REVUE DE PRESSE~PRESS REVIEW.BERHEVOKA ÇAPÊ.RwISTA STAMPA~DENTRO DE LA PRENSA~BASIN ÖZETi Turkey urges Amnesty International to 'see true face of PKK' Turkish Daily News ANKARA- Angered by an Amnesty International report that urges Washington to "rethink" aid to Turkey, Ankara called on the organization "to see the true face of the (outlawed) Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) terrorism." In an unusually severe statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ferhat Ataman said on Wednesday that "he was unable to understand Amnesty International's attitude" which "wanted to create a completely false image ofTurkey." Ankara' s unease is understood to be due to the timing of the report which came out while the U.S. Congress debates military assistance to Ankara with a pronounced tendency in both houses to link the aid to human rights and the Cyprus question. Last week, the Senate' s Appropriations Committee recommended continuatIOn of aid to Turkey, on the "assumption that it was not used for domestic security." Unlike the Congress. the committee did not link one quarter of the aid to the "human rights and Cyprus issues." The Senate subcommittee's report, if adopted by the General Assembly~.marks a difference of Wording between the two houses. In such a case, a conference committee, formed by representatives of both houses, will come together to prepare a joint draft. If they cannot agree on one, then last year's draft would be accepted - a solution not at all unfavorable to Turkey. Lawyers urge Council of Europe to suspend Turkey Reuters STRASBOURG, France- Fourteen European lawyers, including two former French ministers, appealed to the European Commission on Human Rights on Wednesday to protect six Kurdish members of Parliament imprisoned in Turkey. The group, including former Socialist foreign minister Roland Dumas, also urged the 32-nation Council of Europe, the commission's parent organization, to suspend Turkey' s membership, until it changed "policy toward the Kurdish people. ' The Kurdish members of Parliament have been detained on treason charges that carry a maximum death penalty since last March, when the Turkish National Assembly lifted their immunity, a decision upheld by the country's Constitutional Court. The lawyers claimed their detention violated four articles Turkish Daily News ANKARA- Lawyers for the banned Kurdish based Democracy Party (DEP) have announced that they will file a complaint against Nusret Denural, chief prosecutor of Ankara State Security Court with the high commission of judges and prosecutors. According to the lawyers the chief prosecutor leaked the DEP indictment to the press before sending it to the constitutional court. In a statement to the Anatolia news agency, the DEP lawyers Mehmet Cengiz, Aydin Erdogan and Dursun Errni~ said, "It is Mr. Demlfal's fault that the Indictment was of the European Convention on Human Rights, protecting members of Parliament from politically-motivated arrest and imprisonment, upholding freedom of speech and barring discrimination on grounds of race or language. The Commission must first decide whether the complaint is admissible before it can be heard by the European Court of Human Rights. Dumas told reporters the Council of Europe's parliamentary assembly, which passed a resolution on April13 calling for the deputies' release, would examine a motioncalling for Turkey's suspension next Monday.
