ANKARA- Prime Minister TansuÇiller has said
that the operation known as "Provide Comfort,"
which is deployed in southeast Turkey to protect
the Kurds and other minorities in northern Iraq
against the wrath of the Iraqi army, is of more use
than harm as far as Turkish mterests are concerned.
"It has been seen that the harm which will accrue
from ending this operation will be much greater,"
Çi11er said when addressin8- the parliamentary
group of herTrue Path Party (DYP) on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the leader of one of the main
Kurdish factions in northern Iraq, Massoud
Barzani of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KOP),
has said that the Kurdish experiment in autonomy
has been a failure and has called on the United
Nations to supervise the region. .
Çiller was sp'eaking a day after the National
Security CouncIl met on Monday in an extraordi.
nary session to debate whether the mandate of
Provide Comfort, due to expire at the end of June,
should be extended. The mandate is usually
extended for six months..
It was decided at the end of the meeting, chaired
by President Süleyman Demirel and attended by
Prime Minister Çiller, the Chief of the General
Staff Gen. Dogan Güre~, and other Cabinet ministers,
high-ranking military and civilian officials, to
advise the government to extend the mandate.
"The council decided that there had been no
developments concerning the general situation in
northern Iraq to warrant ending the Provide
Comfort operation," a statement issued after the
meeting Said.
