BAGHDAD- The Iraqi authorities
have ordered all bars, nightclubs and
discotheques to close in 15 days time,
newspapers reported on Friday.
A decree by the ruling Revolution
Command Council (RCC), carried by
the newspaper, withdrew licenses of
bars and restaurant owners selling alcohol
and ordered discos, cabarets and
nightclubs to close by the deadline.
"The RCC has decided to close
cabarets, discos and nightclubs and
withdraw licences of shops where all
kinds of alcoholic drinks are offered
for," the state-owned newspapers said.
"Drinking and selling of all kinds of
alcohol shaH be forbidden
in ... c1ubs ... restaurants and
hotels ... ,"they said quoting the RCC
decree.
The RCC gave owners of bars,
restaurants, hotels and clubs 15 days to
clear their stocks of alcohol. Violators
would be sentenced to prison tenns of
up to one year. .
Offenders will face prison tenns of at
least three years for a repeat offense and
risk confiscation of the contents of their
shops.
The decree is the latest in a series of
measures taken by President Saddam
Hussein since he took personal charge
should be encouraged.
He said they had talked to Demirel about the
arrest of the de~uties, the situation which emerged
with the DEP s closure and the fact that the
deputies had not yet faced any charges in court, all
problematic issues.
Sever ( said they had also told the president
that they were ready to do whatever was necessary
to Improve the prospects for peace in the country.
. I . h h
He quoted De mIre as saymg t at e, too was
against some articles in the Constitution and that
consensus was necessary for the alteration of those
articles.
In an earlier statement Sever and his two colleagues
said that they had some demands such as
the change of the law introduced after the
September 12, 1980 coup and the establishment of
social tranquility.
He said they had announced that they would
resign if their demands were not met.
Sever added that they would meet with other
organizations and would decide on the resignation
after these meetings.
of the Cabinet early' last month to combat
what the ruling Baath party newspaper
al- Th a v.'ra described as deviant
behavior." Though the measure does
not amount to a blanket ban on alcohol,
the official press welcomed the decision
and said it was in line with our "Arab
and Islamic values."
Iraqis can still drink at home and get
alcohol from shops licensed to sell
liqueur.
But it is the first time that Iraq has
imposed a total ban on drinking alcohol
in public.
The nightlife of Baghdad, where the
Arabian Nights was set, was famous
throughout the Middle East. The new
measure reflects top level discontent
with what is viewed as licentious
behavior in a country where stringent
U.N. trade sanctions imposed after
Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 have
meant that many Iraqis live below the
poverty line.
The government also hopes the ban
will allay public anger at the sight of
rich Iraqis openly consuming bottles of
whisky and wine at a time the poor
have to struggle for a daily meal.
Alcohol is not yet included in the government's
growing list of banned foreign
goods.
