groupe se réunit séparément. » Les plus âgés aiment à se retrouver
dans des lieux plus calmes alors que les plus jeunes aiment se réunir
le vendredi soir après le travail pour partager de bons moments entre
copains à Charlottesville. Un lien fort unit cependant ces deux
générations, lien qui existe grâce au talent de Garrick.
Tout a commencé il y a de cela 10 ans, quand les parents de
Garrick ont acheté sur Main Street, à Gordonsville. « Ils ont acheté
cet endroit pour une bouchée de pain, souligne t-il. Après avoir terminé
NYU, j’ai commencé à faire quelques petits travaux. Je m’occupais de
la rénovation et maman de la décoration. » Garrrick a commencé à
travailler pour une société appelée Oak Hill mais, le 1er janvier
2008, il a décidé d’ouvrir sa propre société, Historic Builders.
« Nous ne sommes que trois employés, mais tous de cultures et de
pays différents. En y repensant, ce n’était peut-être pas le moment
idéal, économiquement parlant, pour ouvrir une société. » Cependant,
Garrick tient bon.
« Il y a des gens qui préfèrent tout raser. Moi, je préfère rénover !
Nous faisons du travail de qualité. Nous reprenons un bâtiment
historique et lui redonnons sa splendeur coloniale, en y ajoutant le
confort intérieur. Tout est neuf mais le côté ancien est préservé. » Et il
n’a pas tort. Descendre Main Street, c’est comme voyager dans le
temps. Les boutiques en briques de style colonial longent la rue mais,
lorsque vous y entrez, vous êtes littéralement rappelés au présent, clim’
comprise. Il dit que le chantier dont il est le plus fier est le restaurant
français Pomme : « Imaginez le film Ratatouille, les rats en moins
bien sûr ! C’est un peu cher, mais sympa. »
Mieux que cela même. C’est tout un poème. Au mur, une peinture
d’un vieux champ à la française, le tout dans une ambiance colorée à
la décoration originale – comme cette tête de vache orange et blanche ou
ces statuettes en forme de coqs. Pomme n’est pas qu’un restaurant, c’est
une invitation au voyage. Et, pour ne pas faire défaut à l’image de la
France, il paraît que c’est également une excellente adresse.
Un autre projet lui tient à cœur : Hort Couture, le Garden
Center, était un ancien garage Ford avec une pompe à essence rétro.
Garrick Gupton s’occupe actuellement de la rénovation d’une vieille
maison à demi-niveaux. Mais son travail sur Main Street n’est pas
tout à fait fini : « J’ai rénové la plupart des boutiques,
approximativement les deux tiers de la rue. Pour vous donner une idée,
cela correspond à dix ou douze commerces et à dix ou douze

“There’s definitely an eclectic community here in
Virginia,” he said. Perhaps a little bit of FASNY rests in
Virginia as well.
“There’s an older French community here and an
unofficial grouping of younger generations,” Gupton
explained. “Each group has its own get-togethers.” There’s
a group centered on a more mature niche and those from
the younger crowd who meet on Fridays for some good fun
and good company in Charlottesville. Yet, there is a link
between the two, and it’s found in Garrick’s renovations.
It all started when his parents bought some property
on North Main Street in Gordonsville 10 years ago.
“They bought it for next to nothing,” he said. “Then,
after my time at NYU, I started fixing it up. I do the
renovations, and my mother adds to the interior design.”
Initially, Garrick worked for a company called Oak Hill,
but January 1, 2008, he began his own company, Historic
Builders. “It’s really just three guys doing the work, and
we’re an international crowd, too. Thinking about it now,
it might not have been the right time, economically, to
start a business.” Although that may be true, Garrick
appears to be holding his own.
“Some people decide to tear things down. Me? I say
no, fix it up! We do quality renovations; you take an
historic building and give it that colonial feel, but with all
the modern amenities you need. It’s new, but it still has
that old feeling to it.” He isn’t kidding. Walking down
Main Street is like time traveling. Colonial commercial
brick buildings line the street, but when you enter any
store, you are immediately transported back to the
present, air conditioning included. He claims his most
gratifying work is the French restaurant Pomme: “Think
the movie Ratatouille, minus the rats of course. It’s a little
pricey, but it’s nice.”
It is more than nice. It is an adventure. With the
mural of a wild French field cascading across one wall and
the lovely ambiance created by the other colorful, quirky
adornments — like the orange and white cow head or the
