L’adhésion au PC participe du mouvement général vers une politi<strong>sa</strong>tion parti<strong>sa</strong>ne. Il n’est pas pour autant une simple apllication d’un modèle universel d’affiliation. Pour quelle raison adhère-t-on au PCF ? Que signifie donc cet acte, en apparence simple, par lequel un individu déclare qu’il appartient désormais à une communauté parti<strong>sa</strong>ne, explicitement référée à une idéologie, une éthique, voire à une conception du monde ? Pas d’explication unique : l’adhésion est socialement déterminée et elle relève, tout à la fois, d’un choix politique rationnel et d’une impulsion affective. 1. Adhésion, adhésions… L’adhésion, tout d’abord, se décline au pluriel. Adhérer au PCF dans un « bastion », où les communistes dirigent la mairie et contrôlent les associations, ne relève pas de la même intensité que celle qui pousse à « prendre <strong>sa</strong> <strong>carte</strong> » en Al<strong>sa</strong>ce ou en Lozère. Devenir militant clandestin en 1942 ou adhérer à la Fête de l’Humanité en 1945 ne présente ni les mêmes risques, ni la même charge affective. L’engagement des « natifs » (les communistes de lignées communistes) n’a pas la même signification que celui des « convertis » 66 . En fait, le processus qui conduit à rejoindre « le Parti » est assez diversifié pour que Georges Lavau 67 ait pu naguère distinguer au moins cinq classes d’adhésion. Les adhésions d’émotion, expliquait le politologue, sont celles que l’on recueille dans un meeting, une fête ou une campagne électorale ; les adhésions-régulari<strong>sa</strong>tions, plus nombreuses, parachèvent un compagnonnage plus ou moins long, par le biais notamment des syndicats ou des organi<strong>sa</strong>tions de masse ; les adhésions- rectifications, après une tentative ailleurs, poussent l’individu vers une organi<strong>sa</strong>tion plus structurée, plus active ou plus cohérente ; les adhésions d’imprégnation sont plus naturelles, par le prisme des communautés existantes, de famille, de voisinage ou de quartier. Enfin, il plaçait à part les adhésions d’intellectuels, elles-mêmes différentes selon les époques et les milieux concernés. De son côté, Annie Kriegel 68 distinguait en 1968 les adhésions « politiques » (une manifestation concentrée de la conviction politique), les adhésions existentielles (l’insertion volontaire dans une contre-société) et les adhésions idéologiques, propres notamment aux intellectuels. Les trajectoires qui conduisent au communisme se déclinent à l’infini. À la limite, on trouve l’irréductibilité de chaque parcours biographique : le cheminement de l’intellectuel ancien combattant Paul Vaillant-Couturier n’est pas le même que celui de l’anarcho-syndicaliste Benoît Frachon ou que celui du jeune juif révolutionnaire venu de Pologne, Michel Feintuch, qui prendra le nom de Jean Jérôme. Nul n’adhère – et ne quitte le parti – pour les mêmes raisons… Données nouvelles sur les effectifs du PCF 2. L’adhésion : un fait social. Acte individuel par fondation, l’adhésion parti<strong>sa</strong>ne s’inscrit dans un milieu et dans un contexte. Le milieu fournit des structures d’action et des représentations, qui constituent autant de matériaux, de supports externes de personnalité réorganisés dans des biographies singulières. En cela, l’adhésion renvoie à des histoires où la détermination individuelle s’articule à la vie des groupes. 2.1. La marque ouvrière. Le PCF s’est voulu fièrement le « parti de la classe ouvrière ». L’expression a souvent été contestée, soit en soulignant que de nombreuses régions ouvrières ne présentent pas de propension particulière au vote communiste ou à l’adhésion au PC (la Franche-Comté par exemple), soit en mettant en valeur le fait que le ratio adhérents/électeurs a été souvent plus élevé dans des départements de ruralité encore marquée : Corse, Creuse, Dordogne, Gers ou Hautes-Alpes (<strong>carte</strong>s 8, 9 et 10). Il n’en reste pas moins que les gros bataillons communistes sont dans les zones très urbaines et très ouvrières : Seine-Maritime, Nord et Pas-de-Calais, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Isère, Var et Bouches-du-Rhône. À quoi s’ajoute bien sûr la couronne parisienne qui manifeste avec éclat ce que l’on <strong>sa</strong>it depuis longtemps : la périphérie urbaine, populaire et ouvrière, est une terre de prédilection du communisme français. La part de la Région parisienne n’a <strong>sa</strong>ns doute pas retrouvé, après 1944, son importance d’avant-guerre ; néanmoins, elle rassemble toujours entre un cinquième et un tiers des effectifs du parti (graphique 2). Au total, du point de vue du militant, comme de l’électeur, le fait communiste est largement urbain, masculin et ouvrier. C’est, <strong>sa</strong>ns nul doute, la source de son originalité : en valori<strong>sa</strong>nt le monde industriel et en promouvant une élite ouvrière en son sein et dans les institutions publiques (de la commune à l’État), le PC a constitué « une entreprise de subversion des règles du jeu politique » 69 . 2.2. Des « matrices » sociales d’adhésion. Cette imbrication du communisme militant et de l’habitus ouvrier ne relève ni du ha<strong>sa</strong>rd ni de la pure nécessité. Fai<strong>sa</strong>nt œuvre d’historien, le sociologue Jean-Paul Molinari a mis en évidence, il y a quelques années, un certain nombre de stéréotypes, modèles de cheminement qu’il a désignés comme les « matrices d’adhésion » au communisme 70 . La probabilité de l’adhésion, montrait-il, varie « selon que l’ouvrier se trouve intégré dans des matrices communautaires ou, qu’à l’inverse, il s’en trouve séparé peu ou prou ». Le PCF active ces liens communautaires par des mobili<strong>sa</strong>tions volontaires (la fête, le meeting, l’assemblée locale, les appels à la lutte, les campagnes de recrutement) qui stimulent la sociabilité prolétarienne autour du 66 La formule est empruntée à Catherine Leclercq, Histoires d’« ex ».
