nach Salaheddin verlegt. Damals zog auch der

achtzigjährige Parteivorsitzende, Scheich Osman,
von Halabja nach Salaheddin um. Talabani, der
Parteiführer der PUK, war der Meinung, die
IBIK sei ein Instrument in den Händen der Ira- .
ner und stelle daher eine grosse Gefahr fl1r die
kurdische Region dar. Iranische Truppen beschiessen
das Grenzgebiet seit einem Jahr in
regelmllssigen Abständen. Anfilnglich wurden
diese Angriffe damit begründet. dass sich das
Hauptquartier von iranischen Oppositionellen in
dieser Region befinde. Indirekt leisteten sie damit
der IBIK Schützenhilfe. Der PUK-Führung war
deshalb jedes Mittel gegen die IBIK recht. Barzani
war diesbezüglich gemässigter.

Arabian diplomat has told
The Sunday Times of London
that his country helped pay for
Saddam Hussein's nuclear program
in Iraq as part of a secret
20-year campaign by Riyadh to
acquire its own nuclear weapons.
The newspaper carried a
lengthy report under a frontpage
banner headline: "Britain's
Gulf Wsr Ally Htltped
Saddam Build Nuclear Bomb."
A spokesman for the Saudi
Arabian Embassy in London
said he could not comment on
the matter, and British Foreign
Office officials said they were
not aware of the report.
The paper said Mohammed
KhilewI, second in command at
~heSaudi mission to the United
Nations in New York until he
defected in May and sought po-
litical asylum in .the United
States, had shown it some of the
13,000officiaI Saudi documents
he took with him when he left.
One of them, the paper said,
was a transcript of a secret desert
meeting he attended between
Saudi and Iraqi military
teams in 1989, a year before
Iraq's invasion of Kuwait,
which led to the Gulf War.
At the. meeting, the Saudi~
pledged funding for President
Saddam's nuclear program and
.banded over specialized equipment
that Iraq could obtain nowhere
else, the paper said.
The Sunday Times said the
documents showed the Saudi
rulers had given Mr. Saddam up
to $5 billion for the nuclear program.
In return, the Iraqis were
to share the technology they acquired
with Riyadh.

20 personnes tuées dans des combats inter-kurdes dans le Kurdistan
irakien
ERBIL (Irak), 25 juil (AFP) - Vingt personnes ont été tuées et plusieurs
blessées dans des affrontements qui ont opposé la semaine dernière les deux
principales formations kurdes dans le nord de l'Irak, a indiqué lundi le
"ministre de l'Intérieur" kurde, Yunis Roshbeanyi.
Seize personnes ont été tuées le 19 juillet lorsque des membres du Parti
démocratique du Kurdistan (POK de Massoud Barzani) et de l'Union patriotique
du Kurdistan (UPK de Jalal Talabani) se sont affrontés dans le village de
Beharka, près de la ville d'Erbil, dans le centre du Kurdistan, selon lui.
Quatre autres personnes ont été tuées à Erbil même, lorsqu'une dispute
sur l'eau a pris une tournure politique, a-t-il ajouté.
Des affrontements sporadiques ont également été signalés à Qalat Oiz~, un
village proche de la frontière iranienne, mais les deux formations n'ont pas
fait état de victime.
Le POK et l'UPK se sont rejettés la responsabilité des combats.
Le POR et l'UPK ont annoncé samedi à Paris être parvenus à un accord pour
mettre un terme à leurs affrontements, prévoyant notamment de nouvelles
élections législatives pour mai 1995, et la réorganisation de l'armée kurde.
