rencontres : la correspondance des élèves
d’anglais langue étrangère | Letters
Come to Life with ESL Pen-Pals
Les échanges épistolaires alimentent la littérature
depuis des siècles mais sont, aujourd’hui, en voie de
disparition. Nos élèves de Cinquième ESL viennent
cependant de tout
apprendre de cet art,
de surcroit, dans une
deuxième langue !
« Cela les a passionnés,
raconte leur professeur Shehla
Awan, parce qu’on leur
demande d’écrire des lettres en
anglais à un mystérieux
inconnu. Cela s’est avéré une
expérience merveilleuse. Ils
attendaient les retours de
courrier avec excitation. »
Seize d’entre eux ont ainsi
correspondu avec seize autres
élèves de Hommocks Middle
School inscrits en français
débutant.
« Ils ont ainsi tous eu la
possibilité de pratiquer leur
anglais ou leur français et cela
a nourri de fantastiques
échanges épistolaires entre les
deux classes, continue-t-elle.
L’arrivée du courrier était
toujours un moment de grande excitation. Et tous ces élèves ont ainsi
eu la chance de communiquer avec d’autres enfants de leur âge et de
leur niveau scolaire, et de découvrir, qui une école publique américaine,
qui notre école bilingue si particulière… »
Le groupe d’élèves américains a même eu chance de poursuivre
cette découverte dans nos locaux un après-midi, après un déjeuner
couronné de crêpes au Nutella ! n
Despite a rich centuries-old tradition,
epistolary literature is almost on its way to
extinction in this day and age. However,
FASNY seventh grade
ESL students have been
well-taught in this art of
letter writing, and in a
second language to boot!
“It has been very exciting for
our students,” FASNY teacher
Shehla Awan said, “because they
get to write letters to this mystery
person in English. It’s been a
wonderful experience. The
students anxiously await to hear
from each other.” Sixteen FASNY
students have been corresponding
with 16 Hommocks Middle
School students who are enrolled
in level 1 French.
“All students get a chance to
practice their English or French,
and it fosters a wonderful
communication between the two
groups,” Ms. Awan continued.
“Each time the students receive
envelopes with a letter addressed
to them is an exciting moment,
and our students get a chance to communicate with
someone their age and grade level from a local public
American school, and the Hommocks students get to take
a peek at our unique French-American existence.”
They got that “peek” in May when the entire
Hommocks group came to FASNY for an afternoon of
fun and exploration during lunch, which was complete
with crêpes and Nutella! n
