The rain in Spain may fall mainly on the plain, but the
French-Spanish school, Le Bon Soleil, shines brightly just
outside of Barcelona, and last February, FASNY 10th and
11th graders got to experience it firsthand. “It’s the first
time we’ve ever had a program like this,” said Anne
Wassen, a FASNY Spanish teacher who helped
coordinate the program. “It was such a nice opportunity
and the students loved Barcelona; when they got off the
plane, they just couldn’t believe how warm and sunny it
was, plus all of the palm trees!”
On this 10-day exotic excursion were 13 FASNY
Spanish students: Jasmine Arnould ’09, Ludivine Baugier
’09, Victoire de Neufville ’09, Flaam Hardy ’09, Charlie
Javice ’10, Terence Michel ’10, Marie-Lilas Onanga ’10,
Stéphanie Roux ’09, Myriam Varjacques ’10, Léah
Varjacques ’10, Quentin Voquer ’09, Clémence Wiart ’09,
and Noore Yazigi ’09. And, of course Anne was there along
with fellow teacher Raquel Fontaine. “I had been to Spain
before. My grandfather used to own an apartment in Torre
d’embarra, and we would go there every summer,”
Stéphanie Roux said. “But, at first on this trip, I was very
nervous; I was hoping that we would get along with the
Spanish students.” Luckily, for Stéphanie, as with most of
the FASNY students, she said she loved her host-family.
“My host-family was great. I didn’t see my host-parents
very often because they worked, but when I did, they were
very nice. My host-brother, Antonio, was a little shy at first,
but after, he started opening up and treating me like one of
his best friends. It made all the difference.”
So, what was a day like in the life of a FASNY
student during the trip? An excerpt from Flaam Hardy’s
journal — translated from the original Spanish — can
give you a better perspective: “We visited the southern
part of Barcelona on a tour-bus…We went to El Poblé…
I loved it…Then we took the bus to Puerto Vell (I think)…
where we ate paella. It was a very sunny day. Then, we
went back to the beach where we bought Jasmine a
birthday gift. Later, we all went to Mariola’s house…”
Ms. Wassen said that when it came time to leave, she
could sense that FASNY students were a bit melancholy,
