Joseph Amiot ferme la liste des missionnaires français de la Compagnie de Jésus qui se sont illustrés en Chine par l’étendue de leurs connaissances p.432 et par leurs travaux scientifiques, littéraires et artistiques. Dans sa vie de missionnaire, on constate deux époques très distinctes. La première, celle de son apostolat et de l’étude des langues parlées dans le vaste empire chinois, s’étend de 1750 à 1766. La seconde, la plus importante et la plus longue, celle où il conquiert la réputation méritée de savant, par sa correspondance scientifique et littéraire avec les personnages les plus érudits de son temps, embrasse les années écoulées entre 1766 et 1793. Son nom était connu de l’Europe savante, il avait pénétré jusqu’au fond des deux Amériques. On se rappelle l’ambassade extraordinaire de lord Macartney à Pékin en 1793 et 1794. Cet ambassadeur aurait bien voulu faire la connaissance du missionnaire et l’entretenir. Celui-ci, malade, très affaibli, ne put se transporter chez lui, mais il lui écrivit une lettre de regrets et aussi de vœux ardents pour le succès de sa mission auprès de l’empereur. Ce fut le dernier acte de sa vie. Lord Macartney avait amené avec lui comme secrétaire Staunton, qui publia, deux ans plus tard, le récit authentique de l’ambassade et n’oublia pas dans son ouvrage M. Langlès, savant académicien français, le traduisit en 1805, et dédia l’ouvrage au célèbre jésuite. La dédicace est conçue en ces termes : « Hommage de vénération, de regrets et de reconnaissance offert à la mémoire du révérend père Amiot, missionnaire apostolique à Pékin, correspondant de l’académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, savant infatigable, profondément versé dans l’histoire des sciences, des arts et la langue des Chinois, ardent promoteur de la langue et de la littérature tartare-mandchoux. » Avec M.
