L’an passé, un
Scarsdale.
Under the wings of Agnès, FASNY’s Extension Program is
only going to soar. Last year, with a majority of patrons
hailing from Larchmont, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle,
and Scarsdale, Extension Program activities were offered
from Nursery straight through the upper grades and
were wildly popular with Grade 1 students. “While the
majority of parents who participate in Extension Program
activities work outside the home,” Agnès explained, “a
lot of them just want to expand their children’s horizons
and afford them the opportunity to spend time with
their peers and teachers in a more relaxed setting.”
The variety of clubs and the high quality of instruction
seem to please most families, as noted in a recent survey.
In particular, Extension Program participants and parents
are taking advantage of enhanced after-school care in
the Garderie. To sign up for winter term classes, please
conviviality. “The Extension Program is a good name for
it because it really is an extension of the School,” she said.
“From a parent’s point of view, the kids are in a safe
environment where they’re not only learning, but also
having fun.”
Agnès was born in Senegal and moved to France
when she was 16 to finish her schooling. She studied
economics at Université Nancy II and then completed her
Master’s degree in Economics at Université Paris
Dauphine. Most recently, she worked at the Alliance
Française of Boston, where she was the education director
for four years. During her time at the Alliance, Agnès
successfully launched and marketed French classes for
children, tripling student enrollment in the program. After
leaving Boston late last year, she moved to Stamford,
Connecticut, where she currently lives with her husband
Djibril and her two sons, Karim and Alexandre.
Karim directly benefits from his mom’s work at
FASNY, as he’s enrolled in a number of Extension
Program activities. For Agnès, the arrangement couldn’t be
easier. “For the parents, and me, the convenience of having
the children in the same place for school and their
extracurricular activities is a huge
plus.” Karim recently made his
debut in FASNY’s second grade,
while two-year-old Alexandre is still
in daycare. Agnès enjoys watching
Karim’s journey through the
bilingual system. “I see what they’re
doing in class, and it reminds me of
what I used to do at school in
Senegal,” she said. “It’s amazing to
see how much he’s changing. He
comes home speaking more French
every day!”
Having lived in several foreign
countries, Agnès recognizes the
importance of having her sons
embrace their Senegalese roots.
Fortunately, Karim’s experience so
far at FASNY has been a step in
that direction. “Before Karim came
to FASNY, it was hard for us to
instill a sense of being Senegalese
in him,” she said. “Of course, he is
also American, but even my
parents were surprised at how
much being in an American public
school affected how he saw himself.
Here at FASNY, I feel that there is
a space for him to be whoever he is;
he doesn’t have to fit into a mold.
Recently, he’s started saying that
he’s Senegalese, and I think it’s a
direct result of being around
people from other countries.” n
