Il y eut également l’intervention du général Galtieri et de la junte, ces derniers connaissaient la
situation critique de leurs troupes. Ils donnèrent en conséquence au gouverneur Menéndez un
blanc seing presque total pour négocier avec les Britanniques.
L’accord de reddition signé le 14 juin 1982 et remis au général Moore par Mario Benjamin
Menéndez contient les stipulations suivantes :
Argentinian Surrender I, the undersigned, commander of all the
Argentine land, sea and air forces in the Falkland Islands, M.B.M. (Mario
Benjamin Menendez), surrender to Major General J.J. (John Jeremy)
Moore CB, OBE, MC, as representative of Her Britannic Majesty's
Government.
Under the terms of this surrender, all Argentine personnel in the Falkland
Islands are to muster at assembly points which will be nominated by
General Moore, and hand over their arms, ammunition, and all other
weapons and war-like equipment as directed by General Moore, or
appropriate British officers acting on his behalf.
Following the surrender, all personnel of the Argentine forces will be
treated with honour in accordance with the conditions set out in the
Geneva Convention of 1949.
They will obey any directions concerning movement, and in connection
with accommodation.
This surrender is to be effective from 23.59 hours (7:59 EDT, 8:59 P.M.
Falkland time) and includes those Argentine forces presently deployed in
and around Port Stanley, those others on East Falkland, West Falkland,
and all outlying Islands 9 .
Nous pouvons constater que les conditions de la reddition n’offrent aucune contrepartie à
l’Argentine, l’armée argentine se rend, c’est la fin de la guerre… Les soldats argentins se sont
battus pendant 73 jours pour rien.
A titre anecdotique, la salle du gouvernement des Falkland où l’accord de reddition fut signé par
le Général Mario Menéndez est appelée depuis ce jour la salle de la Libération ou « Liberation
Room ».
