Eighth Grade Graduation —
Classmates “Stand By” Their Friends
The jump from Middle School to High School is a big one: classes change, teachers
change, people change. This year, FASNY eighth graders had one last gathering to
celebrate a new beginning, while closing yet another chapter in their lives.
Saying farewell to those classmates set to attend other schools in the fall may have
been bittersweet — it even included a student-rendition of Stand by Me by Ben E. King
— but the sweetest thing was the camaraderie between friends, classmates, and
teachers alike. And, since FASNY has opened 12th grade this fall, there has been a
record decrease in students leaving after completing eighth grade.
Even though things were about to change for the Class of 2012, one FASNY
tradition that stood strong was the rose presentation where the graduates gave roses to
their teachers, parents, siblings, and other loved ones to acknowledge everyone who
helped make that moment possible.
Head of Upper School Joël Peinado presented diplomas to 48 graduates, and
Head of School Robert Leonhardt advised each student to “be yourself and do not
try to be something you’re not” in his address. n
