Introduction : <strong>le</strong> di<strong>le</strong>mme <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> Les traditionnels « <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> » feront bientôt partie du passé. Aujourd'hui, <strong>le</strong> poste <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> est <strong>de</strong>venu un véritab<strong>le</strong> environnement utilisateur, défini par un profil composé d'applications, <strong>de</strong> documents et <strong>de</strong> données <strong>de</strong> configuration. En parallè<strong>le</strong>, <strong>le</strong>s utilisateurs ont <strong>de</strong> plus en plus recours à <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> périphériques mobi<strong>le</strong>s : ordinateurs portab<strong>le</strong>s, smart phones ou disques <strong>de</strong> stockage amovib<strong>le</strong>s. Ils ont donc besoin d'environnements <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> accessib<strong>le</strong>s à tout moment, où qu'ils se trouvent. Les solutions traditionnel<strong>le</strong>s <strong>de</strong> gestion <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> n'offrent pas la sécurité adéquate pour <strong>le</strong>s données au niveau <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong>, en particulier lorsque cel<strong>le</strong>s-ci sont stockées ou utilisées à distance ou à partir <strong>de</strong> périphériques mobi<strong>le</strong>s (ordinateurs portab<strong>le</strong>s ou disques USB). Comme <strong>le</strong> met en avant Forrester Research, « la gestion <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> opérations quotidiennes <strong>de</strong> maintenance d'un environnement PC n'est pas une tâche faci<strong>le</strong>. » Le provisionnement, l'administration et la maintenance <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> traditionnels peuvent s'avérer onéreux et comp<strong>le</strong>xes, en particulier dans <strong>le</strong>s environnements étendus et distribués géographiquement, composés <strong>de</strong> divers systèmes d'exploitation, périphériques et points d'accès. • Sauvegar<strong>de</strong> et récupération. Les applications, données et documents hébergés sur <strong>le</strong>s <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> sont extrêmement diffici<strong>le</strong>s à sauvegar<strong>de</strong>r en raison <strong>de</strong> la nature décentralisée <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> traditionnels. Pour la plupart <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> entreprises, la sauvegar<strong>de</strong> d'un site <strong>de</strong> bureau entier <strong>de</strong> <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> se révè<strong>le</strong> donc peu pratique. Et si un poste <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> tombe en panne ou si un ordinateur portab<strong>le</strong> est perdu, la sauvegar<strong>de</strong> et la récupération peuvent, pour l'utilisateur, prendre <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> heures, voire même <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> jours. • Gestion <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> correctifs et <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> mises à jour. Sur <strong>le</strong>s <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> traditionnels, <strong>le</strong> matériel, <strong>le</strong> système d'exploitation, <strong>le</strong>s applications et <strong>le</strong>s utilisateurs sont tous liés à une machine spécifique. Dès lors, la mise à jour d'un seul <strong>de</strong> ces composants a tendance à provoquer <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> conflits. Par exemp<strong>le</strong>, la mise à jour du matériel fait souvent apparaître <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> conflits <strong>de</strong> drivers avec <strong>le</strong> système d'exploitation. De même, la mise à jour du système d'exploitation engendre invariab<strong>le</strong>ment <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> incompatibilités avec certaines applications. Ces défis majeurs, entre autres, poussent <strong>le</strong>s entreprises à délaisser <strong>le</strong> modè<strong>le</strong> traditionnel du poste <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> monolithique afin <strong>de</strong> se tourner vers une métho<strong>de</strong> fondamenta<strong>le</strong>ment plus efficace pour la gestion <strong>de</strong> <strong>le</strong>ur environnement utilisateur. Désormais, <strong>le</strong>s entreprises i<strong>de</strong>ntifieront <strong>le</strong>urs utilisateurs au moyen <strong>de</strong> critères tels que <strong>le</strong>s tâches, <strong>le</strong>s connaissances ou <strong>le</strong>s superutilisateurs, puis distribueront <strong>le</strong>s <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> en conséquence, <strong>de</strong> façon dynamique. Après avoir discuté avec <strong>le</strong>s entreprises envisageant la virtualisation <strong>de</strong> <strong>le</strong>urs <strong>postes</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>travail</strong> et applications, nous savons que la virtualisation <strong><strong>de</strong>s</strong> clients ne se limite pas à une tendance émergente.
