Depuis son plus jeune âge, Juan <strong>de</strong> Marcos est dévoré par une idée fixe : mo<strong>de</strong>rniser <strong>le</strong> « son »,<br />
la musique traditionnel<strong>le</strong> cubaine. C’est au rythme <strong>de</strong> cet alliage sensuel et syncrétique<br />
d’ingrédients latins et africains qu’il a passé son enfance. Il sait que c’est la seu<strong>le</strong> manière<br />
pour que ce pan <strong>de</strong> l’histoire <strong>de</strong> son pays ne tombe pas dans l’oubli et qu’il continue <strong>de</strong> faire<br />
danser <strong>le</strong>s générations futures. Chef d’orchestre, guitariste, joueur <strong>de</strong> tres (petite guitare<br />
cubaine) et chanteur, il n’a eu <strong>de</strong> cesse <strong>de</strong> multiplier <strong>le</strong>s aventures col<strong>le</strong>ctives pour mener<br />
son projet à bonne fin. Il n’a d’ail<strong>le</strong>urs que 22 ans quand il fon<strong>de</strong> son premier groupe phare,<br />
Sierra Maestra, du nom <strong>de</strong> la chaîne montagneuse <strong>de</strong> l’Oriente, lieu-clé <strong>de</strong> la Révolution<br />
Cubaine. Année après année, l’orchestre rayonne aux quatre coins du mon<strong>de</strong> jusqu’à<br />
séduire en 1994 Nick Gold, patron du label World Circuit. Ensemb<strong>le</strong>, ils déci<strong>de</strong>nt alors <strong>de</strong><br />
faire revivre la tradition du big band cubain <strong>de</strong>s années 50. Juan <strong>de</strong> Marcos part donc en<br />
quête <strong>de</strong> vingt-cinq <strong>de</strong>s meil<strong>le</strong>urs musiciens <strong>de</strong> son pays : <strong>le</strong>s Afro-Cuban All-Stars étaient<br />
nés. Lors <strong>de</strong>s sessions studio <strong>de</strong> 1996, ils en profitent pour enregistrer trois disques dont<br />
<strong>le</strong> fameux « Buena Vista Social Club ». Le retour sur <strong>le</strong> <strong>de</strong>vant <strong>de</strong> la scène <strong>de</strong> sémillantes<br />
anciennes gloires tel<strong>le</strong>s que Ibrahím Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Omara Portuondo sera <strong>le</strong><br />
détonateur d’un renouveau inespéré <strong>de</strong> la musique afro-cubaine dans <strong>le</strong> mon<strong>de</strong> entier. Le<br />
fantasme <strong>de</strong> Juan <strong>de</strong> Marcos s’était donc réalisé. Pour autant, celui qu’on surnomme dorénavant<br />
<strong>le</strong> « Quincy Jones <strong>de</strong> Cuba » ne compte pas s’arrêter en si bon chemin. Car parallè<strong>le</strong>ment<br />
au Buena Vista Social Club, <strong>le</strong> chef d’orchestre a continué <strong>de</strong> faire <strong>de</strong> son Afro-Cuban<br />
All Stars un ébouriffant vivier <strong>de</strong> ta<strong>le</strong>nts <strong>de</strong> La Havane. Melting-pot générationnel, ce big<br />
band a continué non seu<strong>le</strong>ment à revisiter avec allégresse <strong>le</strong> boléro, <strong>le</strong> mambo ou <strong>le</strong> « danzón<br />
», mais aussi à l’enrichir d’éléments plus mo<strong>de</strong>rnes et urbains comme la timba.<br />
