71 La "flanelle" était communément utilisée mais la "serge" avait fait son
apparition dès les années 1820. On ne sait pas exactement s'il s'agit là d'un

changement de tissu ou non; la flanelle et la serge étaient toutes deux des tissus
laineux, et les termes semblaient parfois être interchangeables.
Bien que la gargousse de l'obusier de 12 livres fût faite d'une seule pièce de
serge, ses côtés étaient taillés un peu en biais de manière à ce qu'une fois
cousus, ils permettent d'obtenir la forme conique requise.
73 Comme la gargousse de 5 livres, pour le canon de 8 pouces, était plus courte
que la chambre, un tampon de poussier de charbon (sac de serge bleue rempli de
poussier) était enfoncé dans la gargousse par-dessus la charge de poudre afin de
