La Mission culturelle française, l’Institut français
et l'Association Metropolis
présentent une rétrospective
Du 7 au 16 février 2011
Metropolis Empire Sofil - Achrafieh
The French Cultural Mission in Lebanon and the Metropolis Association pay a
tribute to one of the greatest French filmmakers of all times, Eric Rohmer. One
year after his death, Rohmer comes back through a retrospective of 10 of his
films that will allow the Lebanese audience to discover more about this observer
of human passions.
Major player of the French New Wave movement along with such reputed
directors as Jean Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, François Truffaut and Claude
Chabrol, Eric Rohmer has directed 50 films throughout his busy career, and left a
big mark on French cinema during the past 50 years.
Thierry Fremaux, General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, considers Eric
Rohmer “a filmmaker whose work was unique,” someone who has managed
to “put rigor in his films despite their apparent lightness, which placed him
among the greatest directors in history.” Fremaux also recalls the “studies” that
were published by this movie critic and writer and which “made him one of the
greatest representatives of cinephilic filmmakers.”
In an article published in French journal [Le Monde] on the 13th of January
2010, Jacques Mandelbaum wrote, “Rohmer implements a very French concept
in art, and cinema in particular. (...) We must emphasize the greatness of this
tradition, its spiritual subtlety, and its sense of impertinence and freedom. And
more, the intelligence with which the director was able to reinvent cinema
according to parameters that involve not only speech, but also something
inextricably associated with it in order to bring forth the mind, a conception
of space and time, an incarnation of the characters, a quiver of the flesh, a
sensitivity to nature. ‘I don’t say, I show,’ he claimed.”
Film critic in Positif, writer and professor at the Lebanese Academy of Fine
Arts (ALBA), Jean-Christophe Ferrari will present the retrospective Les
Contes d’Eric Rohmer on Monday, February 7th.
Since his directorial debut in 1959, The Sign of Leo, and until his death in
January 2010 at the age of 89 years, French filmmaker Eric Rohmer has not
ceased to experiment with the theme of human and love relationships.
But before kicking off his long cinematographic career and shooting more than
50 short and feature films for cinema and television, Rohmer has been a teacher,
a writer and a film critic. He has founded La Gazette du cinéma through which
he has met Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Jacques Rivette and Claude
Chabrol. Together, they have written for Les Cahiers du cinéma, which Rohmer
would become its editor-in-chief in 1957, and the group would go on to establish
the French “New Wave”.
In 1959, he has directed his first feature, The Sign of Leo, which, back then, has
shocked with its innovative aspect. The film has been produced by Chabrol with
whom he has written a study on Alfred Hitchcock. In 1963, he has resigned from
les Cahiers du cinéma, met Barbet Schroeder and created with him Les Films du
Losange, the company that would produce the majority of his films.
He would then start preparing for the first of his major cycles: “Six Moral Tales”
(1962 – 1972). Rohmer has presented this six-film-cycle, which includes the
acclaimed My Night at Maud’s and Claire’s Knee, by saying:”While the narrator
is in search of a woman, he meets someone else who captures his attention until
he rediscovers the first woman he was looking for”. Rohmer has now secured
himself a place on the cinematographic map thanks to his singular light but
sophisticated style and his literary dialogues.
Within the 1980s, he has directed “Comedies and Proverbs”, a cycle in which
each of its six films is based on a popular saying. The Green Ray / Summer,
which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1986, was among this
cycle’s films.
In the 1990’s, Rohmer has worked on his third cycle, “Tales of the Four Seasons”,
that would see him push his study of love games even further. He has winded
up his career with “Historical Dramas” which includes his last film, Romance of
Astree and Celadon, released in 2007.
His film crew has always been limited and composed essentially of collaborators
with whom he has worked on several films. As to the actors, Rohmer has shot
with established ones such as Jean-Louis Trintignant (My Night at Maud’s),
but also, and more often, with unknown ones. He has launched the careers of
Fabrice Luchini and Arielle Dombasle, both of whom have acted in the epic tale
Perceval, based on the novel of Chretien de Troyes, and for which Rohmer has
won the Méliès Prize in 1979.
Rohmer has always been keen on letting his actors improvise. “I don’t say things,
I show them, I show people acting, talking. It’s all I am capable of doing, and
here lie my real words,” he used to say.

Musician Pierre enjoys idleness and nightlife more
than composing his sonata, and regularly borrows
money. One day, he receives a telegram informing
him of the death of his rich aunt. Convinced he’s
in for a windfall, he throws a party with the money
of a friend. He soon discovers that his aunt has
disinherited him in favour of his cousin.
Left to his own devices, Adrien decides to spend his
vacation in the quietude of a large house. But the
villa already has two occupants: his friend Daniel, an
artist, and Haydée, a woman he does not know who
collects lovers. Adrien pushes her into his friend’s
arms, but Daniel soon has to leave.
Louise lives with Rémi. He is an architect, she is an
interior decorator. Their lives would be perfect if
Rémi were less of a homebody, and if Louise were
not such a night owl. One evening, beneath a full
moon, she succumbs to the charms of a sensual
dancer. As day breaks she realises that she would
much rather be with Rémi.
spontaneity; the word, quite bluntly, is masterpiece.»
Jules Verne l’incite à reprendre espoir.
before the summer vacations. She then ends up in
Biarritz where she has several desultory encounters.
The advice of a Swedish woman only deepens her
solitude until a conversation on Jules Vernes’ Green
Ray gives her rise to a new hope.
