Bel exemplaire de l'édition originale de ce texte fondateur de l'historiographie
byzantine, considérée comme un élément à part entière de l'historiographie de la nation
grecque.
Spyridon Zampelios (1815-1881), né à Leucade, étudia à Corfou à la fameuse Académie
Ionienne, avant de parfaire ses connaissances en Italie, à Pisa. Il fut le premier historien à
apporter les preuves de la continuité historique entre la Grèce antique et la Grèce moderne.
Pour lui, la période byzantine n'est que la conséquence de la conquête romaine sur la nation
grecque, à savoir un ajout du christianisme à l'hellénisme ; elle n'est en aucun cas la
disparition de la nation grecque, mais bien au contraire le lien logique entre les deux périodes.
The german historian Fallmerayer supported that " the Greek nation had disappeared because
of the descent of Slavs and Albanians to Greek territory (6th-10th century).
The first one to be charged with the completion of the task of opposing the theory of
Fallmerayer was Spyridon Zampelios … Zampelios became interested in the Byzantium and
attempted to prove that it was Greek. A point of junction in his proposal is the term Greek-
Christian, that is the union of Hellenism and Christianity. According to Zampelios, the
osmosis of these two different traditions (ancient Greek civilisation, Christianity) took place
inside the Byzantine Empire, and it gradually penetrated and stamped it. ..On sources of the
New Greek Nationality from 800 to 1000 A.D. (1857) the Byzantium was organically placed
in a new perspective as regarded the course of the Greek nation and the unbroken continuation
of its civilisation from Antiquity till the 19th century. In addition, Zampelios introduced a
tripartite pattern of narration of the History of the Greek nation: ancient Hellenism, medieval
Hellenism, modern Hellenism. Within this perspective, the Byzantium was seen as a
cradle of shaping the special character of the modern (Greek-Christian) civilisation."
