Portrait de parents d’anciens élèves Alumni Parent Portrait Le credo de John : force et sécurité | John’s Creed: Strength and Security Pas un seul matin d’été ne passe, pour John Creedon, sans une série de longueurs dans les eaux du Long Island Sound, juste derrière chez lui, à Larchmont, saluant au passage pêcheurs, nageurs et promeneurs curieux. Un rituel presque aussi apaisant que la vision de cet amas de peluches Snoopy sur l’un des fauteuils du salon. Ancien Directeur Général (1980-1983) et Président Directeur Général (1983-1989) de la compagnie Metlife, il s’en explique : « nous nous sommes rendus compte que notre stratégie publicitaire n’avait pas d’impact significatif sur notre clientèle et, lorsque l’on m’a demandé de définir la symbolique du groupe, j’ai tout de suite rétorqué : force et sécurité ». Après plusieurs essais, un vendeur futé a proposé comme visuel publicitaire de montrer Linus en train de suçoter son inséparable couverture de sécurité. Une rencontre entre Charles Schulz, le créateur de Peanuts, et John, alors souscripteur d’assurances chez Metlife, aura suffi pour que 25 ans plus tard, le gang des Peanuts soit toujours l’emblème du groupe, visible sur ses dirigeables et autres produits publicitaires. « Je conserve un dessin dédicacé de Charles Schulz disant : C’est toi et moi, John », nous raconte-t-il, les yeux remplis d’émotion, comme pour ajouter à sa fierté… Il semble que que John Creedon était destiné à sa carrière (anciennement Metropolitan Life Insurance, le groupe a été rebaptisé MetLife sur proposition de John). Né dans un appartement modeste du Queens — dont le propriétaire n’était autre que Metlife — il a travaillé pendant six mois, à sa sortie du lycée, dans la division Groupe de ce géant de l’assurance, avant d’intégrer la NAVY à l’âge de 18 ans. Après avoir servi sur l’USS Caliente pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a repris sa place dans le groupe. « Dans mon bureau, explique-t-il, je garde la photo d’un navire au port, torpillé par un sous-marin japonais, torpille qui nous était initialement destinée. Cette photo me rappelle combien la vie est fragile et ne tient souvent qu’à un fil. » Tout en suivant les cours du soir de la faculté de droit de NYU, John est parvenu à élever ses enfants et à grimper un à un les échelons de la société. Soixante-six ans plus tard, il possède toujours un bureau à New York et est resté en contact avec la société dans laquelle il a Automne | Autumn 2008 www.FASNY.org 111 : John & Diane Creedon For John Creedon, not one summer morning passes without a swim in Long Island sound, which reaches out — beckoning to sailors, admirers, and swimmers alike — behind his home in Larchmont. It’s almost as comforting a site as the pack of plush Snoopies nestled in a chair in his living room. “We tested the advertising plan at MetLife and found it wasn’t making an impact, and when asked what I wanted the company to represent, I said strength and security,” John, who served as President (1980-1983) and CEO (1983- 1989) of the company, offers in explanation. After several iterations, a savvy marketer offered up Linus sucking on a security blanket. A meeting with Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts characters and himself a MetLife policy holder, was successful, and 25 years later the Peanuts gang, most prominently on blimps (a Creedon introduction) and other advertising, are still the spokescharacters for the company. “I have a signed photo from Schulz saying ‘It was you and I, John,’” he relays with sparkling eyes that reinforce that it is clearly a prized possession. It could be said that John Creedon was born to be a MetLifer (formerly the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company; the shortened name was John’s idea). He was physically born in a housing unit in Queens, New York that was owned by MetLife, worked following high school for six months at the insurance giant in the group department before he entered the Navy at age 18, and came back to that job after World War II and serving on the USS Caliente. John notes, “As a reminder of the fragility and mystery of life, I have a sobering image hanging in my office of a ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in an anchorage that was first scheduled for the Caliente.” He attended night school at NYU for both college and law school while raising a family and working his way up in the firm. Sixty-six years later, he still maintains an office in New York City and remains in contact with the company from
