Minister in charge of human rights,
Mehmet Kahraman, resigned on
Saturday from his government post
. and the -Social Democrat Peoples'
. Party (SHP) in protest of efforts to .
prevent the creation of a Human
Rights Ministry. Kahraman said
Saturday that he shown patience in
trying to create the orgaruzation of a
human rights ministry as planned by
the True Path Party (DYP)-SHP
coalition.
"Until today I had hope," he said,
adding that the reason for his resig- .
nation was "the negative attitude the DYP group has t~en
on the issue of passing the law with regard to ilie foundmg
of a human rights ministry."Kahraman sai~.in his resignation
that he believed that under these conditions, there was
no value in him attempting to stay ~n as a minist~r and t~at .
it had become impossible to estabhsh a human nghts mmistry.
Kahraman also sent a letter to the SHP, announcing his
resignation from his position as deputy secretary general of
the party. . .

PKK attacks idil town before
President Demirel's visit

DIYARBAKIR- Militants of the
'Outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party
(PKK) staged a night-long attack on
the Idiltown of ~Irnak on Fdday
prior to President Süleyman
Demirel's scheduled visit to the city .
center on Saturday.
Witnesses said over 100 militants
armed with rocket launchers and
machine guns opened fire on govem- .
ment buildings m the town at around
10 pm Friday night. A clash with
local security forces continued until
Saturday morning when officials
declared a full cerfew and banned all
entrance and exist from the town.
Sources said security forces regained
controlover the settlement m the
early hours of the momina.
Initial reports had it t~at at least .
six policemen were killed in the
fighting while 15 others were.
wounded.
Many houses and shops were
reportedly damaged.Local officials
had prevIOusly announced a major
success in the anti-terrorist operation
on Mt.Gabar which has been continuing
for two months. They had said
the 1>KK was completely crushed on
the mountain.

Vislte d'un émissaire de M. Barzani à Téhéran
TEHERAN, 28 juin (AFP) - Une délégation du parti démocratique du
Kurdistan (PDK, de Massoud Barzani) d'Irak se trouve à Téhéran pour des
entretiens "sur une médiation de l'Iran en vue de mettre fin aux hostilités
au Kurdistan irakien", a indiqué mardi l'agence officielle IRNA.
Cette délégation, dirigée par M. Nichridan Barzani, doit avoir des
entretiens avec des responsables iraniens sur "les moyens de mettre fin aux
différends entre le PDK et l'Union patriotique du Kurdistan" (UPK, de Jalal
Talabani), selon IRNA.
MM. Barzani et Talabani s'étaient rencontrés lundi à Erbil, dans le nord
de l'Irak sous contrôle kurde, pour examiner les moyens de consolider la
trêve entre leurs formations respectives, selon un communiqué du Congrès
national irakien (CNI), coalition d'opposants au régime de Bagdad.
Les combats entre ces deux formations dans les régions qui échappent à
l'autorité de Bagdad depuis l'insurrection kurde qui avait suivi la guerre
du Golfe (janvier-février 1991), ont fait plus d'une centaine de morts
depuis le mois de mai dernier, selon des sources indépendantes dans le
Kurdistan irakien.
Selon le CNI, ces combats auxquels des Kurdes pro-iraniens avaient
également participé sporadiquement, ont fait six cents morts.
Le quotidien iranien Kayhan avait affirmé, fin mai, que l'UPK et le PDK
avaient demandé aux dirigeants iraniens d'entreprendre une médiation pour
mettre fin aux sanglants affrontements les mettant aux prises, ce que ces
deux formations avaient démenti.
