Sezgin to me<strong>et</strong> Saddam Hussein<br />

WASHINGTON/ANKARA- Former<br />

Interior Minister of Turkey Ism<strong>et</strong><br />

Sezgin is expected to visit Iraq in the<br />

second half of August and me<strong>et</strong> with<br />

Iraq's Presi<strong>de</strong>nt Saddam Hussein; Sezgin<br />

revealed in Washington.<br />

No <strong>de</strong>tails about the visit have been<br />

announced y<strong>et</strong>. But official sources in<br />

Washington claimed Sezgin's expected<br />

trip to Baghdad might take place on<br />

August 22 and aim to normalize relations<br />

both b<strong>et</strong>ween Turkey and Iraq and<br />

the United States and Iraq.<br />

Observers in Ankara say, the visit<br />

might be important regarding the normalization<br />

of the Turkish-Iraqi relations<br />

which have been damaged by the<br />

beginning of the Gulf crisis in August<br />

1990.<br />

Since then there have been a few po-<br />

liticians from Turkey who have visited<br />

Baghdad and m<strong>et</strong> with Hussein. These<br />

inclu<strong>de</strong> former prime minister and lea<strong>de</strong>r<br />

of the Democratic Left Party (DSP)<br />

Bülent Ecevit and <strong>de</strong>puty head of the<br />

pro-Islamist Welfare Party (RP) ~cvk<strong>et</strong><br />

Kazan.<br />

But Sezgin will be the first to visit<br />

Baghdad as a member of the ruling coalitIOn's<br />

senior partner the True Path<br />

Party (DYP).<br />

Sezgin is on a visit to the United<br />

States during which he is to me<strong>et</strong> with<br />

Congressmen. members of the Clinton<br />

admmistration and business executives<br />

.- as guest of the Washington-based International<br />

Republican <strong>Institut</strong>e.<br />

After compl<strong>et</strong>ing his contacts in the<br />

.US. Sezgin is expected to visit Taiwan<br />

from where he would r<strong>et</strong>urn to Turkey<br />

by mid-August to later visit Iraq and<br />

me<strong>et</strong> with Saddam Hussein.
