspection frequency depending
on how often the lashing strap is found to
be slack/loose.
Transport and Storage
It is recommended to transport the liferaft
in a horizontal position and on a smooth
surface to avoid scratches in the container.
During transport, no other equipment
should be placed next to or on top of the
container, as scratches easily occur (surface
damage).
In principle, liferafts in valises should be
transported following the same recommendations,
although primarily to avoid
damage of the equipment.
For on-shore storage of liferafts, whether
packed in container or valise, it is recommended
that they are stored in a dedicated
location to ensure that the life-saving equipment
is always immediately ready for use.
Helicopter Rescue
During any kind of helicopter rescue when
inflatable liferafts are involved, the arch
tube should be emptied of air so that the
canopy may be laid down in the liferaft.
Otherwise it will work as a sail and aggravate
the situation.
