Apprendre à enseigner : la FASNY et l’IUFM | Learning to Teach: IUFM & FASNY Stéphanie Adam, Emilie Ferrari, et | and Christine Dellinger Les enseignants consacrent leur existence à l’éducation des autres, mais qui donc consacre autant de temps à former nos enseignants ? Pour la première fois depuis sa création, la FASNY est allée à la rencontre d’enseignants-stagiaires français et en a accueilli trois en provenance de l’IUFM (Institut Universitaire de Formation des Maîtres) de Nancy-Metz. Pendant deux semaines, les élèves de la FASNY — de la Maternelle au CE1 — ont appris leurs leçons habituelles de visages moins familiers que d’habitude. Stéphanie Adam, Emilie Ferrari et Christine Dellinger — stagiaires françaises en voie de devenir institutrices à l’école primaire — ont travaillé de pair avec les professeurs de la FASNY pour en savoir plus sur notre programme pédagogique bilingue. En dépit de leur très jeune expérience, ils ont tous bien remarqué le caractère hybride de notre école. Teachers dedicate their lives to the education of others, but who dedicates their lives to the education of teachers? For the first time ever, FASNY has reached out to French studentteachers by welcoming three from the IUFM (Instituts Universitaires de Formation des Maîtres) in Nancy-Metz, France. For two weeks, FASNY students from Nursery through Grade 2 learned familiar lessons from not-sofamiliar faces: Stéphanie Adam, Emilie Ferrari, and Christine Dellinger, the French students currently studying to be K through 5 teachers, who were paired with FASNY professionals in order to learn about our bilingual curriculum. Il y a beau n’y avoir, selon Melle Adam, que peu de différences de fond entre les programmes de la FASNY et ceux proposés dans les écoles françaises, la culture et la diversité de notre école encouragent le développement d’un esprit de tolérance, d’autant qu’il s’agit d’un établissement véritablement bilingue. D’autres petites différences encore, liées au fait que nos élèves du primaire, contrairement à ceux de France, connaissent plusieurs enseignants par niveau : Christine a ainsi remarqué, en observant Charles Grenon, que nos élèves se débrouillent mieux dans chaque matière, sans doute parce que chaque enseignant a sa spécialité propre ; et la multitude d’enseignants leur apprend aussi à créer des liens différents avec les adultes. Les classes sont également de taille plus petite qu’en France, remarque Stéphanie, la protégée de notre institutrice de Maternelle Charlotte Thalamas : « avoir 18 élèves par classe — et non 28 comme en France — rend l’enseignement beaucoup plus efficace ». Si les stagiaires françaises sont rentrées chez eux fortes de ce qu’elles y ont appris, notre école s’est aussi enrichie de leur présence : « tout le monde y gagne, explique Christophe Bonnet, Directeur des études françaises. C’est une première étape vers la création d’un réseau d’échange avec les IUFM. Cette visite pourrait nous aider à étendre à l’avenir notre champ de recrutement d’enseignants français. D’autant, ajoute-t-il, que ce programme — le dernier né dans la formation de nos enseignants — nous apporte de nouvelles idées en nous donnant l’occasion de partager nos compétences et de développer de nouveaux savoir-faire. Nous avons d’ailleurs eu beaucoup plus de professeurs volontaires pour les accueillir que de stagiaires eux-mêmes ! Cela montre le dynamisme de notre équipe pédagogique. » M Grenon — un partisan du programme — y voit une expérience enrichissante : « Christine et moi avons pu échanger nos idées et en mettre quelques unes en pratique. Cela m’a aussi permis de voir mes élèves interagir avec un enseignant différent, et d’observer leur processus d’apprentissage. Je fais cela tous les jours, il est vrai, mais la distance rend l’observation plus objective. » Les élèves de la FASNY ont également accueilli cette nouveauté avec enthousiasme, et Christine avec beaucoup de chaleur, ce qui a facilité considérablement leurs rapports. Du côté des stagiaires, cette visite a été riche en premières fois ! C’était notamment leur premier séjour aux USA. Et leurs familles d’accueil — Simon Noble et Patricia Noble- Beeck, David et Véronique Dick — ont veillé à qu’elles profitent de tout ce que New York peut offrir, de l’Empire State Building à Central Park, d’Ellis à Coney Island, sans oublier Broadway entre deux musées ! La visite a dû leur faire quelque impression, puisque Stéphanie, Emilie et Christine auraient bien volontiers prolongé leur séjour et envisagent de retourner aux Etats-Unis après la fin de leurs études. n through their powers of observation, they all concluded that FASNY is indeed an educational hybrid. There may not be much of a difference between what is taught at FASNY and what is taught in France, according to Ms. Adam, but FASNY’s rich culture and diversity encourages a tolerant environment. And, of course, there’s the fact that FASNY is indeed a true bilingual institution, but even smaller nuances arose. “In primary school in France, students do not have different teachers,” Christine, who observed Charles Grenon, said. “Students obviously fare better here at FASNY in all subjects as each teacher has their specialty. They also form different relationships by having different teachers.” “The class sizes here are smaller than in France,” Stéphanie, Nursery teacher Charlotte Thalamas’s protégé, said. “There are 28 pupils to a class in France, and the fact that there are 18 pupils in a class here makes learning more effective.” While the French students will undoubtedly be taking home some of what they learned, in turn, FASNY was also enriched by their presence. “It’s a win-win situation,” explained Director of French Language Studies Christophe Bonnet. “We’re building a community, and it’s the first step to a closer relationship with one of the IUFM schools; this visit may help increase our pool of recruitment for French teachers in the future.” And, as Mr. Bonnet added, this program — which is the latest trend in teacher training — also benefits FASNY teachers. “This program will bring some new ideas,” he said. “It gives our teachers the opportunity to share their expertise and develop a new set of skills. And, what was great was that we had many more teachers volunteering to welcome student-teachers than we had student-teachers coming. It shows a strong dynamism within our teacher staff.” After such a successful student teaching experience, Mr. Bonnet said he hopes to continue with more IUFM programs next year. Mr. Grenon, an advocate for the exchange, said it was a great experience for him. “Christine and I were able to exchange ideas and actually put some into practice. It gave me the opportunity to see my students interact with another teacher. I was able to observe my students during the learning process. It’s true, I do this everyday, but having a certain distance helped me make more objective observations.” Even the FASNY students welcomed this new opportunity; he explained how receptive they were to Christine by giving her a warm welcome and making it easy to establish a relationship. There were even more firsts for the student-teachers because it was their first visit to the United States. And, their host-families — Simon Noble and Patricia Noble-Beeck and Véronique and David Dick — made sure they saw all that New York had to offer from the Empire State Building to Central Park, every island from Ellis to Coney, and not to mention some Broadway shows and museums in between. The entire experience must have made quite the impression, as Stéphanie, Emilie, and Christine all said they wished to stay longer and would like to return to the States after finishing their studies. n Automne | Autumn 2008 www.FASNY.org 65
