Washington Post.' Çiller's regime is brutal

WASHINGTON- The Washington Post,
one of America' s most influential newspapers,
today ran an editorial column by Colman
McCarthy that delivered heavy blows on
Turkey' s human rights record in the Southeast.
The column, "Monitoring the Monitors in
Turkey," recapped the experiences that
kathym Porter - wife of Rep. John Porter -
shared two weeks ago at a Congressional meeting
of International Human Rights Law Group
[Porter visited Turkey in May to talk to the
arrested DEP deputies and she also paid a visit
to Diyarbalor.] But the tone of the article went
beyond Mrs. Porter's scary encounters and
ridiculed the Turkish embassy's and government's
attitude that all reports were lies and

WASHINGTON- According to a reliable
source, Erdallnönü, former chairman of the
Socialist Democrat People's Party (SHP), will
visit the U.S. Senate in Washington on June IS to
attend a meeting on the human rights situation in
Turkey organized by the Commission on Security
and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). Inönü will
be accompanied by Turkish parliamentarians

McCarthy's essay made references to the "governmental
ruthlessness in Southeastern Turkey"
and said: '1'he brutal regime of Prime Minister

in military aid in 1993, the same year the State
Department reported that 'torture and excessive
use of force by security personnel persisted'
and 'violence In Southeast Turkey ... reached
unprecedented levels.",
The Washington Post piece concluded with
biting sarcasm: "So, it seems, are Amnesty
International, Helsinki Watch, Human Rights
Watch and members of the Human Rights
Association of Turkey, whose members have
been assassinated, tortured and jailed.
Everyone has it wrong: Turkey's government is
really a champion of peace and justice. But if
you are a Kurd and disagree, watch your back.

reported at the mentioned Congressional meeting
that somebody watched her through a ventilation
slit while she was taking a shower in
her hotel room in DiyarbakIr.
The Turkish embassy in Washinston claims
Mrs. Porter is making up these stones because
she has,an obsession against Turkey and
together with her husband, Rep. Porter they
have dedicated themselves to tarnish Turkey's
image in the West. Mrs. Porter is well-known
for her previous participation in Greek-Cypriot
protest marches against the Turkish army's
presence in Cyprus.
