ANKARA- In continuing operations aaainst the PKK
(outlawed KurQistanWorkers' Party) jet fighters of the 2nd
Tactical AirCommand on Tuesday momina launched an air
s~rikea:gainst a terrorist camp in the Mezi region of
Northern Iraq.All .ofthe planes returned safely ta base.
More than70 PKK terrorists were killed and ammunition
dumps were destroyed in the raid, which took place 20 kilometers
inside Iraqiterritorx, accordi~$ to general staff
spokesman, Colonel Dogu StlahcIOglu.tie said that the terrorists
were,part of a lOO-mangroup which was preparing
for a cross-border assault on Turkey. .
Military sources said a simihir raid had been conducted in
May. The PKK base and trainiri~ camp is located in a wellwatered
valley between the Mezl aild Sive mountains which
provides an Ideal base for operations against Turkey, 20
kilometers away. The mountam ranges are used by the terrorists
travellingbetween Northern Iraq and Iran. The
sources added that operations of this type are more common
than in the past and can be mounted quickly once information
has been received about the locatIan of terrorist bases.
The camp in the Mezi region was used by the terrorists as a
rendezvous point where they gathered before launching
their attacks on Turkey. In other operations in the ~Irnak,
Hakkari and Bingöl areas 20 terrorists were killed, accordin~
