"However, it appears beyorid doubt that the
decision reflects the overall sentiment of the
CSCE parliamentarians. poly' 27,vot~s, as
opposed to 135, were against th~ sendmg of
the mission to Turkey. These were cast by the
eight-member Turkish delegation, some
Turkic republics and three unknown countries.
The Council of Europe's parliamentary
assembly has also declared that it would send
a mission to Turkey and reassess the situation
in light of the mission's report., However,
Ankara, aware of the option thatthe council
could freezeTurkey's membership - a point
lobbied for fervently by the now defunct pro-
. Kurdish Democracy Party (DEP) deputies
who are currently in Brussels -felt relieved
. that this was not done. ,
In the wake of the two deCisions, there was
a1sospeculation that the EuropeanParliament,
, was conside~ng. freez!ng its links.w!th Tur~ey
by not estabhshmg a Jomt .COmmISSIOn dunng
its new term,which begins July 19. .
