ANKARA- Prime Minister TansuÇiller has said<br />

that the operation known as "Provi<strong>de</strong> Comfort,"<br />

which is <strong>de</strong>ployed in southeast Turkey to protect<br />

the Kurds and other minorities in northern Iraq<br />

against the wrath of the Iraqi army, is of more use<br />

than harm as far as Turkish mterests are concerned.<br />

"It has been seen that the harm which will accrue<br />

from ending this operation will be much greater,"<br />

Çi11er said when addressin8- the parliamentary<br />

group of herTrue Path Party (DYP) on Tuesday.<br />

Meanwhile, the lea<strong>de</strong>r of one of the main<br />

Kurdish factions in northern Iraq, Massoud<br />

Barzani of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KOP),<br />

has said that the Kurdish experiment in autonomy<br />

has been a failure and has called on the United<br />

Nations to supervise the region. .<br />

Çiller was sp'eaking a day after the National<br />

Security CouncIl m<strong>et</strong> on Monday in an extraordi.<br />

nary session to <strong>de</strong>bate wh<strong>et</strong>her the mandate of<br />

Provi<strong>de</strong> Comfort, due to expire at the end of June,<br />

should be exten<strong>de</strong>d. The mandate is usually<br />

exten<strong>de</strong>d for six months..<br />

It was <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d at the end of the me<strong>et</strong>ing, chaired<br />

by Presi<strong>de</strong>nt Süleyman Demirel and atten<strong>de</strong>d by<br />

Prime Minister Çiller, the Chief of the General<br />

Staff Gen. Dogan Güre~, and other Cabin<strong>et</strong> ministers,<br />

high-ranking military and civilian officials, to<br />

advise the government to extend the mandate.<br />

"The council <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d that there had been no<br />

<strong>de</strong>velopments concerning the general situation in<br />

northern Iraq to warrant ending the Provi<strong>de</strong><br />

Comfort operation," a statement issued after the<br />

me<strong>et</strong>ing Said.<br />
