Like the Full Score Comprehensive Edition,
Vol. IIa his vocal score contains four versions
and two intermediate versions of the work,
beginning with Bizet’s definitive first version
with dialogues up to the recitative version by
Ernest Giraud.
the letters allocated to it and the cut marks
indicated.
The Sequence table (p. XXIV - XXXV) illustrates
the sequence of all versions and at the
vi= =de.
Autorenschaft aller an „Carmen“ vorgenommenen Änderungen.
Band IIa vier Fassungen (A, B, C, d) und zwei Zwischenfassungen
gekennzeichnet (Details siehe Legende 1, S. XXII).
Sprungzeichen:
geben an, welche Fassung jeweils springt.
Preface
The critical new edition of “Carmen”:
The critical new edition of “Carmen” includes all versions of the
work, from Bizet’s first fair copy of 1874 to the first published edition
of the score in 1877. During the course of many years’ painstaking
research, new discoveries have been made relating to the timing,
occasion and authorship of all the alterations made to “Carmen”.
These discoveries, coupled with a substantial body of primary
and secondary literature and the results of revised analyses of
the handwriting, have led to new insights concerning Bizet’s true
intentions.
On the basis of the new results of research, all alterations have
been brought together to form five versions and four preliminary and
intermediate versions. All surviving passages have been published,
and it has been possible to reconstruct a few missing parts. For the
first time, the partially missing first version of No. 26 – Duo final has
been reconstructed.
The brief description of the versions on p. IX gives an overview
of the definition, sources, publication and performability of each
individual version.
This vocal score
Supplementary edition to the Full Score – Comprehensive Edition, Vol. IIa
This vocal score contains four versions (A, B, C, d) and two intermediate
versions (A -1 , B -1 ) of “Carmen”, matching the full score Vol. IIa.
On pages XIX - XXI a summary description of the versions is
reproduced.
How to use the edition:
The versions published here are, as far as possible, published within
the same sequence. Differences have been printed in cue-sized notes
or set on small staves, with version letters placed before them (for
details, see Legende 1, p. XXII).
Cut marks:
With a different sequence of versions, differing sections are printed
one after the other and separated by cut marks. The version letters
placed before the markings vi= and =de indicate which version
needs to cut, and where to. If the corresponding end of the cut (=de)
is not on the same double page spread of the score, a number in
brackets gives the page in the score where the end of the cut will be
found.
Cut numbers:
All cut marks are also numbered consecutively at the bottom of the
page of the full score or vocal score.
To facilitate orientation in the orchestral parts, only the
consecutive cut numbers are shown, and not the cut marks or the
vi= =de markings. The same cut numbers can also be found in the
sequence table. (p. XXIV - XXXV).
The sequence of the individual versions is separated by cut marks.
This vocal score can only be used after making a special
The sequence table:
The sequence table gives a graphic diagram of all versions of
“Carmen”. The cut numbers contained in this also serve to indicate
how to arrange the performance material.
The Legends:
Legend 1: Version letters and special symbols
The function and significance of the version letters and
special symbols found in the score are described here in
detail.
Legend 2: Use of the sequence table
Arranging the sequence of the work:
Arranging the sequence of the work in the full score, vocal score
and orchestral parts is achieved by consulting the sequence table.
By using the cut numbers printed in all the materials, the sections
which are not needed can be cut without any problems.
The Critical Reports:
Analyses of the history of the composition of the work and its
reception, a comprehensive verbal and graphic description of the
versions, a report on the sources, critical commentaries including
readings, the libretto and numerous tables of musical variants and
facsimiles are included in the critical edition as Vol. I – Critical
Reports.
Further supplementary editions to the the critical new edition:
Vocal Score to the Full Score – Selected Edition 1, Vol. IIb
Matching the Full Score Vol. IIb, this vocal score contains exclusively
Bizet’s definitive first version with dialogues as an excerpt from the
Full Score – Comprehensive Edition, Vol. IIa. It is notated without
cut marks and a separate arrangement of the sequence of the work
is not required.
Vocal Score to the Full Score – Selected Edition 2, Vol. IIc
Matching the Full Score Vol. IIc, this vocal score contains the bestknown
versions of Carmen until now, published as an excerpt from
the Full Score – Comprehensive Edition, Vol. IIa: the version of the
first performance with dialogues, together with the corrected version
of the first performance, and the version with recitatives based on
this. The differences between the versions are shown as in this vocal
score with cut marks and cut numbers. The paragraphs “How to use
the edition” also apply correspondingly to the vocal score to Selected
Edition 2, Vol. IIc.
1. Description générale des versions
d’’édition au Vol. I, Chapitre VI – Appendice (supplementum 3).
– No 26 – Duo final: La version préliminaire A-1 manque en partie
Remaniements
– No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: troisième version définitive; intégrée
à son tour dans le No 1 – Introduction.
– No 5 – Scène: Nouvelle composition du postlude orchestral en
l’adaptant au No 4 – Havanaise, nouvellement composé.
intentions de Bizet (cf. Vol. I, Chapitre I.7.b. et I.7.c.).
Version d +1
Remaniements
– No 8 – Récitatif et chanson:
Échange des mesures 71 – 94 contre 95 – 118
Coupure des mesures 139 – 142
– Récitatif avant No 19 – Trio: coupure des mesures 28 – 31.
Publication
– No 22 – Duo: coupure des mesures 93 – 171
– No 24 – Chœur: Échange / coupure: mesures 111 – 125 sont
1. Allgemeine Beschreibung der Fassungen
1.a. Die Fassungen:
Von der Oper Carmen entstanden drei Fassungen zu Bizets Lebzeiten
(A, B, C), zwei weitere nach seinem Tod (d, e).
1.f. Geschützte Fassung:
No 4 – Air et chœur (die Fassung A von Carmens Auftrittsarie)
Appendix abgedruckt (supplementum 3).
Neuausgabe.
Vorfassung A -1
Erste Niederschrift - Sommer 1874
fassung A umgearbeitet wurden – Sommer 1874.
Quellenproblematik
– N o 10 – Final: Vorfassung A -1 fehlt teilweise in den Quellen.
– N o 26 – Duo final: Vorfassung A -1 fehlt teilweise in den Quellen.
Fassung A
dens in Band I, Kapitel VI. – Appendix abgedruckt (supplementum 3)
– N o 5 – Scène: Die thematisch mit N o 4 – Air et chœur in Verbindung
stehende Fassung A der N o 5 – Scène ist in Band I, Kapitel VI. –
Appendix publiziert (supplementum 4).
– N o 15 – Chanson: Die erhaltenen Fragmente sind in Band I, Kapitel
Zwischenfassung B -3
Neukomposition
No 1bis – Scène et pantomime:
eingeschoben.
Quellenproblematik
Zwischenfassung B-3 ist nur in fragmentarischer Instrumentation
erhalten.
Publikation
No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: Die erhaltenen Fragmente sind in
Quellenproblematik
– No 10 – Final: Zwischenfassung B-1 fehlt teilweise in den Quellen.
Umarbeitungen
– No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: dritte und endgültige Version;
wiederum intergiert in die No 1 – Introduction.
– No 5 – Scène: Neukomposition des Orchesternachspieles mit
Anpassung an die neu komponierte No 4 – Havanaise
– Details wurden verändert in: No 3, 10 und 23.
Publikation
B-1 .
Definition
Als Fassung B wurden – mit Ausnahme der Metronomangaben – nur
jene Eintragungen klassifizert, die in mindestens zwei Quellen aufscheinen
(also z.
Neukomposition
– No 4: Neukomposition als No 4 – Havanaise
zur neukomponierten No 4 – Havanaise
– No 13bis – Chœur: Strich des Chores T. 1 - 13, Transposition von E-Dur
nach F-Dur und Umbenennung in No 13bis – Sortie d’ Escamillo
– No 15 – Chanson: Umarbeitung zur a cappella-Version.
– Details wurden verändert in: No 1, 1bis , 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16,
17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25 und 26.
Publikation
Umarbeitungen
– „Opéra-comique en 4 actes“: Umbenennung von Acte III, Ier / IId Tableau in Acte III / Acte IV
– No 10 – Final: Strich der in Fassung A eingefügten 16 Takte Einleitung
– No 13bis – Sortie d’ Escamillo: Rücktransposition wieder nach E-Dur
– No 16 – Duo: Ergänzung von zwei Takten Einleitung
– Umbenennung von „Le lieutenant“ in „Zuniga“; in No 24 übernimmt
„Zuniga“ den Part des „Andrès“
– Details wurden verändert in: No 1, 1bis , 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16,
der Metronomangaben (siehe Bd. 1, Kapitel IV.a.) widerspricht
Rezitative
– Ballett: Zwischen No 24 und No 25 fügt Guiraud ein dreiteiliges
(vergl. Band I, Kapitel I.a., Abschnitt 7.c.).
Publikation
In allen
besteht (vergl. Band I, Kapitel I.7.b. und I.7.c.).
Fassung d +1
Korrigierte Rezitativfassung - Sommer 1875
Umarbeitungen
– No 8 – Récitatif et chanson:
Austausch von Takt 71 - 94 gegen 95 - 118
Strich von Takt 139 - 142
– Rezitativ vor No 19 – Trio: Takt 28 - 31 werden gestrichen.
Publikation
– No 22 – Duo: Strich von 93 - 171
– No 24 – Chœur: Austausch / Kürzung: Takt 111 - 125 werden ersetzt
früheren Fassungen sind in Band I, Kapitel IV.b. – Lesarten vollständig
abgedruckt.(vergl. auch Band I, Kapitel I.7.d.)
1. General description of the versions
1.a. The versions:
Three versions of the opera Carmen were created during Bizet‘s
lifetime (A, B, C), and a further two after his death (d, e).
What constitutes a version is a state of the work which has no gaps,
is demonstrably complete in itself, and is valid for the whole “Opéracomique”.
The completeness of each of these versions results from
the fact that they can be associated with a particular point in time:
A: completion of the autograph score by Bizet and release of
individual numbers for copying – late summer 1874
B: the premiere – 3 March 1875
C: first publication of the vocal score – 18 March 1875
d: recitatives and ballet by E. Guiraud – summer 1875
e: first publication of the score – [spring] 1877
Superscript numbers following the version letters (A-1 , B-3 , B-2 , B-1 )
denote individual details or sections from intermediate versions;
these can only be related to a more extended period of time, and they
cannot be proven as complete works.
1.b. The authors of the versions:
Only Version A and the intermediate versions A-1 , B-3 and B-2 can
be exclusively attributed to Bizet himself.
B-1 , B and C are only partially by Bizet himself. They were indeed
essentially created with Bizet’s knowledge and involvement, but for
the most part against his wishes; in particular cases, perhaps even
without his knowledge.
Versions d and e were created after Bizet’s death by Ernest
Guiraud. Bizet would probably have undertaken the addition
of recitatives himself, whilst the ballet from Version d and the
alterations in Version e are diametrically opposed to his intentions.
1.c. Presentation of the versions:
– differences in the sequence of the work are printed in consecutive
sections, which are identified with cut marks and version letters
(see Legende 2).
– differences in details are shown, as far as possible, within the same
sequence in cue-sized notes or on small staves, each indicated with
version letters. Important differences which cannot be presented
within the same sequence are printed in consecutive sections which
are identified with cut marks and version letters (see Legende 2).
– the version names of the music numbers and the continuous
indications of the score pages reproduce the sequence of the
versions; differences in details are not identified within these.
1.d. Completeness of the versions:
Only from the premiere version B onwards do all sources survive.
It has been possible to reconstruct the missing sections of the
preliminary and intermediate versions A-1 and B-1 from the preceding
versions.
1.e Publication of the versions in the present edition:
A-1 : the surviving and reconstructed sections are published in the
score.
A: the surviving sections are published in the score; exceptions
to this are No 4 and parts of No 5, which are published in Vol. I,
e: the version is published complete in Vol. I, Chapter IV.b. –
Readings.
1.f. Protected copyright version:
No 4 – Air et chœur (Version A of Carmen’s entrance aria) was
published in 2002 following the discovery of the autograph score
by the publisher Choudens, and is therefore protected in some
EU countries as an “Editio Princeps” [first edition]. Excerpts
from this aria have been included in Vol. I, Chapter VI. – Appendix
(supplement 3) by kind permission of the publisher.
1.g. Arrangement of the performance material:
The performance material for the “Comprehensive Edition” and
“Selected Edition 2” has to be arranged because of the required cuts
which determine the sequence of the version. This selection can
be made with the help of the matching cut numbers printed in the
score, vocal score and orchestral parts. An explanation of these can
be found in the sequence table on pp. XXIV - XXXV.
The performance material for the “Selected Edition 1” contains
no cuts and therefore does not require any arrangement of the
sequence of material.
2. The versions in chronological sequence
In the paragraph Problems of Sources, the particular characteristics
of the sources for that version are mentioned. Essential Reworkings
in comparison with the relevant preceding version are listed. The
paragraph Publication describes the type (complete, incomplete,
reconstructed, etc.) and place (full score, Critical Commentary) of
the publication in the Critical New Edition.
Preliminary version A-1 First fair copy – summer 1874
Sections and details in Bizet’s first fair copy of the work, which were
reworked into the definitive First Version A on Bizet’s own initiative
before the beginning of rehearsals for the premiere, and before the
copying of other sources – summer 1874.
Problems of Sources
– No 10 – Final: preliminary version A-1 is partially missing in the
sources.
It has been possible to reconstruct the missing sections in full by
referring to corresponding and analogous places.
– No 26 – Duo final: preliminary version A-1 is partially missing in the
sources.
Bizet had placed a reference to Carmen’s aria from No 19 between
bars 202 and 213, of which only 4 bars survive; the other bars have
been reconstructed by the editor for the first time in the history of
the publication of “Carmen”.
XX
Publication
Description of the versions
– Preliminary version A -1 is published in full, together with the
reconstructions, in the present score.
Version A
Definitive first version – late summer 1874
Including those alterations, cuts, insertions, etc., which Bizet made
on his own initiative before the beginning of rehearsals for the
premiere in October 1874, and before the copying of other sources.
Including those corrections, with which he improved mistakes,
inconsistencies and ideas which were not fully worked out, in
the course of the making the fair copy (see Vol. I, Chapter IV.b. –
Readings: →obsoletus).
Problems of Sources
– No 4 – Air et chœur: Version A of Carmen’s aria No . 4 was published
by Choudens and is protected by copyright as an “Editio princeps”
[first edition].
– No 15 – Chanson: Version A only survives in a fragmentary
instrumentation.
Reworkings of A-1 to A
– No 9 – Chanson: addition of 8 bars introduction
– No 26 – Duo final: cut of the Carmen reference from No 19
– The sequence was altered in: No 2, 5, 6, 9, 16, 17 and 23.
– Details were altered in: No 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 16, 19, 23, 25 and 26.
Publication
– With the exception of No 4, 5 and 15, Version A is published complete
in the present score.
– No 4 – Air et chœur is not published in the present edition.
Excerpts are included in Vol. I, Chapter VI. – Appendix (suppl. 3) by
kind permission of the publisher Choudens.
– No 5 – Scène: Version A of No 5 – Scène, which is thematically linked
with No 4 – Air et chœur, is published in Vol. I, Chapter VI. – Appendix
(supplement 4).
– No 15 – Chanson: the surviving fragments are published in Vol. I,
Chapter VI. – Appendix (supplement 5)
Intermediate version B-3 New composition
No 1bis – Scène et pantomime:
This number, which was not contained in Version A, was composed
at the beginning of the rehearsal period of October–November 1874 –
probably at the request of the baritone Duvernoy – and inserted in
No 1 – Introduction.
November 1874; this time as an independent number following on
from No 1 – Introduction.
Reworkings of A to B-2 – No 5 – Scène: new composition of the central part with adjustment
to the newly-composed No 4 – Havanaise; inconsistently, the
orchestral epilogue remained unaltered.
– No 10 – Final: addition of 16 bars introduction; replacement of the
final 95 bars by just 37 bars, in which Bizet included a reference
from the newly-composed No 4 – Havanaise.
Publication
– No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: the surviving fragments are published
in Vol. I, Chapter VI. – Appendix (supplement 2)
– No 5 - Scène: the sections relating to No 4 – Air et chœur are
published in Vol. I, Chapter VI. – Appendix (supplement 4)
– No 10 – Final: intermediate version B-2 is published complete in the
Intermediate version B-1 Alterations, cuts, insertions, etc., which were made during rehearsals
for the premiere between October 1874 and March 1875, but were
reworked again to form Version B before the premiere.
Problems of Sources
– No 10 – Final: intermediate version B-1 is partially missing in the
sources, but it has been possible to reconstruct the missing sections
in full by referring to corresponding and analogous places.
Reworkings
– No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: third and final version; in turn
integrated into No 1 – Introduction.
– No 5 – Scène: new composition of the orchestral epilogue with
adjustment to the newly-composed No 4 – Havanaise
– The sequence was altered in: No 5, 7, 10, 12 and 23.
– Details were altered in: No 3, 10 and 23.
Publication
Intermediate version B-1 does not survive in full in the sources, but
it has been possible to reconstruct it by referring to corresponding
places, and it is therefore published complete in the present score.
Version B
Version of the first performance – March 1875
Alterations, cuts, insertions, etc., which were made during rehearsals
for the premiere between October 1874 and March 1875, including
the further reworkings from intermediate version B-1 .
Definition
Only those markings which appear in at least two sources (for
example, in the score and the parts for the premiere) have been
classified as Version B (with the exception of metronome markings).
Markings made by the conductor which are only found in his score,
or markings made in the parts by musicians which do not occur in
other sources, have not been adopted in the music text because they
lack authority. These markings are cited in the Readings with the
note “non adopt.” (not adopted in other sources). The Readings also
give information about whether these markings date from before or
after the premiere.
– N o 1 bis – Scène et pantomime: the last version B -1 of this number was
in turn extracted from N o 1 – Introduction in Version B, and placed
after it as a separate number.
– N o 5 – Scène: reworking of the conclusion with thematic reference
to the newly-composed N o 4 – Havanaise
– N o 13 bis – Chœur: cut of the chorus bars 1 - 13, transposition from E
major to F major and renaming as N o 13 bis – Sortie d’ Escamillo
– N o 15 – Chanson: reworking into an unaccompanied version.
– The sequence was altered in: N o 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 15, 17,
20, 23, 25 and 26.
– “Moralès” takes the part of “Andrès” in N o 12 and 13
– Details were altered in: N o 1, 1 bis , 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19,
20, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26.
Publication
Version B survives in full in the sources and is published complete
in the present score.
Version C
Corrected version of the first performance – March 1875
The version published in the first edition of the vocal score, directly
after the premiere.
Reworkings
– “Opéra-comique en 4 actes”: renaming of Acte III, Ier / IIde Tableau
as Acte III / Acte IV
– No 10 – Final: cut of the 16 bars introduction inserted into Version A
– No 13bis – Sortie d’ Escamillo: transposition back into E major
– No 16 – Duo: addition of two bars introduction
– Renaming of “Le lieutenant” as “Zuniga”; in No 24 “Zuniga” takes
over the part of “Andrès”
– Details were altered in: No 1, 1bis , 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 17,
17a, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26.
These alterations relate mainly to tempo and metronome
markings. As Bizet’s autograph vocal score, which must have served
as the model for the first edition, is missing, it is unclear to what
extent the alterations in the first edition originated from him. In
particular, the rigid approach to the metronome markings (see Vol.
I, Chapter IV.a.) certainly contradicts Bizet’s original intentions,
which are documented in his autograph score. The few surviving
pages of proofs of the vocal score show Guiraud’s handwriting, which
suggests that he played a leading role in the alterations for Version
C.
Publication
Version C survives in full in the sources and is published complete
in the present score.
Version d
Version with recitatives – summer 1875
The version with recitatives and ballet composed or arranged by
Ernest Guiraud after Bizet’s death in summer 1875. It was inserted
into Bizet’s autograph score on additional sheets by Guiraud.
Reworkings
– Version d replaces the original dialogues with the recitatives
composed by Guiraud.
– No 1bis – Scène et pantomime: is cut
– No 2, 8, 12 and 15: replacement of the melodramas and dialogues by
22 98 B 031A/B/C/d OP
Description of the versions
XXI
recitatives
– Ballet: Guiraud inserted a three-part ballet between No 24 and
No 25; the alterations in the text in No 24 are associated with this.
(see Vol. I, Chapter I.a., Section 7.c.).
Publication
– In the present score, the recitatives and the altered numbers 2, 8,
12 and 15 are published complete or marked as alternative sections
within Version C. In all other numbers which match Version C,
Version d is not separately identified in the score.
– The ballet arranged by Ernest Guiraud is not published as, unlike
the recitatives, it does not correspond with Bizet’s intentions (see
Vol. I, Chapter I.7.b. and I.7.c.).
Version d +1
Corrected version with recitatives – summer 1875
In a few places, Guiraud corrected the existing recitatives.
Reworkings
– No 8 – Récitatif et chanson:
Replacement of bars 71 - 94 with bars 95 - 118
Cut of bars 139 - 142
– Recitative before No 19 – Trio: bars 28 - 31 are cut.
Publication
In the present score, Version d +1 is published in the same way as
Version d.
Version e
Version of the first edition – [spring] 1877
Version of the first edition of the score published by Choudens.
The corresponding alterations were probably made by Ernest
Guiraud in 1877 and certainly entered by him in Bizet’s autograph
score as the model for the printer.
Reworkings
– additions to the whole of the part of Carmen as an alternative
version with soprano instead of mezzo-soprano
– Frasquita and Mercédès were switched
– No 22 – Duo: cut of bars 93 - 171
– No 24 – Chœur: replacement / cut: bars 111 - 125 were replaced by
a new final bar 111.
– the other alterations to Version e were new tempo markings and
metronome figures, alterations in the dynamics, and adjustments
to the instrumentation to make performance easier. For the
edition, the differences in Version e are of significance insofar as
they had to be differentiated from the other alterations made in
Bizet’s autograph score.
Publication
Version e is not published in the present score as, in contrast with the
recitatives in Version d, Version e does not reflect Bizet’s intentions;
all differences in comparison with the earlier versions are given
in full in Vol. I, Chapter IV.b. – Readings. (see also Vol. I, Chapter
I.7.d.)
