Washington Post.' Çiller's regime is brutal<br />

WASHINGTON- The Washington Post,<br />

one of America' s most influential newspapers,<br />

today ran an editorial column by Colman<br />

McCarthy that <strong>de</strong>livered heavy blows on<br />

Turkey' s human rights record in the Southeast.<br />

The column, "Monitoring the Monitors in<br />

Turkey," recapped the experiences that<br />

kathym Porter - wife of Rep. John Porter -<br />

shared two weeks ago at a Congressional me<strong>et</strong>ing<br />

of International Human Rights Law Group<br />

[Porter visited Turkey in May to talk to the<br />

arrested DEP <strong>de</strong>puties and she also paid a visit<br />

to Diyarbalor.] But the tone of the article went<br />

beyond Mrs. Porter's scary encounters and<br />

ridiculed the Turkish embassy's and government's<br />

attitu<strong>de</strong> that all reports were lies and<br />

WASHINGTON- According to a reliable<br />

source, Erdallnönü, former chairman of the<br />

Socialist Democrat People's Party (SHP), will<br />

visit the U.S. Senate in Washington on June IS to<br />

attend a me<strong>et</strong>ing on the human rights situation in<br />

Turkey organized by the Commission on Security<br />

and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). Inönü will<br />

be accompanied by Turkish parliamentarians<br />

Cemil Erhan of Agri (the True Path Party), Edip<br />

that Mrs. Porter is "fabricating these stories."<br />

McCarthy's essay ma<strong>de</strong> references to the "governmental<br />

ruthlessness in Southeastern Turkey"<br />

and said: '1'he brutal regime of Prime Minister<br />

Tansu Çiller received more than $400 million<br />

in military aid in 1993, the same year the State<br />

Department reported that 'torture and excessive<br />

use of force by security personnel persisted'<br />

and 'violence In Southeast Turkey ... reached<br />

unprece<strong>de</strong>nted levels.",<br />

The Washington Post piece conclu<strong>de</strong>d with<br />

biting sarcasm: "So, it seems, are Amnesty<br />

International, Helsinki Watch, Human Rights<br />

Watch and members of the Human Rights<br />

Association of Turkey, whose members have<br />

been assassinated, tortured and jailed.<br />

Everyone has it wrong: Turkey's government is<br />

really a champion of peace and justice. But if<br />

you are a Kurd and disagree, watch your back.<br />

If you are an American in Diyarbakrr,cover the<br />

ventilator above the shower." Mrs. Porter<br />

reported at the mentioned Congressional me<strong>et</strong>ing<br />

that somebody watched her through a ventilation<br />

slit while she was taking a shower in<br />

her hotel room in DiyarbakIr.<br />

The Turkish embassy in Washinston claims<br />

Mrs. Porter is making up these stones because<br />

she has,an obsession against Turkey and<br />

tog<strong>et</strong>her with her husband, Rep. Porter they<br />

have <strong>de</strong>dicated themselves to tarnish Turkey's<br />

image in the West. Mrs. Porter is well-known<br />

for her previous participation in Greek-Cypriot<br />

protest marches against the Turkish army's<br />

presence in Cyprus.<br />
